I've noticed an emerging trend on BigFooty of late; our players are no longer no good. They are however, being made to look good by the dominance of other players in the team who can never be identified.

Example -

We used to hear: "Chris Dawes is a spud and is a mega drafting blunder. I can't believe you overlooked Tippett for that hack".

Now it's: "Chris Dawes is nothing special, any young KP forward would be thriving given the silver service from your midfield".

... And at the same time -

"Dayne Beams had a better game than Stephen Hill last night, but only because he plays in one of the top clubs. Put any young midfielder in that team and he'd star".

So basically, our forwards are playing well because of our midfield, and our mids are playing well because they're in our team. So presumably our mids are only going well because of the turnovers caused by our defenders, our defenders are only going well because of the dominance of our midfield, our coaching staff are only going well because of our cattle, and our cattle are only going well because of our easy draw.

Is anyone actually going well in and of their own right? :D

You can just smell the fear around the place... I like it.

I've already apologized to Chris Dawes.
Not really talking about Pies fans with this thread, but if apologising to Dawesome helps you find peace with yourself, all the more power to you. :D

The exact same has been said about Geelong on BigFooty for four years.

People still say the same things about Geelong's players.

"Scarlett's only made to look good by the awesome midfield"

"Selwood's just lucky he gets not attention cause he's in a team of superstars"

"Bartel's nothing more than a good ordinary player made to look like a star cause of the players around him"

incredible really

People always try and make excuses for the teams doing well.

I think it's a defensive mechanism of sorts.

But yeah, some of the claims have been ridiculous. People trying to come up with reasons why we are doing so well, often contradictory ones at that.

People don't like giving the proper credit to teams, particularly if they don't like the team or the team is dominating. Though I would agree that players play better in a stronger side than they would in a weaker side. Look at west coast and Kerr, I'd say there probably would be a couple in Geelongs team as well as ours and the saints team - look how well Zac Dawson played last year. Though too many players get accused of this generally.

The things said about Geelong's forwards are true though, any decent player (Pods) will be a star in that team, Mooney and Hawkins are duds.

TRS, you identify a recently named syndrome that afflicts entities moving towards apotheosis. It's called Negative Dependant Synergy and is only perceivable to lesser entities, who exist at some distance from the superior entity.

On a perhaps related matter, HOMP is outraged at the TV and radio commentary of Friday's game. Apparently when one of our players fumbled or made a mistake, they were "disrespecting the opposition". When they executed a particularly stylish passage of play, they were "arrogant" or "getting above themselves". Yet similar plays by Geelong were described as, "unlucky" when they erred, and in orgasmic terms when they did well.

HOMP is just about ready to stomp on the worm's head - and she's a big woman.

Gotta love the complete conversion of opinion towards Thomas.

"Thomas is the worst top 10 draft pick ever, plays like a girl, never gets the hard ball, complete downhill skier. Should stick to netball"

Thomas starts getting named in peoples AA teams after 8 rounds.

"Yeah well... he still has shit hair so... yeah, what a girl..."

Spot on Sampler, and the difference between us and the commentary about Geelong is that they generally identified the superstars at Geelong, as they have several of them. Only SJ is a good forward down there though. In fact, I have this theory that you could pick some journeyman from the VFL and he would kick goals for Geelong their midfield is so good.

Whooooooosh.

Yep, happens to us, definitely happened to Geelong for a long time. Not so much these days [except perhaps a couple of their forwards].

Actually, it's the love/hate affair with MM that I find most amusing, and it's here on Bigfooty among our supporters too. Truth is, he's the best coach around - period, bar none. As for the pathetic, non-entity, overblown, under-achievers who failed so ingloriously yet again this week, just wait until we bring back the REAL losers - Presti, Lockyer, Dick, Medhurst, Brown, Fraser, Goldsack and Wellingham (eat ya hearts out knockers!) But seriously, have you ever seen such a list of players NOT playing?
