So last night saw the debut of The X-Factor, on Channel Ten.

What did everyone think?

My impressions of the show were quite positive, I have to say. Daniel McPherson is a lot less "in your face" than the Idol hosts, and will get better as the show progresses.

I like the concept of the show, too. The different groups (16-25, 25+ and vocal groups) gives the show a bit more depth compared to Idol, but whether that is just a novelty remains to be seen.

As far as the judges were concerned, they were okay. Them seem to "mesh" pretty well - Kate Cebrano seems to be very honest, John Reid (I think that's his name) appears to have a heap of experience and is quite blunt too, whilst Mark Holden is Mark Holden, he's okay.

Gotta say, also, that father & son combo did quite well, and with a bit of polish - could really be something. But a long way to go, of course.

I'll be watching tonight.

Indifferent. Wasn't great but wasn't completely crap at the same time. I'm sick of these audition episodes, they take so damn long and you actually see jack all actual auditions - good or otherwise.

I agree about Dan MacPherson as host. He's a very likable person which I think will help the show in general. The judges are OK as well.

But for the love of god, if they explain once more that the contestants are divided into three categories, I'm turning it off. But otherwise, I'll give it another go. Might leave it a few weeks until the real competition begins.

Im sorry but the people at Ten, Mark Holden and the other producers of X Factor can spin all the want about the 'wonderful differences' beetween X Factor and Idol.
Look at this way, this is the essential difference beetween Idol and X Factor. One is an attempt to create a star for the tween markets....the other is an attempt to create a Chris De Burgh, Phil Collins type MOR adult contempary star for the over 40s....simple as that really.

It's absolute nonsense. Can't believe the judges tried to convince that some of these people had the X factor. They were often orgasming over people with seriously limited talent.

Am a self-confessed Idol fanatic (sadly!) but the X Factor ironically didn't have "it". Daniel's likeable enough, but I want to repeatedly hit Kate Ceberano after she kept going on and on about "this talent is why I'm here"

Oh and it would have been nice to actually see a few auditions rather than listening to the judges prattle on about themselves.

And as BB said - there seemed to be some odd decisions about who had the X factor.

Yeah I don't think there's much different from it to Idol and I too, am sick of all these shows about people auditioning infront of three judges...we all know there are gonna be some idiots and some quality singers..also, is it JUST singing in the x-factor or dancing too?

Also...look out for a young girl called Cashmere who goes to my school, tell me what you think of her...she goes pretty far but I won't say how far!

Watched it last night... It's just Australian Idol without the naming rights.

I don't know if this has been covered before, but, I figure:

1. Ten can't afford the "Idol" name, and there won't be an Aus Idol 2005.
2. Dicko is not judging because of "My Restaurant Rules"
3. Marcia won't be judging because of her music career.

Finally... Basically X-Factor is 2005 Aus Idol, without the naming rights, Dicko and Marcia.

Also, the 2 new judges are so lame... Kate is terrible.

I suggested this in my previous contribution to this thread, but clearly if Australian Idol is all about record company execs and co to rub there hands together at the thought of a short term truckload of cash being milked out of the 8 to 16 yrs female demographic (tweens), then the X Factor is about the same record company execs and producers rubbing there hands together at the thought of a short term truckoad of cash being milked out of the over 40s bored housewife demographic. Expect some smarmy balding git, crooning MOR type nice n' easy rubbish music.

Its all about record companies using the same techniques to try and sell ice to a different set of eskimoes.

Hmm... Last night's X-Factor was awful. I don't think there was one decent performer?

And from the 6 that got through from Perth, not one of them was anything close to a potential "star"..

And the way Kate was drooling over that 17 year old was a disgrace!

Australian Idol will be back this year. X-Factor is not a replacement. That's why it's on so early in the year, cos Idol will be on in the seond half.

Yes - the X Factor is a separate show designed by Simon Cowell - the "acerbic" judge in the US and UK versions of Idol.

Completely agree.

It's a big concern when someone such as Kate Cebrano who you would assume has pride in her own (alleged) ability so openly puts looks ahead of talent. You'd think any performer with any credibility would think looks have nothing to do with talent.

I don't have a problem with Holden, John Reid, and other execs thinking like that because they are in the business of selling records where looks do matter to their fickle target demographic.

Cebrano is a disgrace to musicianship. I guess you can't expect much better from someone who's brother (Phil) is often in the B grade celeb pages of the Telegraph. One of those wanna be celebrities who wants to be famous for being famous.

I didn't see last night's episode but couldn't help myself giggling when my sister told me that the group "Pablo" got through...wow who could have seen that coming.

For those unaware - a guy sang with "Pablo" and then changed his mind and sang with another group "Suede". He chose to stay with Suede so Pablo had to re-audition. But because they had lost him at the end of the day, the couldn't reaudition in Melbourne so they had to go to Adelaide...the drama...

Pablo could have come out and rapped Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and got through in the second audition because it had been so obviously set up that this competition between the 2 groups is going to be a focus for the series

What did you all think of Cashmere H from Adelaide

BTW, I think you all have women issues..I know we are all entitled to our own opinion but why do you always tend to put down the women? I'm meaning Marcia Hines AND Kate Cebrano!

because they're both f***ing idiots. The fact that they're both women is purely incidental.

From memory Marcia copped from guys and girls. Had nbothing to do with her being female. She's either dishonest to contestents or herself (either she's aware she's not telling them what she really thinks or she deludes herself that everyone is talented) and her 'sister' act is really nauseating.

True, I really didn't like Marcia much at the end of the 2nd series either..but now seeing y'all bag Kate, comes across a bit...sexist...but Im sure it's just a coincidence. :)

Silly idea for a show. But I thought it was worth watching just for Kates comments!

"Thats what I like. Rock with your c*ck out".

Lets see Marcia say THAT!

Funniest bit was when the other two judges were discussing 'pretty boy' and Kate looks at him with a REAL sassy look and says "I want YOU"!

Hehehehe. Dirty older woman. Just the way I like em.....

Another ordinary show last show night, agreed?

Can't believe they let that "Dad" go through, who was manipulating them, as they said... just out and out ordinary...

And the girl who refused to leave - if I was one of the judges I wouldn't have allowed her to stand there firing insults at me, as poor old John Reid did. He should have fired back!

It's bad enough when one TV station tries to copy another station's successful idea, but when a TV station copies their own idea, that's just ridiculous. Obviously Simon Cowell is just shamelessly going after the money, trying to squeeze every last cent out of this stupid idea. I watched a bit of Idol, but I won't be watching any of this. I could tell just from the ads they were running over Summer that it was going to be a joke of a show.

Considering the amount of money and bargaining that all the TV stations did to try and buy the rights for this show, it sure has bombed. Probably end up being the worst money Channel 10 have ever spent.

P.S I think Australia has run out of singing talent....
