The bankrupt XFL hopes to find a buyer for the league.
The AAF filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which entails "complete liquidation" of the business. The XFL has pursued Chapter 11, which would allow the brand to live on if someone steps in and purchases it following a "reorganization of the business and handling of the debts." The Wall Street Journal has reported the XFL hopes to find a buyer by July 15. There is no guarantee one emerges, of course, especially in America's bizarre, pandemic-dominated current environment.

Former XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck has sued XFL owner Vince McMahon for wrongful termination, according to Daniel Kaplan of TheAthletic.com.

The lawsuit, as interpreted by Kaplan, suggests that Luck (who reportedly had a $20 million guaranteed contract) was terminated for cause, based on this line: “Mr. Luck wholly disputes and rejects the allegations set forth in the Termination Letter and contends they are pretextual and devoid of merit.”

The XFL ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy due to the premature termination of the 2020 season, resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. The notion that Luck did something to justify being fired for cause one day before the league disbanded operations and laid off most if not all employees is highly coincidental at best, flat-out false at worst.

The NFL needs a proper development league. they should look into buying this.

Just like i hope the AFL starts a new national reserves comp when teams in state leagues fold over covid.

Best idea. The 32 NFL owners can collectively pool together and co-own the teams. Put teams in non-NFL cities, allow fringe players and backups to learn. Farm league.

You would use the practice squad members and some others who are not on NFL contracts. and have the NFL teams run the coaching so schemes and stuff are known. obviously not the same schemes but a basic version of them so teams dont sign players to lean more about teams playbooks.

Hmm, maybe not that. I would think easier is just a whole separate farm league. The NFL owners own the teams, and hire staff for those teams. Teams can use the entire league like the XFL's "Team 9" concept. Just more pressing is having a league that won't collapse due to lack of funding. If 32 owners own 8 teams collectively, it can last.

In filing, McMahon claims Luck fired 'for cause'. Seems like a weak case, but who would be liable for the payout if the xfl is liquidated?

According to bankruptcy filings, the XFL could return with a new owner as soon as spring 2021.
The Athletic reports there are "dozens of bidders are looking over the league’s financials and interested in relaunching it next February." It had been rumored that Vince McMahon filed for bankruptcy with the intention of buying his old property back at a bargain price, but he insists that is not the case. Considering the coronavirus pandemic and personnel complexities, next spring would be a highly-aggressive return target for the ever-on-the-brink league.
