Dean Laidley 2002 Press Conference:

"There are no Birth Certificates"
"We will push the young guys, even if it means taking a step back."

I love him already.

Looks like Mick might be going now, and finally we may have a big youth policy at the team.

Very impressed with his philosophy, building the players up as young men, not just footballers, and growing the whole football club and its personnel as one.

He also said that he felt the young players lacked confidence, THAT has been my major problem with Denis for three years now. He sees it, why didn't Pagan.

The 2000 and 2001 draftees will now lead us into the future.

EXCITED!!!!!1

I love him.. I have loved him for a while..

AND I AM SO GLAD WE GOT HIM!!!

HE SOUNDS BRILLIANT!

Thanks Malthouse for teachin him some things!

Our defence will rule!

I have been reading the Rex Hunt book and one thing that stuck out from the Tigers era was the belief that was enstilled in the young blokes at the time...that they belong on the ground and in the club.

Knowing a little bit about Shannon Watt personally, the club and Dennis have ridden him hard. I remember, and have it on home video Watt being riducled and shoved about at the GF training session prior to the 98 flag.

If we hold onto him, who knows what might become of a the handy tall.

Of the list above, I would keep them all, and give Mick a lesser role if thats possible. I actually reckon Mick would make a good back line coach in this new era.

King won't be traded. You have to have some connection to the successfull past to give players something to aspire to. King was in out top 3 possession winners last season.
You would let go of some fringe players like Clayton, Cochrane, Bourke, Maclaren, as well as some veterans like Mick.
The seniour 5 or so blokes will stay.
I am not even sure of Spider Burton, to be honest.
I know he had a great year, but if you are gonna give Hale a chance this year, helping Porter could be his role...

Fair enough to give the young blokes some games, by consensus here it's been long overdue... but you don't get rid of blokes who are in our top 5-6 players just because they are on the other side of 28!

If there is one bloke Laidley would have the ultimate respect for it would be Mick Martyn. They played some great games together side by side and it will be interesting to see what his plans are for our ageing champion - I think it will be Laidley's first big test. I still maintain that as we don't have anyone else capable of standing up at FB just yet and therefore Mick is a very required player.

Laidley will know of the old blokes and learn of the new..

Our leadership trio (Some teams have more than a trio because they have more than 1 vice captain) will be one of the closest groups around..

I think Laidley will leave Mick up to deciding whether he plays on or not.. I dont think he would make Mick quit, they have played together and have a friendship of sorts I imagine.. but Laidley is only 1 year older than Mick.. which is kinda freaky.. with Laidley's thoughts on giving younger guys a go, I think Mick could possibly retire and Crowe could take over at FB.. Mick is now the oldest bloke on our list.. if he does retire, I hope he becomes an assistant coach..

None of the older guys will be forced out, none will be traded. Laidley has played with them, he knows that they are quality and mean alot to the club, and he is friends with them.. I dont think he has any ideas about getting rid of the older blokes, I think he plans to give younger blokes more of a go.. cant get rid of the core, just got to develop a new one..

The only older bloke he will trade will be Carey..

Our defence is going to be something brilliant to see..

I am very excited about 03.. if only it wasnt so far away..

Trading period soon.. :D:D

Go Roos
Exciting times ahead.

I like the sounds of playing the young guys and it will really develop us into an exciting team.

King won't be traded and Colbert may be out of contract but he would play for us for two cans of coke at the end of each game, there is no way he will leave the club.

I'm hoping this isn't the bit where long-term gain, short-term pain comes in.

The players I'd rather see phased out should be the ones that don't have their positions absolutely cemented, not the ones who have absolutely no legitimate competition for a spot.

Cochrane, Clayton, Rawlings, Watt, S.Motlop have all had at least four years at the club and have not stepped up. I'm not saying give all of them the flick, but these are the types that should be replaced by new blood.

Simpson a trade?

At a dinner last night, Craig Kelly was speaker and was saying that Adam Simpson may be looking for a new home. (I don't hold everything Kelly says in the highest regard either being a player-manager)

I would have thought that he was a non-negotiable, but if players want to leave, what can you do.

Another thing D Laidley said at the press conference was 'i am not going to stand up here and promise a premiership in the next 3 years' very brave and sensible.
What with Rhode and Frawley saying it lately and the Lions still as strong as ever it would border on ridiculous to announce we will win a flag in 3 years.
Won't stop me dreaming though.

...isn't Craig Kelly the manager who said Terry Wallace wanted a new home ............. great call there Craig, not sure adam would want to listen to Craig:D

Very very exciting time. Its now officially a new era.

Next years going to rock. Wouldnt expect any more than 8-9 wins maybe less, but sheesh who really cares? We arent gonna win a flag anyways. Names like Crowe, Hale, Harris, Harding, Jones, Makepeace, S & D Motlop, Petrie, Pratt, Sinclair, Watson, Smith, Morrel, Baird, Tregenza, Teague, Watt (seems im the only one with a bit of faith that he'll come good), as well as 2 to 3 new blokes. The majority are going to get a gig next year.

If Micky goes but not under this on steam, then JYD better expect a steamful from me.

It is all well and good to say "we won't win a premiership in the next 3 years" that 'covers' the coach's job, but there is little thing called membership and sponsorship which has some relation to something called money.
The 'something' that keeps clubs afloat.

Denis made a bad call last year in trying to entice Micky to leave and he was proved wrong. JYD would do well to learn from that little experiment.

A team cannot have ALL young players, likewise a team cannot have ALL old players.

imo Pickey was BOG last Saturday until he went off injured. That is something called experience, something mighty Mick has in spades.

Have a good think just how well North play with mighty Mick in the side, not Mick's possessions, but just how well the team play.

Agree with that - I'd certainly like to see him go around for one more season.

I guess we'll know pretty soonish if Laidley thinks the same.....

I watched the press conference on Foxtel this morning and Laidley was very impressive. I liked his statement that while there is a youth policy and a lot of effort will be put into developing the kids that this would also help to extend the longevity of the senior players. This seems to be a sensible attitude as all of the young players can learn an enormous amount from playing alongside Stevo, Arch etc.

Laidley also said that the younger players would be matched with a senior player that would assist them with their development both on and off the field. It seems that the older players will be asked to play a much larger role in mentoring the younger players which should be beneficial to everyone.

Now THAT sounds promising. ;)

(But I thought that was what North was doing anyway. That is why the players at North have such a strong bond.)

GO THE BABES!!!!

Make like Big Kev

This is great news- who knows we might even see the Motlop boys together in a team for once! - IM EXCITED!IM EXCITED

Sorry, but Mighty Mick has to go. Despite his performances over many years, he was really struggling late 2002.

As for not having anyone to replace him, well we don't really have anyone to replace the space at CHF either, but blokes will put up their hand and perform to their best in an effort to improve and contribute towards team. (God, souds like a revivalist meeting!)

OOPs - I forgot to add that Laidley had most resposibility at Pieland for planning against upcoming opposition. So he is well placed to understand the strengths and weaknesses of opponents, and for that reason I think he would have a firm opinion on the viability of Mick continuing.

No, Mighty Mick stays. ;) ;) ;)
(If he wants to. Not losing anymore clubmen/assets to North, players that MAKE North.)
