Sorry to post a "serious" thread during the silly season but I'm already thinking about The Australian newspaper's Dream Team competition for 2001.

What I'm after are people's suggestions on players from their team that are either unknown or not highly rated at the moment, but who will step up in 2001.

They can be kids just drafted, young blokes who have spent 12 months in the reserves, or 24-year-old players that haven't stamped a regular game yet but who will have a big year in 2001.

An example of what I mean is Craig Biddescombe, who went from being lucky to stay on the Richmond list in 1999 - to being a regular player averaging more than 20 posessions a week.

Other examples would be: Steven King (Geel), Peter Burgoyne (Port) or even Paul Haselby (Frem).

What I'm looking for a blokes who would be currently rated by most fans as being worth only 3 or 4 out of 10, but at the end of next year might be rated a 7 or 8 out of 10.

Looking forward to your thoughts...

Interesting thread, I hope you get some intelligent replies.

Anyway, from Port I believe Roger James and Chad Cornes will both come on strong in 2001.

Des Headland will be a sensation in 2001!

And ditto Brett Voss with the Saints.

Brett Johnson i reckon by the end of next season will be established in the Hawthorn midfield. Not going to label him a champion, but he should be good value for a dream team punt. Also a smokey Bill Nicholls at half back.

I agree with Fevola and Houlihan and also would like to think that Brett Backwell can find some consistency. I believe that one of our draft picks can play some good time this year and be one out of the box but I hope we don't have to rely on that. For a different slant I think Simon Beaumont is capable of going from a 7 or so to the upper echelons of the AFL.

To pick one player though I would have to say Fevola. As a full forward he has the opportunity to make the greatest impact and he has the hands and pace to do it if he can think about things a little first.

sainter,

Surprised that you didn't include Daniel Wulf in you list? Thought he had pretty good wraps?

I'll also nominate Greg Tivendale, Mark Chaffey and Paddy Steinfort.

Hardly an up-and-comer, but I think Sav Rocca will prove a good pick up for North. I didn't orginially think we should have drafted him (certainly not at pick 30), but having thought about the possible uses for Sav (hence allowing other players to play more versatile roles), I think anywhere near 50 goals next year will see him rated as a great success.

CJH,

As you have probably seen in the chat, a few of us are pretty big Daniel Wulf fans.

I didn't choose him because I went for the younger guys that have been around the club for two or three years, have been training the house down and are ready to take the next step. Especially Lenny.

I'm hoping Wulf will get a chance but I couldn't see him becoming a regular player in the firsts at this stage like the other three guys will be.

Hopefully Koschitzke and Riewoldt will be spoken about in a thread like this in twelve months.

Luke Penny! ... especially if Terry decides on putting Grant CHB, Luke will be holding down CHF or FF.... and I've heard nothing but promising news on him during the pre-season.

Kingsley Hunter- Probably only rated a 3/4 at the moment-unfortunately- played considerably well at FB- was out for the most part of the season injured, so will hold down FB for the whole year IF he has an injury free year- will perform valiantly but not brilliantly- probably worth a 6-7 if he has a "good" year.

Luke Darcy- Taking over the full ruck duties from Scotty- Almost doubling his work load should in itself make him more highly rated-

Mitch Hahn, Robert Murphy:- I wont promise anything though- probably a bit too soon to tell and dependant on how enthusiastically Terry persues the youth policy.

Tiger Of Old....
Kayne Pettifer is a walk up ready made player... how he lasted till pick 9 I dont know, but the tiges have done well to get him!
Jubjub, you reckon Harley a good choice? I dont know what the comp is, but if its stats based, i wouldnt reckon he'd be real good?
From my mob I reckon Joel Corey could be a smokey....anyway,merry xmas everyone

At the Catters, there is potential in a number of players.

The best of the settled team would be Bizzell, Houlihan, Harley and J.Mooney

Something tells me King will be an 8 or 9 next year - All Australian Ruckman

Of the kids, Spriggs, Corey and Clarke look the best.

Keep a watch on C.Mooney, if fit will hold down centre half forward or Centre Half back, also don't forget about the recruits Murphy and White.
