I recently purchased a Thin Lizzy DVD for an unbelievable $9.99 at JB Hi Fi, live at the Sydney Opera House in 1976 and it ********in rocks.

Gee Phil Lynott was a charasmatic frontman with an awesome voice. some great tracks on the dvd include jailbreak, bad reputation, cowboy song and boys are back in town.

Great grab. I had the pleasure of seeing them in Brisbane's Botanical Gardens in a free concert backed by a group who I think were called Whacoo??(spelling). I am sure that is was 76 as well. Thin Lizzy had that dual Guitar sound that live was awsome. I might have to look for this as at that price it is a bargain.

Went thru a massive Lizzy phase, about 15 years ago. Got WAY into them. Favourite tune: Chinatown. Incredible drumming and guitar playing. Like so many bands from that era though, they sound really dated and bit lame now.

JB is a great store, if you know what's good you can pick up some classics real cheap. How's the video quality Kooley?

I picked this up a few weeks ago, as well as Rainbow Live In Germany from 1977.

I was amused to see on the cover of the TL DVD that it was being pumped up as their most critically acclaimed line-up... hmm, odd given that Gary Moore only did one album with the band (and this was AFTER that gig was recorded), and Mark Nauseef was a temporary replacement for Brian Downey who did not tour Australia on that occasion.

I think the gig suffers a bit from poor track selection, and being a short one, you probably wouldn't want to pay full price for it. Still, for $10 it's not a bad pick up at all.

the video quality is ok, you get a real feel of the seventies atmosphere through the shots of the crowd which are ace but the actual sound is average. put it this way i watched the beach boys live at knebworth (1980) before it and the difference in sound quality was immediately recognised.......it is still a good watch though.

Picked up a couple more things yesterday at JB. There was another Thin Lizzy DVD (Live At The Rainbow, London, 1978) which is also $9.99, as well as an Alice Cooper movie called "Good To See You Again Alice Cooper" for $11.48

The Thin Lizzy DVD is pretty good... not great but worth the tenner. Slight improvement on the Sydney DVD in terms of track listing, but doesn't have the same atmosphere.

The Sydney gig was actually late 1978, and the London one was earlier 1978 with the Lynott-Gorham-Robertson-Downey line-up.

I'm guessing not a lot of footage of the band's gigs exists, because the two DVDs mentioned here are both under an hour, and not the greatest IMHO.

If there was one track that Thin Lizzy could cover well, I reckon THe Angels' Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again' would fit perfectly with them.. that's just another thread in all itself. I rate 'Cold Sweat' as one of my favourite TL tracks.

I agree the Thin Lizzy version is far better than Metallica's. However I think the Dubliners version is the best.

I like that version too.

Being a traditional Irish song it's good to hear it done in the traditional style it was intended to be.

Agreed. Metallica's version makes me feel ill.

A fine group of lads. I don't think their music is dated at all.

The vids sound good. 'Live and Dangerous' is good value too - you can get that cheap for those who want to get a bit of Irish into them hehe.

Emerald and Dancing In The Moonlight are a couple of my faves.

Can I just comment about Knebworth without taking the thread off topic..... while the sound quality is excellent, a lot of the 'live' atmosphere was lost, that is glaringly obvious in 'Good Vibrations' on the 'unofficial' Knebworth 1980 CD, the crowd participation is massively louder than on the released version or the DVD. So from that aspect I'd kind of prefer if it was less than perfect.

Just an observation.

Phil Lynott was at his very best on the War of the Worlds soundtrack - Love this track.

There's a channel on TV now, Channel 14 I think which is one of those Infomercial channels and they sell this product called Thin Lizzy (don't ask me what it is), but it comes up on the caption as Thin Lizzy. I reckon at least 5 times I've stopped on the channel in the hope that it's a doco on Thin Lizzy.
