He's saying if somebody goes to an effort to change their body at the gym it's not necessarily because they are vain or have confidence issues (which you never really suggested)
Hmm.

I said El Dub must have low self esteem because he needs external validation and takes it personally when women find body types that are different to his attractive.

Andre is saying that perhaps his gym activity and need for validation is due to vanity, which is the opposite of low self esteem?

Is that right?

I'm saying I don't need external validation for going to the gym. My wife loves me no more or less since I hit 'middle life' and took up training seriously in order to remain fit and healthy for as long as I can. Any 'validation' is internal that I have at 41 made myself the fittest (and yes, from the shoulders down, best looking), I've ever been. Not everyone at the gym (or any fitness activity) that takes satisfaction in it, is doing it due to low self-esteem, needing validation or wanting everyone to look at them.

Yes, but this is the thing, I was talking about El Dub specifically. Of course people have different reasons for going to the gym. Some do it to lose weight, others for strength and conditioning, some due to external pressures, etc.

That isn't how I feel. I find laziness being attractive as quite upsetting.

There are heaps of things that have not practical application in my life that I care about.
It just seems odd to me that you say things like "I'm dying" in response to a woman stating that she finds a dad bod attractive...because you think it promotes laziness. Sometimes there's no broader message, it just is what it is. Women are drawn to differently shaped men just as men are drawn to differently shaped women. That's life.

You don't want people to judge your wife, or "shame" her, or make comments about her body size, but the way you talk about people's bodies is awful.

I don't think some posters here are understand what "being comfortable in their body" means.

People are mistaking the word 'comfortable' for 'superior'.

This thread is odd.

People are complaining that larger people, or people in general, are shaming thin people but then heavily criticise and shame fat people.

Why does there need to be any shaming at all?

I'm not saying obese people need to be role models for their weight BUT if that's the lifestyle they've chosen or if they are comfortable with the weight they are at.... who cares? It is admirable in a way, because accepting yourself, physically and mentally, is a universal process everyone goes through growing up. It's not easy and there are a lot of people who struggle with it.

If you then go on to say "well she's advocating obesity", no not really. You can still look at her as a role model for accepting herself, but not see her as a role model in terms of health.

There may be idiots out there who can not see the distinction between the two, but that blame, shame, fault, responsibility or whatever you want to call it, doesn't lie on the obese person who is comfortable with themselves.

Because I'm against the idea of everyone accepting themselves no matter what. I think it prevents self improvement.

That's under the notion that the physical body is the only measurement of self improvement.

Which it isn't.

That's a fair point but you have to look at a) has there been an increase in tax due to the influx of Australia's overweight population or b) has there been less services available or treatment denied due to Australia's overweight population?

Also, if you start looking at overweight people as an indictment on Medicare due to their increase incidence for mortality or morbidity, should that then include for people who smoke, do things like bungee jumping or hiking.... or even people who play sports. Those are all things that increase the incidence of injury.
