Oh back to the old 'taxpayer money' thread. Shan, you smoke, so I hope you don't use Medicare :drunk:
Lies. Smoke free for months :P

And when I say medicare issues, it's only for the really unhealthy and overweight. Average Joe or Jane who falls in the overweight category for BMI likely uses no more taxpayer dollars than someone who is in the healthy category.

That's a fair point but you have to look at a) has there been an increase in tax due to the influx of Australia's overweight population or b) has there been less services available or treatment denied due to Australia's overweight population?

Also, if you start looking at overweight people as an indictment on Medicare due to their increase incidence for mortality or morbidity, should that then include for people who smoke, do things like bungee jumping or hiking.... or even people who play sports. Those are all things that increase the incidence of injury.
In an ideal world, people who negatively contribute to their own health through all those means you mentioned would not be able to access taxpayer money to fix the issues they have caused. Unfortunately, there's no way to administer that.

You are right, though. If I break my leg because I'm yahooing on a kid's skateboard, it's my fault, but I will get health care from tax dollarz. Same for someone who eats poorly, doesn't exercise and develops weight-related health issues.

Many men are extremely self-conscious about their bodies and looks, because men are extremely shallow: looks in the opposite sex are far important to men than they are to women. Men are turned on visually, women psychologically.

So it’s all men know. They figure women are the same: obsessed with their looks.

Some nice sweeping declarations there, as well as calling men shallow. Nice.

So much crap in one post is hard to take in

With smoking other than cancer etc you take a lot longer to heal if you have an operation or are injured in many cases. You could just be like private health cover 3 days for x 4 days hospital for y if you in longer you pay.

Women, or at least girls, are also equally turned on by social status

Overweight people, who have no other reason for overeating except for gluttony should be shamed. It costs the Govts billions.

People always say this, but the number of fat people you see walking around every day seemingly living normal, functional lives leads me to think they're lifestyle isn't actually leading to long-term serious illness and hospitalisation as much as some may think.

Sweeping, yeah, but that's all we're doing here.

You don't have to call it shallow, but in a partner, looks are more important to men than they are to women. In a relative sense of course.

Plenty of blokes are obsessed with their own looks because they figure women think the same as they do re the opposite sex. It leads to low self esteem when it's mostly an illusion in their own heads.

I tell you what's realllly attractive? A man who's comfortable in his own skin and doesn't need constant validation from other people. Your wife obviously finds you attractive. The fact that this isn't enough for you indicates a lack of self-esteem.

Spot on. Women are much more attuned to a guys mentality and personality; they see through looks.

Not so much the other way around: men struggle to see past looks for genuine attraction.

Women are, but anyone who has been to a high school will know that it is definitely also true for high school aged girls, probably more so than boys.

What's the reason for even more girls being "obsessed" with their looks then? A lot of girls and women in relationships out there who still get their $200 hair cut once a month, put make up on every time they leave the house, get their fake tan done just before summer and still go to the gym as much as guys do.

Lets not pretend girls aren't attracted to looks either. There's a reason Magic Mike has been all the rage the last few weeks, and it isn't because Mr Tatum is an intriguing intellect. This idea that girls aren't attracted to looks is such a huge myth, at least in the circles i hang out with

But the management costs are enormous through the pbs

Because there's so much pressure on women to look good. It doesn't even have to be a romantic or courting situation; women are judged on their looks. That's how men have run the world for centuries. Is it changing? Hopefully.

Yep, women are attracted to looks too. I'm talking in a relative sense of course. Of course they appreciate and enjoy them. But for men it's on a whole different level. Looks are simply a deal breaker for men.

How do you know though, unless you know them personally? It's likely that most fat people aren't on any regular medication, any more than anyone else.

Contrary to myth, being 10-20-30kg overweight doesn't cause your body and life to shut down. Yes, it may put you in an "at risk" category for certain illnesses, but it doesn't automatically mean that you're in poor health or that you have certain conditions.

Being overweight might not be the most attractive look, but plenty of people lead normal average lives while being overweight. The justification of prejudice and hate based on "it's causing such a drain on the health system though!" is a pretty big myth IMO.

So guys put in heaps of effort into appearance because they care more for looks, and women put in heaps of effort because men care more for looks? You are making up a different set of rules for both just to get the answer you want

What a crock of shit

No answers, it's just my view. Of course they're different, the genders are different.

Women put in a lot of effort because they're judged on their looks, and they know it.

Men who put in a lot of effort (obviously not all, have a look in public) because they think they have to in order to attract women, are under the impression that women think like men and are obsessed with looks. They're not.

Being 10kg probably not 30kg plus definitely does diabetes, heart problems, joint problems etc I could go on. An individual 30kg over may have no issues but as a group vs 10kg overweight and under they would cost the public health system more
