Sharks, fishes or other marine life who have skin/shell that camouflages themselves with their surroundings. Now not knowing what they see, how do they know they're blending in with their surroundings?
They don't know they blend in with their surroundings, their brains aren't that sophisticated.

Things you don't understand / unpopular opinions thread.

Friends of friends have a kid with Down Syndrome. I saw on Facebook this morning they were on Today Tonight talking about the pre-natal test and how it could wipe out future populations of people with the condition. Errr, isn't that the idea? I mean I'm sure they think their kid is wonderful and 'wouldn't change him at all' but the whole idea of the pre-natal screening is so that parents can choose not to have a kid with Down Syndrome. They contend that not enough info about the positives of having a child with DS is provided.

There's no eugenics going on. Babies aren't taken away nor are pregnant women forced to have abortions, but it's very selfish IMO to knowingly bring a child with Down Syndrome into the world. I mean you'd love your kid if it had polio but we still vaccinate against it. Well most people do.

At what stage of the pregnancy can they do this test?

Those people are a complete anomaly as well, theres a reason there was a doc made about them because they are complete nut jobs... NO way thatll ever become the norm.

First trimester, IIRC.

Nor would I. It's also an encumbrance on others.
hmmm thats not too bad.

I am overall against abortion but having experienced a family member with a severe mental disorder I understand that it is not a life worth living and it is a tremendous burden on the parents.

Likewise. A family member grew up with cerebal palsy and spent all of his life after childhood in care facilities of varying degrees of independence. The 'see the person, not the problem' mantra is absolutely valid but minimising/eliminating the number of people born with developmental disorders is a good thing.

The grey area is people see it as 'I would never want to change/lose person X' rather than looking at an alternate timeline where they have a regular kid who doesn't need round the clock attention etc.

Does the pre natal test only check for down syndrome though or can it detect other problems?
