With critic reviews accessible from my pocket, I rarely watch bad new movies and TV series.

What I don't understand is people, often but not only in the What's the last movie you watched? thread, seeing bad stuff and going "Yeah this was shit".

Why do it to yourself?
Haven't many professional critics panned a lot of films initially that ended up being all time greats?

Maybe some people just want to see for themselves and don't need to be told what to think.

Less common than people claim. Often they find a specific review and ignore the rest.
More commonly they pump up movies that when you actually see them they are crap.

Not saying don't read them and take an opinion on board but I wouldn't base a decison to see a film purely based on what critics say.

Someone's going to bring up a specific movie that's been re-reviewed... and overlook the few hundred other movies from the same year that aren't any better or worse than critics thought. They might even conflate the box office with critical opinion in bad faith.

It's unlikely 2050 will decide Terminator 3-6 were misunderstood gems.

If I learnt one thing from Ivan Milat, dumping bodies in the Belanglo forest isn't the best way to get away with a murder.

You either need to find somewhere more remote or go to the effort of burying your victims.

I'd never be a good serial killer, I'm just too lazy.

Serial killers are lazy by nature - you always hear about bodies being buried in a shallow grave - they would have got away with it if they had dug a deep grave......lazy bastards

I'd think at least half of the 'good' movies I've watched have been panned by critics/review sites, whilst a lot of the 'rave' movies I struggle to sit through. I'm at the point now where I'll watch something purely because I haven't heard of it before.

What is good and bad is subjective. I like to watch things for myself and make my own decisions rather than listen to what other people are saying.

I have found reviews from regular people more in line with what I think than reviews from critics.

Some examples? I'm assuming maybe Oscar winners.

Dave Chappelle's Sticks and Stones Neflix special got embarrassing low reviews from critics and positive reviews from audiences. It's 35% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 99% audience score. It's also rated 8.5/10 on IMDB.

For the sake of comparison, Star Wars: The Last Jedi got 91% and 44% respectively. Why would anyone listen to what critics think? Even Game of Thrones Season 8 got 56% and 32%.
