Imagine if they re-made Titanic. That ocean liner built in Ireland and sailing from England to the US in 1912 was saaa whitewashed. Needs more diversity KPIs.

The counter here, how much would it have impacted the story to make Leo’s best mate a black guy?

I don’t really care but people losing their minds over POC cast in films like that is pretty amusing

There's a good chance films are as good as they are ever going to be. As with any creative endeavour you eventually run out of genuinely new ideas and everything becomes derivative. On top of that fewer people want to include things like racial segregation in colleges in their films because everything is viewed through a modern prism.

How did Jenny sexually assault Forrest?!?!

Depends how you view it, none of us even considered that she did in 94, now, he has the intellect of a child, did he know what was happening, did he consent, does he even know what that means (again, not my opinion, I love Forest Gump but that’s how it’s discussed if it’s made now)

In something like Star Wars (VII & VIII) it's annoying because like most cases it's forced, in something like Titanic it would be historically inaccurate. If someone wants to pony up $200m and make woke Titanic they are welcome to, but it won't be as successful as the original.

That’s not why something is considered problematic

Oh, so, shit that doesn't happen in real life is somehow real now?
For the record, I dislike the term “problematic” and it being applied to film. Just saying, if it’s made now, the same way, with the same treatment of those things, people will say it’s “problematic”

aaaand the mod selection criteria on here raises it's head once again.

REALLY?

Gump is pretty problematic in modern contexts.

His mom with the sexual favours for schooling
Kids physically assaulting him for being slow
Jenny’s being sexually abused
Jenny sexually assaulting Forest
The simplification of the war
White man saviour

That list goes on.

In 94 none of that stuff registered. Tom is charming, sinise is great, Penn is the original pixie dream girl. It just works nostalgically but re watching it... rough

Because none of that happens anymore and it doesn't reflect real life?

Obviously any re-boot would need a script re-write to better reflect a less problematic 2019 life

His mom doing sexual favours to fund her opioid habit
Kids physically assaulting him, recording it on their phones, uploading & sharing it online
Jenny sexually abusing underaged boys
Jenny having a sex change, changing her name to John and making Forest his wife.
General apathy to war(s)
'Woke' saviour

Because there wasn’t a single black person on the titanic? Don’t forget jack won his ticket in a poker game as did his mate. Would it really have impacted the film? Probably if you’re deliberately looking to be outraged.

I’m not sure you understand what problematic means and who says it or why. Feel free to put your hand up for modding, it takes all types.

There’s a bunch of first stories coming out in the last few years (first woman in the Supreme Court, first black judge etc).

Thats a product of the changing ideas of Hollywood. Doesn’t have a lot to do with making Jacks best mate black instead of Italian American.

If you can make a good story out of something then great. Movies are made by story lines and characters.

If you are just throwing minorities at something to appear woke then it's cringeworthy. I use Star Wars because it's a simple example but everyone remembers Leia, a strong female lead. Everyone remembers Lando Calrissian too. They were just characters, not token picks. Is it racist that the bad guy is black (well white, but voiced by a famous black guy)?

The new ones are putrid. Made a big deal out of having a black storm trooper in the promos (when everyone knew that originally they were cloned from a Kiwi) then threw in as many nothing characters as they could to include as many minorities as they could. And most of them aren't memorable.

That might just be because they’ve really mined that ip to its death more than “token” casting. I take your point though best character/actor for the part. Just saying plenty of people (not you) go in with the mindset that the film will be trash because of the “token” casting and your mindset before seeing a film impacts the way you view it.

I'm no expert on the manifest but apparently there were 3. Like I said, it was a boat built in Ireland sailing from England to the US. Everyone knows that if it wasn't 100% full of white people then it wasn't far off. Which is fine, it's an adapted version of an actual event. Why reinvent history to replace Leo with Denzel?

Well im not talking about recasting Leo... that presents a whole bunch of other stuff you’re talking about (including losing the chemistry of the leads who turned out to be one of modern cinemas great leading couples).

Again the point is one person of color being in the film wouldn’t have made much if any difference to me or likely you but given the history of casting and white washing might have been helpful for a whole group of people.

Haha none taken. It was a great year for movies. Three of my all time faves right there.
I am a massive King fan so I get it but Pulp Fiction was a bolt from the blue for me at the time so to speak. I was actually offended it didn't get more awards.. and then not long after they did the whole Halle Berry/Denzel Washington best actor/actress thing despite Training Day being a bucket of pus and I was like ohhh okay this whole thing actually is a completely contrived pile of shit. Play on.

I love shawshank but even i can admit its a tad overrated

I watched Pulp Fiction again recently and I don't know whether it's because I'm 25 years older since I first saw it but I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did in my mid twenties. The glorified over the top violence just feels so unnecessary to me now.

It is

Great movie, but people seem to go on about it because it’s what everyone else does. They think it makes them look cool and deep to call it their favourite movie.

The Green Mile is better

I can't watch it anymore. Nor Reservoir Dogs. Just seen them too many times. Yet I could watch Forrest Gump again. Ironic no?

The Green Mile is better
Very much agree.
