This is why Myki is rubbish. Well, there are other reasons, but this is one. Best to go into a 7-Eleven and buy one.
i have an octopus card for usage when in hong kong. never had a problem with it. dunno why we had/have so many issues with it here.

everyone uses the octopus card in HK, everywhere. trains, ferries, 7-11 to purchase consumables, even some cafes have facility for you to use the card. everyone wins, no one complains.

when i tell someone (late 20's and she has a degree in business studies) that for a web-site to work for them properly they'll need to clear their cookies, cache and temporary internet files, they don't know what to do...

i know you can get a degree without knowing how to use a computer but clearing your browser history is pretty much bottom of the rung stuff.

People who change the sports teams they follow. A guy I know recently decided to begin supporting Sydney after previously being a Saints supporter, and has followed 4 teams in the last 2 years (St Kilda, Bulldogs, Geelong, and Carlton). I mean WTF?!

Last time I used the "I am an idiot from Perth and don't understand this wacky eastern state technology excuse"
Yep, that should do the trick. Even though they could have saved themselves a whole lot of time, money and hassle by just taking the SmartRider system from here and using that.

Years back I lived in Geraldton for a while. After moving back to Perth I still had GN plates on my car for a couple of years. Used to get away with all sorts of stuff like going down the "taxi and bus only" lanes in the city on the basis of "I'm from the country, I don't know what's going on".

That works well in the UK too, just put on your broadest Australian accent and you usually can get away with most things. The English like it too because it reinforces the dumb Australian stereotype that they are so fond of.

People that criticise the Bell Tower, apart from it being a bit small I don't get what's wrong with it.

If anything needs to cop flack is that eye sore Convention Centre, the thing just looks like a bloody big shed.

The convention centre is just the wrong way around. On one side it faces the arse end of some other buildings, so we'll put the entrance there. On the other side it overlooks the river, so that's where we put the loading docks.

Well it worked and it's also the truth.

Myki is impossible for someone who has just come for a weekend to understand.
It's alright mate, i've lived in Melbourne my whole life, and i don't understand myki, and the way that the same trip can cost you differing amounts on different days. Stupid system that wasted a crapload of money.

I should probably clarify that it isn't meant to do that, it is just a bad system. It gets especially bad when it goes down, so you can't swipe on, or off. If you don't swipe off, it starts to charge you more. Just a baffling decision to bring it in, considering Metcard did the job just as well, if not better, than Myki

Pay? For trams?
To keep yourself legal, get a Myki, and swipe at one of the machines (about one third of) everyone else swipes at. Trams are great once you get used to them. Standing in the middle of the road waiting for a tram can be a bit daunting at first. You need to get used to them to get the best out of Melbourne though.
This. I mean WTF? I was astounded when I finally realised these green signs in the middle of the bloody road were tram stops. There's a non-platform stop right at the street corner where I'm staying, but I'll keep walking the extra 30m to the platform station around the corner thank you very much.

Will have to get a Myki for when I go out to Woodend on Sunday, am dreading the task. We have a similar system in Brisbane, but everyone seems to think Myki is terrible, I guess I'll find out why.
