Well you were.

I put on makeup at home, the phone stays in the handbag- oh yeah chatting to friends in the car is a REAL distraction. One woman colliding with you doesnt = women tend to be worse drivers.
Hold your horses, I never said all women are worse drivers, some women are good drivers and some guys are terrible drivers. In my experience though women tend to be more easily distracted and less alert to their surroundings. It wasn't just due to that one woman colliding with me that made me have that opinion, I've known plenty of women like that including my younger sister who I hate being in a car with when she's driving.

Well I'm not. :). K, nw.

Geeze, saw an Ambulance, lights on, on the other side of the main road I was driving down today.

It looked like it was stuck in traffic, along with the rest of us. Some people are srlsy ****ed in the head... or got their heads up their arses.

Quite a few people wear headphones with music pumping while they're driving so they don't hear stuff like sirens, pretty stupid and dangerous. I sometimes have my stereo fairly loud but I can still hear noises around me like sirens.

Some people are just dumbarses though and don't realise they need to get of the way for emergency vehicles.

I've managed to avoid accidents purely through noticing the erratic or inattentive driving of others hundreds of meters before the impact. The old lady who is slow on the gear change, with the v8 behind her - pulling away from the lights you know the v8 will hit the anchors as she struggles from 2nd to 3rd whilst he accelerates to 60. The guy who moves into the fast lane, when there's stationary traffic 200m up the road - is going to push back into your lane at speed. A slight lifting of the accelerator vs a sudden brake and concertina effect behind.

Distraction and lack of awareness is the biggest factor on the road for mine. Anything that influences your ability to be alert (including driving auto) increases the likelihood that you are being a bad driver.
So very much this.

People who get caught up in saying things like I'm a good/bad driver because e.g., I follow the road rules, I speed/don't speed etc. completely miss the point. 99.999999% of 'good' public road driving is having good situational awareness and being able to avoid accidents by noticing things like this. You have provided some great examples.

If you could accurately and sufficiently test for 'awareness' on the roads and only give licences to people who meet a reasonable standard you could probably do away with all of the 'one size fits all' restrictive rules (e.g. Speeding; a road might have a 24/7 any condition speed limit of say 70 when in reality the safe speed for that road could be anywhere from 30-90 depending on actual conditions at the time) and greatly reduce the road toll.

Unfortunately nowhere really 'teaches' it and even then experience is probably the only way to really learn it well, plus you will never be able to accurately assess it in a 20 minute drive.

Being aware is everything, if you need to jump lanes in a split second for a dog/person or something you need to know who's where, what speed they're doing, and whether it's better to slam the anchors and pray for the best or swerve. Swerving is not the best decision most of the time and yet everyone does it.

If you're country driving and a kangaroo jumps out, never swerve, ever, slam on the breaks and brace. A lot of accidents are caused by people swerving at 110km/h.

The other thing to note is anyone tailgaiting somebody else, they are more often than not shit drivers, if not they will be aggressive at the least and they will be more likely to make poor decisions.

.
And what, like swerving head on into a tree or something, which is so much worse?

Yeah driving through the country (which isnt that often), is my no1 fear. Have had kangaroos jump like 50M down the road, but never right in front of me -touch wood-

How much damage does a roo do to your car anyway? Break windscreen? Dent?

It just says 'take the back streets'
Glad to help.

Yeah anyone that tailgates is an idiot, especially in wet weather as you have no time to react to someone in front of you slamming on the brakes.

Never come across a kangaroo out in the country, biggest danger is falling asleep on long stretches of road late at night which I almost did once.

I remember hearing about a kangaroo crushing a driver to death.

just hear the water running that is all. it's a heritage townhouse complex and our house and the neighbours house were both part of one long hall so when the redeveloped they cut it in half to make two houses. but they only put a single brick wall instead of double brick (typicaly dodgy developers) and that is where my room backs pretty much backs onto their shower.

Driving along you see a car on the side of the road in a nice position and it has a piece of cardboard placed in the windscreen.
I know what it's therefore, my dog knows what it therefore, someone from a tribe in Papua New Guinea knows what it's therefore.
So why do they put FOR SALE and not the f$@&ing price on it!
Just gets me
