WARNING: There is a high level of schmaltziness in this post.
The greatest thing happened tonight!
I came home from work, buggered as all hell. I walked into the kitchen, and who do I see sitting outside, reading the paper, sinking a beer?! My bloody brother, who flew from NYC to spend two weeks at home! No one had any idea he was coming home; we all thought the next time we'd see him would be in Connecticut at Christmas!
I ran outside and gave him a massive man hug, and asked him what the shit he was doing here. He said he was allowed to have some time off as he worked throughout the entire Fourth of July period. Anyway, we thought it would be funny to have a bit of fun with Mum, Dad and my sister, and their finding out about his arrival home.
Mum was first. She came into the kitchen, and my brother walked behind her and said "Hey mum, what's for dinner? I'm hungry". She goes "I don't know, what do you feel like?", before realising it was my brother who was asking her. She started jumping up and down, crying and laughing and screaming, giving him a massive hug and nearly strangling the poor bloke!
Dad walked in the door maybe an hour later. Dad was in his office when my brother walked in and said "Dad, do you wanna see a movie tomorrow?". Dad goes "Maybe, what are you keen on?", like Mum, initially not realising it was my brother asking the question. He looked up at my brother, ran up to him, with a massive grin on his face, and gave him a big hug. "Jesus, what the hell are you doing here?!" he goes. "I was in the area and thought I'd pop in for a cuppa". Dad was beaming.
The next person on our hit list was our baby sister, who was at a friends house getting ready to go out for dinner. My brother facetimed her. She answered all excited to speak to him, and they chatted for a couple of minutes. She thought he was calling from the States. Then Mum, Dad and I got in behind him and yelled out a bunch of incomprehensible jibberish. She's like "Wait; what the hell?! Where are you?!". Dad thought it would be funny to convince her that we'd taken a trip to New York and left her at home, but she obviously didn't buy that. "Oh my god; you're here?!". She started bawling her eyes out said she was coming straight home. Ten minutes later, we heard the front door slam and in she runs, nearly jumping on the poor guy.
I'm really happy he's here. When he left for postgrad in the States seven years ago, I was just finishing high school. He would always want to talk to me about whatever was bothering me, he'd always want to hang out, and he'd drop everything if he had the slightest suspicion something was wrong. So when he left, it was bloody hard. Don't get me wrong, my Dad is pretty much my best mate, my Mum is awesome, and my sister and I are really close. But my brother and I were inseparable. The best of mates. It kind of sucks seeing him because I know that soon, he'll have to leave all over again. But right now, I couldn't be happier.
Oh, and if you're at Bank Street Social tomorrow night and you see a 30 year old lad drinking two drinks at once, dancing with a group of girls, and his 24 year old brother next to him sinking beers and getting amongst it, be sure to wander over and have a chat!

I'm jealous of wholesome. Splitting up is the best thing my parents ever did.I hate wholesome, I like me some disfunction.
I hate wholesome, I like me some disfunction.
I hate wholesome, I like me some disfunction.
Disfunction gives you more entertaining family functions and xmas dinners.
Depends on level of disfunction. Probably more fun as a neutral rather than being in the middle of it.
Croweater's life sounds like something out of a tv show with his family being the perfect tv family like Family Ties or some such.
You guys are making me homesick. 2 months to the day I'll be boarding a plane home.
Dysfunction is awkward for me. My ex-girlfriend's extended family was dysfunctional. Christmas was just wonderful. Petty bullshit about god knows what, passive aggressiveness, bickering. I never understood the need for it. I also never had the time or patience for it.
I wouldn't say we're perfect. We all work (or in my sister's case; study) long hours, which can be challenging. What it means is that we try really hard to make time for each other. I'll go to car club days with Dad, we'll go cycling together, or we'll grab a few beers. Mum and I go for dinner every couple of weeks so we can catch up properly. My sister and I likewise, although she prefers brunch. As a family, we attend various things together, which is always good fun.
I don't know. I trust and respect my family with everything and it's reciprocal. I think that's the reason we are a pretty happy family. Not perfect, but happy.[SPOILER/]
