People who are up in arms about hot cross buns being available at supermarkets. Talk about first world problems.
surely only religious people can be upset about this?

that being said I do know people who think they have to eat fish on good friday despite not being religious just because it's "what you have to do" uhm no it isn't

I don't eat red meat on good Friday and I don't illustrate depictions of Mohamed.

Simple things one do to not come across a campaigner.

"do what society tells you to do and be a sheep otherwise you are a campaigner"

red meat on good Friday hurts no one.

but we live in a society that preaches individuality yet expects conformity.

but like I said, if you are religious and you believe in it, then follow it.. If you are not, then don't worry about what you eat on GF.

When I was a kid Good Friday was the one day of the year my mother decided to be a practising Roman Catholic by making us eat fish. That was as far as it ever went. Never understood it and I kind of go out of my way to not eat fish on GF now. Call it my silent protest against the church.

Your ma is a recovering Catholic, my mother's side of the family are full of people like that. All of a sudden they apply their Catholicism for no better reason that they had it kicked into them as a kid, it's like muscle memory.

I saw a vox pop on the news the other night where random shoppers were saying it's "wrong" and "disgraceful". People are stupid.

hot cross buns are too good to only be sold at easter anyway. should be available year round imo
Exactly.

Growing up we never ate meat on a Friday and it does become habit forming. Although I no longer practice my religion, my husband and son still do, so while the standard "no meat Friday" has gone by the wayside we do still abide by it on Good Friday. The thought of not doing so doesn't even cross my mind

As for hot cross buns, they've lost their significance now - in my day (shakes walking stick) they were only available the Thursday before Easter and only eaten on the Sunday morning. This is why very few now have the cross on them

When I grew up I remember being told at some point they were called hot cross buns because the idea was they were only baked the Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun morning & to be consumed while still warm (& only then, not at any other time thereafter).

have just been informed that woolies do in fact sell them year round but will only bake like a pack or two normally as no one buys them. they also dont put the cross on unless its the easter or lead up period.

Interesting. Can't say I've noticed. Must be the lack of pseudo religious branding.. or some campaigner always gets there before me since there's only a pack or two.
