Haven’t watched it but heard it’s popular. Is it promoting suicide or something? I imagine that would be the audience you’d want to reach if it’s more of a drama/education thing.

It's not intentionally promoting it but inadvertently it is. Our school has had to do several counselling sessions around the show.

I don't think the show promotes or romanticises suicide. If its pushing kids to talk to counsellors then thats a good thing.
100% unfortunately all the stuff this show addresses is real and honest. I read an interview with Selena Gomez who was a producer on the first season they talked about how in the books
the suicide is from sleeping pills and they didn’t feel that showed how horrible it really is so they changed it to the wrist cutting in the show which was confronting and brutal
firstly it’s a tv show, it has trigger warnings they let you know what is going to be shown and discussed before they do it, secondly why shouldn’t it be shown or made even? This stuff is real, I suppose we would be better of pretending it doesn’t happen, or just not discussing it.

It's not pushing kids to talk to counsellors. Counsellors have had to step into some situations which have arisen as a result of students watching the show.

It’s certainly allowed my teens to speak to me and the missus openly about suicide, bullying and other things.

Has been used positively in my household

That's great. But I'd be guessing your kids aren't really at risk. For students at risk the show has a lot more negative effects than positive ones.

Youre upset at producers for making a show that not only resonates with its target audience but has been considered and messaged in a way that’s supposed to encourage discussion amongst peers, parents, teachers, counselors etc. I’m not sure if you watched season 1 (haven’t had a chance to watch season 2 yet) but it did absolutely nothing to glorify the behavior of the kids or the suicide itself.

I would argue this, especially with my 14 yr old girl. It has helped come out from some dark clouds that constantly hover, no matter how well she is doing academically & athletically.

However I understand your point and can see how it negatively affects people and their families .

What it has done is bring it smack bang into the light. That simply is a positive, it depends on how the adults in care of the kids use it for mine. That, unfortunately, is out of anyone’s hands.

No. I haven't watched the show but apparently season 2 is a lot more confronting than season 1. I know from several situations just at our school that is producing some pretty nasty outcomes.

You probably also think violent video games causes school shootings in the US despite thousands of kids playing them every day.

How can you make such judgments then when you've not even watched it? Sit down, watch it, and make your own assessments before you start leaping to criticisms.

The show is incredibly confronting, but you know what? So are teen suicides. It happens and nobody talks about it, or wants to talk about it. 13 Reasons Why has bucked that trend.

No. But I think it definitely increases the risk factor amongst students who may be prone to violence. Just like I think that for the majority of students watching 13 Reasons Why will have no ill effect but for a small percentage of students at risk it definitely does.

As I said, from situations that have arisen at school that I have been privy to as a result of students watching the show.

Probably give it a watch raskolnikov - so you have all your bases covered?

Good luck in the fight, remain vigilant and keep talking!

Yeah but you're making judgments about something you've not watched.

I understand some situations at your school have probably arisen as a result of the show, but at the end of the day it's literally just a show.

Season 2 has one scene and a follow up action that has caused all the controversy, if you want to google what it is I’m sure you can, as per season 1 that scene was discussed with mental health professionals, counselors, teenagers who have been victims of similar incidents and as per season 1 it was shown for both the narrative and for the fact that stuff like it happens and we all need to be aware of the consequences.

If we stopped anything confronting from being shown in television and movies that doesn’t just stop it happening in real life. I don’t often advocate for televisions shows having positive social impact, for the most part I think they are done for entertainment and ratings but 13 reasons and the measures they have taken to try and show the impacts of bullying and mental health is certainly trying and frankly, in my opinion, succeeding.

My daughter suffers from extreme depression and she found it quite confronting and thought that the warning at the beginning could of been a lot stronger and I think they did do that after the first viewing. Although she watched the whole series she has decided in the best interests of her MH that she won’t wstch the second. She was shaken in how strongly they chose to display the grief of those left behind. She said that when the thoughts do begin to start to creep in, she does now find herself pausing to think about that impact but she also said that when she’s at her darkest point she is just looking for an escape not a reason for staying.

I suppose the fact that we are all talking about it is a good thing because for so long it’s been a taboo subject
