Yeah but you're making judgments about something you've not watched.

I understand some situations at your school have probably arisen as a result of the show, but at the end of the day it's literally just a show.

I'll probably sit down and binge watch it at some stage. But my perception of it as a 50 year old male with no suicidal thoughts is going to be a lot different than a 15 year old girl with thoughts of suicide.

Coincidentally this email just came through from one of our school's guidance officers.

Hi Everyone,

We have had some information come out regarding the television series 13 Reasons Why. The target audience is teens and deals with some serious issues around suicide, harassment and sexual assault. You may be aware that 13 Reasons Why, Season 2 officially launched on Netflix on Friday May 18 at 5pm.
In light of this seasons release and the themes it confronts, our school has decided to manage our students who may be effected by this television series, in the following way. If you have any students raise this series or make reference to its content, please shut down the conversation. If you notice anyone who is affected or seems troubled please direct them to the Support Team at the end of the lesson. However, when a student is not coping in class at all please direct them immediately to the Support Team with someone to accompany them so that we know they made it to see someone.

Isn't the show MA in Aus anyway? A 15+ restriction?

Kids shouldn't be watching. I know they will anyway, but they shouldn't be. I shouldn't be playing train tracks and it isn't the fault of a train for existing if I get hit.

The MA also translates to an American R18, so no excuses over there.

If children are watching things not designed for them, there's should be no recourse for grievance.

If people over those limits are watching and affected, play on, but they aren't the subject of my post.

I have seen it in passing though, as my partner watches it (attempted suicide in the past (long before we got together)). I think it is naive to suggest nothing is glorified, intentionally or unintentionally. The character killed herself, left tapes, and the school continued to talk about her for years after. That would appeal to some people in bad headspace.

I haven't seen 13 Reasons Why, but is this similar to when Breaking Bad was airing and the Helen Lovejoys of the world, who probably hadn't seen an episode, went around saying that it promoted drug use?
Not quite. IIRC a lot of the negativity surrounding season 1 came from shrinks who were worried it glorified suicide.

That’s a little oversimplified, not to say it’s wrong and obviously open to interpretation, people could watch Saving Private Ryan and say it glorifies war or for a more crass example, The Human Centipide glorifies elective surgery. Because some might see it that why doesn’t mean it’s right.

Also the skinny dorky looking main guy actually is ripped with an eight pack, so I don't really get that.
He’s skinny and hence he has abs, he has no chest or arms it’s actually a pretty solid representation of skinny teenager with super high metabolism

People who go over the top in their feigning of ignorance about social media, just to hammer home the point that they're far too cool to use it. I hardly use Facebook at all (just to look at companies and a couple other group pages), but I don't prostesteth too-eth much-eth and shout it from the rooftops.

A couple of guys I know, who are internet-savvy, suddenly fake incompetence on a computer when there's a Facebook page on their screen. They're like, "Eh, is this Instabook I wouldn't even know how to register. How do I search on this thing? How do I type in the box thing? Where's the cursor?"

So because you weren’t it can’t be? Knew plenty of blokes who looked very similar without doing a thing.
Yeah, me too.

I actually do do stuff, sports and other physical activity. Just jealous perhaps.

Tell ya what though, a body like that would definitely improve one's status in high school, regardless of what crowd you're in.

Wtf shut it down instead of using it as a tool to open the discussion on what kids thoughts are on the show - you may, just may, if you put your listening ears on pick up some clues from those experiencing the black dog that you would normally miss just from allowing a general controlled discussion. Can you also tell me how you are supposed to determine someone is experiencing issues relating to the show when the talk has just been shut down. The last line is nothing more than a school covering its arse

Can not wait to live on my own. This new place is good for the whole social side and the female housemate has pretty much stopped me smoking but the whole sharehouse mess and food going missing drives me nuts.

It’s no surprise as I’ve said on here before that I live week to week, the last thing I need when it comes to a Monday evening and I have $10 to my name is to find that my housemate has eaten the meal I had planned for that night, before he went to work for night shift so I don’t see him. I’ve got one sweet thing that I really like and it’s those Darrel Lea chocolate honeycomb balls, both housemates tend to drink quite a bit - he works at a bottleshop and she is a uni student. Every 2-3 days I’ll wake up to the kitchen turned upside down with shit everywhere. Friday and Saturday morning I’ve woken up to the original packet and subsequently the second packet I bought to replace the first one I had empty on the bench. **** me, eat your own shit.

Or the fact that I am the only one in the house with containers (probably have 5-10 as I meal prep) and they’re just freely using those to store food that they aren’t going to eat so it goes to shit and they just let it sit in the fridge, while I then can’t meal prep because all my containers are in use.

Drives me nuts.

You don't know what circumstances have led to the school taking this action. I'm sure the decision hasn't been made hastily without a lot of conversation around it.

No we don’t, but it’s hard to think of any justification for a response of “don’t let them talk about it”, that’s not helpful for anything.

Well unless you’ve had a spate of attempts or god forbid suicides then it’s difficult to work out what that reasoning would be. Have they sent an email home to parents explaining that they should talk to their kids about the show and to watch it with them and if they do have kids who are experiencing suicidal thoughts that the show is not appropriate viewing, has their been any discussion at all around the show with the kids themselves discussing the pros and cons of the show - which I doubt seeing you haven’t watched it. This is not an attack on you btw but the system that seems intent on continuing to make suicide a dirty word and instead just shutting down all conversation

This is a TV show at the end of the day with actors. It’s seems it’s because the show has got kids talking about it that people think it’s cause for concern. I have to wonder if the same guidelines would of been put in place had it have been a documentary series instead.

Most dudes aren’t taking their shirts off in high school with a shirt on you can’t see abs and his arms and chest are giving nothing away.

I was very similar to him until about year 11 when weights started working a bit and no one knew or cared. If he doesn’t have the confidence in his body to show it off there is no reason think anyone would know.
