Could "third man up" be Collingwood's kryptonite?...
The tactic would make the Pies more accountable, because they will have to be wary of opponents hitting the ball at pace and kicking goals on the burst.
Collingwood, with no incentive to bang it clear, uses "third man up" less than any other club in the competition.
Other clubs are now queueing up to exploit it.

I have already expressed my opinion that Kruze could be better used at the moment as a bona fide midfielder...and as a third man up could be invaluable if the thoughts in the article are valid...

I would have thought that putting a man behind the ball would stop this having any effect.

Plus it can't happen with center bounces.

So because Robert Warnock is 6cm taller than Darren Jolly, he should be able to clear the ball 25m at every contest?

Nope but he should be able to break even at worst and save us from wasting someone extra flying in the ruck.

Pies and cats don't use third man up for good reason.

It's not about breaking even, or even winning ruck contests. Warnock could win 90% of ruck contests and Collingwood would still win most stoppages they are that good.

Third man up is about clearing the immediate area, and not allowing them to win the clearance in close where they excel - not about which ruckman wins the ruck contest.

Gibbs and Robbo are quite adept at it.

The article isn't saying our rucks aren't good enough. It's saying the Pies could be vulnerable against 3rd man up situations.
So your point isn't really relevant?

In that case drop warnock no need for him if going to use 3rd man up.

I reckon the pies would love a team constantly having some clown go third man up leaving someone like Thomas or Swan free to charge away from the clearence unmanned.

The article is referring to the lions game i assume when the pies were missing half there side and were completely uninterested in the game.

Not sure i would be jumping at those tactics.

no third man up unless they are belting the absolute suitcase out of it to clear the congestion. Remember if the third man goes up he leaves 1 player all on their own.

Problem is, if this is the case, the third man up seems to be our Kryptonite too. .. We actually matched Collingwood in clearances in both our games this year (+1 and -1 differentials). .. Hawthorn used a constant third man up to good effect in the first half against us. ..
