Dear Mr. Hopkins
We acknowledge reciept of your email 12 May, 2000 concerning the idea of playing an AFL match during the Olympic Games to help promote our code.
More than twelve months ago, we reached agreement in principle for such a match with SOCOG. The game was being tentatively scheduled for 9 September, 2000 at the SCG, about a week before the opening ceremony for the Sydney Olympics.
Unfortunately, the route of the Olympic road cycling event was changed and the SCG will now be used as a major staging point for that particular event and as a result, was not available for an AFL match on 9 September, 2000.
There is also no other venue in Sydney capable of hosting such a game at that time.
We were obviously disappointed with not being able to stage an exhibition game in Sydney linked to the Olympic Games but the final outcome was beyond our control.
Many thanks for taking the time to write to us and I have taken this opportunity to enclose a copy of our 1999 Annual Report which hopefully explains in some detail our policies and key strategies.
Kind Regards,
Tony Peek
