Roast This off season, significant changes need to be made

Someone in another thread mentioned Hodge for coaching. Reckon he'd be a great get.

Saint Nick might be a handy mentor for Toyd and even English to develop their forward craft. Even stringer.

There it is 'forward craft'. Have you been listening to Frawley and Mooney? They were banging on about it all day on Saturday like it was some complex science.

I came into this year with great optimism based on the talent we had and the idea that "we could not have such a bad run with injuries two years in a row". Having such injuries two years in a row might just be bad luck but how many times does it happen before you investigate whether it is just bad luck or maybe there is a conditioning reason?

Etihad.

Nope, as per Mr. Walker, other teams play there and have **** all

Off the top of my head

Wood got injured at the Gabba
Morris Cairns/MCG
Stringer Etihad/MCG/Ballarat
Bob Etihad (very late in the game)
Jong Etihad (might be the only legitimate Etihad injury of the season)
Adams SCG
Campbell repeat training/mystery injury/VFL re-offender
Roughy preseason game knee
R Smith preseason game knee
Cloke thug Ziebell
Dunkley Etihad (shoulder)
Lipinski VFL
Greene VFL

Concussions
Libba Canberra
Picken Subiaco
Boyd Etihad

Then all the s**t mystery injuries that come out midweek when we think we get away unscathed on the weekend....

The injuries have occurred all over the shop and not just at Etihad, imo our injury prevention methods have been poor.

That's because other teams have teams of 4 or 5 exercise physiologists with leaders in their field who have spent 8 years writing PhDs on AFL specific injury prevention methods and we have a guy who used to bowl a bit in the Sheffield Shield.

Looking at our team right now, we have not one single reliable forward with the possible exception of Dale, who is fast becoming a shining light down there. Unfortunately, if we can't trade in or draft better candidates, we are going to have to keep all the 'cameo performers' on our list.
Agree. This is T Boyds role. He needs to start playing there and developing. Surely a second ruck role is Roughys job, and we target a first ruck who can hold down the role until English comes on.

If they spent 8 years writing their PhDs then I guarantee they will be hopeless workers!

Heres my take
Get unfit players fit
Specialist coaches in area's they have expertise.(not here for job resumes)
No buying of second hand players from other clubs.(better to train your own)
Kicking and aerial specialist coaches employed.
Clay Smith to watch old Terry Wheeler tapes and become a back pocket plumber.
Ditto Mitch Wallis HBF watching M Boyd 2015 and 2016 seasons.
No drafting of any more short players(too many smalls upsets the natural balance of a team)unless they can play tall like Picken.
Find a Rioli or a Tupungwuti even Betts forward type player.(variety is the spice of life)
Give Collins a chance on the gorillas or give him a new role as a forward.
Play English every game no matter what(unless its raining at the SCG)
Play with the same passion as 2015 ,2016

Skills and goalkicking coach needed too

Can't say it enough, our spine sucks, Young is so bloody low on confidence currently it's not funny, it could hurt him mentally these last few weeks, the talent is there but he's not ready, 2019-2020 hopefully he will be.

McEvoy and Roughy were the difference for Hawthorn while Tim O'Brien, someone who has been allowed to develop for a good 4-5 years at Box Hill, was very solid too. Last week Ryder and Dixon dominated while Patton monstered us the week before.

Toyd and Adams playing regular footy will help but we need one or two more B grade mature talls while English and Young and co develop. We need a gorilla full back to take these big forwards, while we need an upgrade on Roughy/Campbell.

we have a gorilla full back playing and developing at Footscray> Collins. Check him out tomorrow on channel seven. He is still pretty young but i would expect him to be pushing for games next year.
As i said in another post we have kids who could potentially fill holes in the senior team already on the list, the just need time to develop.

edit sounds a bit condescending but i dont mean to be. Not so much yourself but some on here dont seem to realize who we actually have on the list already.

The rest of our team is ready though, the last 2 years we have had some excellent output from our mediums which has masked some of our spinal deficiencies, but every single one of our mediums in Wood, Morris, Crameri, Dickson and Stringer have dropped off big time through injury/form this year.

Can't go down the rebuild route again

They develop at VFL level and we use someone better for 2-3 years until they are physically ready.

Why hasn't Collins been given a go then, yet Young was? Young had a good first couple of games when Wood/Morris helped him out, but he was really out of his depth against GWS and Hawthorn (was ok last week).

yep some perplexing selection decisions this year. there were a few opportunity's this year to play collins, who deserved a shot as much as young which were not taken. vs brisbane a good example.
we have a mature defender who is adequate though not great who was played last year but seems to have been tossed on the scrap heap this season in Roberts. Some of the trades sugested in other threads just dont seemto beany sort of upgrade, Shoenmakers for example.
Our bigest problem this season , to me, looks to be the lack of a strong senior assistant coach. Since Monty left not sure this position has been filled.

But, far too slow for AFL

Are we a club that is prepared to make big changes ???? Do we have the money to do so ?

The first problem obviously is coaching

We need a strong senior assistant but will Bev allow that? He seems very stubborn and autocratic at times. Also bring in at least one coach to replace Gia in a forward role and return all other coaches to 2016 roles.

I'd let Mcacrthey go and bring in someone new with a new perspective on the list and what it requires.

Hit the draft for speed and try and bring in Kps through FA or trade

with all due respect i disagree. gorrillas are not quick so dont need a quick player to play on them, and yeah i know we play a zone, but players still play on players.
if you have a slow key position player then his team mates just need to take up the slack a bit . thats where the coaching comes into it, to make it work.

Well, it's no surprise to me that he hasn't been picked all year. Bevo clearly doesn't rate him!

Or maybe he is still developing and isnt quite ready yet. two sides to every coin.
If lippy hadnt played tonight and Cloke or Dickson had , fair chance we may have won.
I dont think the match committee has actually distinguished itself this year, in my opinion we missed finals this year due to some bad selections throughout the year (amongst other issues) Cannot understand the non selection of Roberts for most of the last part of the season either, especially when we were crying out for some experience.
