I've been hearing alot of negative feedback from footy fans complaining Geelong supporters are arrogant and cocky.

2007 we were "keeping a lid on it" and didn't want to boast and be cocky. We were criticized for not being over excited.

In 2008 the lid is off and we're enjoying our success. Now we're labeled as "too cocky", "arrogant" etc.

It really irks me! Do you think it could be a case of tall poppy syndrome?

Who cares what some people say . If anyone has a right to be a little cocky at the moment it is us. Its all called Envy.

People will criticise but the fact is if it was their team in your situation they would no doubt act the same way. Apart from a select few, i think its more "confidence" rather than "cockyness" that you guys posses. And theres nothing wrong with that. Anyways, good luck friday night. Hopefully we can put up a fight and gain at least some respect out of the match.

Us Aussies love watching people fall (like Warnie, Carey when they're at the top), it sh*ts me to tears!

Thanks for the kind words, I also posted a thread in the WB section.:thumbsu:

It sure will be a more entertaining game against your Dogs than it would have been against say Sydney. I am sure it will be a great game

A similar thing happened to Essendon in 2000. Oh well, Geelong have been the best for 2 years now, has gone from almost folding to being a GIANT in AFL. They've worked they're arses off for where they are now.

If Geelong win, I want it to be a close(ish) game. It would be great experience for WB, they definitely need it.

If it irritates you dont let them know that, its exactly what they are tryin to do. Its the only comeback they got out there and they are desperate, and deep down they all know they would act the same, and probably much worse.

LoL!
I have a good comeback for some people. I usually say "When your team wins a Premiership in the 21st century then you can start talking it up"

If it's a Collingwood supporter I usually add "When was the last time Collingwood were back to back?, 2002/2003" :D

Life is short. Enjoy your success. I would be enjoying it to the maximum in your situation. You have done it tough too with a long time between premierships and enduring some of the knocks that go with it.

With new interstate franchises, it will become harder and harder for victorian teams to build successful sides. So live for the moment and enjoy your success and don't care what other team supporters say or think. All long standing Geelong supporters have thoroughly deserved the premiership and winning streak.

If my team ever won it, there would be no premiership hangover the next year. There would be a premiership hangover the next decade :)

Spot on.

There are a few who go OTT, but the rest of us are just enjoying our success, knowing how hard it is to come by and how fleeting it really is.

The vast majority of those throwing out the 'they're arrogant' lines are doing so purely out of envy, and i don't blame them, i was envious of previous premiers too.

There are people who post on other forums and other teams boards who are arrogant, cocky and insulting to teams we beat so that is how the world views us as a whole. That's just the way it is and there isn't anything we can do about it.

I liked the lid, I want it back. I think a lot of people are understating how unbelievably critical coming prelim is and have drifted mentally a week beyond.

The cockiness tag irks me too but the balance to that is some opposition supporters have shown a complete lack of respect to the Cats and their performances. So much so that natural justice decrees that they have arrogance shoved down their throats. Hence, the balance is restored.

Don't worry too much about it. There are ppl who still try to rub other ppl the wrong way with every comment. I have seen ppl brag about their side winning in 1999 and they have been sh*t for over 5 years now.
I would have expected way more cocky behavior then i've seen around on boards. Just face it we are 21-1 and in the prelim and not lookin back who are they to say anything about us. I say hope we make it to the GF and win the thing another year!!!!!!!

Tell them all to go take a flying jump into a lake of poo. Really, some people are just plain and simple and have nothing better to do than worry about us being arrogant makes me laugh. Makes me more arrogant than i really am.

I think you've put your finger on it there....the problem is that the silent majority are judged by the actions of the few... I have a whole family of Cats supporters who worry against every opponant and who have never abused any opposition supporter, but if I choose to do that here on BF (not that I would), they would be labeled by my actions.

"All generalizations are dangerous....including this one", and the words/actions of some should not be the basis of the judgment of all.

or to phrase it slightly differently: Reactions speak louder than words.

Who gives a stuff what the other teams think of us. Be arrogant, carry on like an idiot. As was suggested, they are just jealous, and would be just as arrogant as us if they were in the same situation. The amount of time we've spent being also rans and listening to other teams being chirpy, I would've thought that more people would be tempted to show a little arrogance. Every single time I used to talk football with other teams' supporters, they would always end it with some premiership related response. Now, we have that ammunition. Lap it up. Love it.

Supporters on Bigfooty are some of the most negative people I have ever come across. I would love to see a stat showing the percentage of negative threads that come up on this site. I'm sure it would be around the 80% mark. Bigfooty has become a forum to bag the hell out of opposition teams, no matter how good the team or how much respect the team deserves.

I think in the general football public, Geelong are respected for the way the club and supporters have reacted to this sustained success. It really isn't worth reading some of the rubbish that comes up on the main boards.:thumbsu:

There are tools who support all clubs, we have all met them, some of them even support our own team, which I usually find extremely embarressing.

I was sitting next to a group of Doggies supporters at SS this year and they were absolute knobs. I was cringing at their comments and could just see everyone looking at them thinking 'What a pack of tools Footscray supporters are'.

Some Cats fans are big mouths but I think most are pretty good and lets be honest, you aren't exactly bandwagon jumpers.

I dislike supporters of teams like Essendon and Carlton, smug and arrogant and are very quick to remind you of how many flags they have won, which as a Doggies supporter, is an argument that I am never going to get any joy from.

Hawthorn have so many bandwagon jumpers, they hardly had any support for the years they were in the bottom half of the ladder and now they are everywhere, which is annoying. mainly cause you go to a Hawks game and cop it from some goose with his collar up who knows about 3 Hawks players and has been to about 6 games in his life.

Eagles fans in WA are horrible, they don't have any idea about being gracious in victory as its very easy to be a big mouthed tosser when there are 40 000 of you and 500 opposition supporters.

You should try catching the train after losing to the Eagles, it is something that I would recommend to any self respecting masochist.

So there you go, I think all in all Geelong fans are fine in the majority, I hope you enjoy your success and I don't think that there are any genuine football fans out there that would begrudge you your period of happiness after so many years of heartache.

I would like to beat you on Friday night but if we don't, I hope you beat the Hawks by 100 in the GF.

One day, I hope to see the Doggies win a flag...one day....maybe...Please.

Its basically a select few from Geelong, and its mainly on Bay13.

Well, except Akermanis, who is the personification of Bay13.

Either way, its their way to try and get under the skins of a few and to gather the rest of the clubs supporters into an Anti-Geelong group. Why? Because we are successful. Same thing happened to the Weagles fans, same thing happened to the Power fans.

Didnt happen to Swans fans because people were genuinely happy for them to shove it up Demitrispew who earlier that year said they wouldnt win a flag.

I think the main reason us Swans fans got off the arrogant tag is because we were never far and away the best team in the competition, we were always either equal to or second to the Eagles.

Obviously I'd love Geelong to lose, that's my tall poppy syndrome kicking in, I love seeing the good teams lose. But as far as supporters go, you lot could be so much worse. I cringe at the thought of Hawthorn stealing the flag off you this year, as they already shit me more than you lot do and they haven't even won anything.

Enjoy your reign at the top, I know I would if Sydney were up there, and anyone who calls you arrogant is ignoring the fact that they would be loving it just as much if it was their team.
