If someone said to you..

"This time next year, you will have Wayne Carey and Ronnie Burns in your forward line"... what would you say??

I'd personally turn him into the nearest mental hospital (Alberton Oval to be exact)

I would have been telling them that we're not quite ready to give up Goodwin and McLeod just yet.

Funny things happen in footy (well the Carey thing wasn't that funny) but maybe it's just fate that all this happened for us, the Adelaide Crows, to secure our 3rd premiership in 13 years.

It doesnt seem that long ago that we were talking about "who" is untouchable in the Carey trade deal
i.e. Roo, McLeod, Goodwin etc

And here we are without losing any of them.

Let em all sling zhit about Carey being over the hill and Burns being over rated.....but lets wait and see the match ups they put em when the new season starts.

Wont be Wakelin, Hardwick, Montgomery and co...It'd just be a waste of matchups wouldnt it snicker snicker

Now if i ask the question in two years time, what would you give up? Nothing?

Good luck but taking two gambles like that isn't 100% sensible IMO but time will tell. At least you could draft a few quality youngster with the remaining draft picks, oh wait seems 36 is the first one, um scratch that idea, Plan B, anyone with Plan B.

Yes of Course....Ronnie Burns is just such a damaging footballer and so hard to match up on in the 3 good games he plays a year!

Mattner (played AFL and looked good last year)

Rutten (CHB for West Adelaide all year and a top young player)

Bock (played senior footy last year and very promising)

Ever heard of them????? For the Crows the draft picks are on top of, not instead of.

Good luck to the Powder with their draft picks. Might jag another Michael Stevens at #5!!! LOL

The statistics show Ronnie Burns has kicked a damaging 4 goals in 5 games against the Power since the start of 1999.

The Crows were "gambling" on giving up high draft picks this year, because they had 2 decent rookies (ie. Mattner & Rutten) they have been able to put on the main list. We just need to draft a young ruckman & I'll be happy.

As others have pointed out we have plenty of young players (one of the youngest lists in the competition this year). But besides that, there comes a point where you have to go hell for leather at a premiership (that's what we're here for), Adelaide have decided that time is NOW. No Plan B, its Plan A or bust.

Spot on Dave. I thought that any moron could have seen that, but then again when one throws in the words Port Adelaide ......well ........

Yes but we did have the Stenchburger to play on him. What's the chances of us re-drafting him as an insurance for the showdowns? Although there probaby isn't much point as what are the odds of Burns actually being fit for either of the showdowns.

As for your youngsters yes Mattner looks handy but i'd be a bit worried with your drafting/recruiting policy of the last couple of years what draft pick sucess have you had Angwin, this year first pick 36. I'd be a little concerned if this huge gamble doesn't pay off.

You could be right about our reluctance to rely on the draft as we have had our fingers burnt on more than one occasion, i think thats why we will see the Crows make a lot more use of the rookie list in selecting future young players,
in Mattner, Rutten & Bock that is not a bad group of youngsters to elevate to the senior list from last years rookies so expect the AFC to follow a similar path this year,
