This year's delistings

PLEASE correct me but isnt Martin under contract for another year?

If he is - is there a way to get him onto the rookie list and free up a spot that way?

If he is contracted we can still delist him, but we are obliged to either pay him out or re-draft in the rookie draft as a mature age rookie as we did with Juice and Meesen. Going the re-draft route via the rookie draft also means he's fair game for other clubs if they want to pick up the tab for the balance of his contract

This scenario of course assumes Meesen AND Juice are both not given new contracts as you can only have 2 mature age rookies at a time.

Thanks A_M.

Sounds like a fair plan to me. Delist Newton - run Martin through the gaunlet of the draft and see if he makes it to our rookie list. Then if we are keen and he's still available, we could always re-rookie Newton as well.

This risks losing both of them but I would prefer this than delisting Johnson just yet. We need him for one more year imo.

Re: This years delistings

I know! He should of been delisted years ago. Miller getting delisted is the greatest thing to happen to the club since '64.

He'll still be playing AFL footy next year, yet Meesan and Newton are unwanted by every AFL club except us. Puzzles of ****ing puzzles.

Re: This years delistings

um meesen is injured and was thus on our rookie list. In fact as twitter represents he is on crutchers at the moment. They have had a lot of set backs in fixing his leg.

Newton i have no defence for but the club knows what they are doing so let them go

Re: This years delistings

Meeson retired a few weeks ago. Think he's got a position as a part time ruck coach at either Melbourne or Casey.

Sorry if I have missed something here - but I just read the following article on the age website:
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/your-clubs-list-20101011-16exc.html

MELBOURNE

IN
Traded in: NIL
Elevated Rookies
: Danny Hughes, Jake Spencer, Jordie McKenzie, Michael Newton
Picks:
Round Three selection (currently number 52) from North Melbourne, via Hawthorn on-trade
OUT
Retired: James McDonald
Traded: Kyle Cheney (Hawthorn)
Delisted:
Brad Miller, Daniel Bell
Picks: Round Four selection (currently number 66) to Hawthorn
National draft picks 12, 32, 49, 52, 83, 100, 117, 134.

Can someone please explain if the elevated rookies page is reflective of all of these guys being on our senior list, or is it that they were promoted at some stage during the season and can be delisted?

If we promoted all of them, we would have almost no room to draft players.

Yeah I think you'll find that those rookie things are based purely on who got a game during the year. E.g Cameron Cloke is listed as getting elevated but I'm pretty see he has already been delisted.

Lazy journalism really, lift your game Age

Yeah, i read in the Herald Sun this morning that lodging's for the main list have to be in by this Friday! So expect a few delisting's this week out of the Dees.

Seeing as we are promoting Spencer and McKenzie to our main list, I'd like to see us clear out all our rookie listed players. Place Martin and McNamara onto a rookie spot which makes sure we use 4 picks at the National Draft. Can't see us using a PSD pick...

I like that option too (if it all adds up in terms of who is on and off the list). It seems as though the FD would like to use the first four picks in the draft given we traded for that pick 52 from Hawthorn.

Taking four in the main draft would be good. Can't see too many being available for us in the PSD anyway as the GC have first five picks i believe.

We will just have to be happy we got Liam, Aussie and Aaron via this avenue in years gone by. What an effort!

Agree with the de-listing Martin & McNamara then re-draft on the rookie list idea. Worked well with Meesen and Newton this year.

As for pick 52 Vs. pre-season draft pick, it depends on who might be there. Houli already going to Richmond means there aren't many picking in front of us.

I reckon there would be quite a few clubs in this conundrum. There is a bit of a cat and mouse element here IMO as teams don't ultimately know what their PSD picks will be until after the ND but the decision to use ND picks obviously is a spontaneous one in the ND itself.

Given our 4th pick is (at this stage) 52 I reckon the club will pencil it in. Most of the answers of how other clubs go about it and what the order of the PSD could be will come later in the 60's and 70's of the ND when (if) teams start passing. Based on this I reckon we'll go pick 52 by default as insurance - and tbh pick 52 gives us a rank outside hope of getting somthing decent (with luck).

Edit: just had a look on the D+T board and found this re GC:

"The GC have a number of PSD picks equal to the number of uncontracted players they didn't pick up, if memory serves, which I think is eight. These are taken at the start (picks 1-8). They can't select players from clubs that they have already taken uncontracted players from, i.e. Brisbane, Port, Bulldogs, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Adelaide, Geelong."

-Not sure if true but if it is then it makes the PSD all the more convoluted as it comes down to the clubs players are from. Also there are about 4 other clubs in front of us?

Would definitely prefer to go with a pick in the early 50's than the PSD this year. We are down the order a bit and we are behind GC. Getting lucky with a youngster should be the aim.

I guess we will know more come Friday.

I love how every second thread on here degenerates into a "worst player ever" discussion. I've only just realised now that Cameron Hunter never gets a mention. Now that was a shit player.

Darren Kowal was pretty shit! And from what i remember Luke Williams was pretty bad also. But yeah, agree with the Al Nicholson call. The worst thing that happened to us was him playing a couple of good games on Richo! Spencer could reach the Al Nicholson heights of spudness in the coming 2 years though!!!

jake spence is a ruckman, give him 5 years or your posts will pulled up if and when spencer isnt shite anymore

Worst Melbourne players in living memory:

1. Miller - Due to his longevity. 9 years of rubbish performances were hard to handle.

2. Grgic - Gutless, woeful footballer.

3. Luke Williams - One of the worst kicks we have ever had at the club.

4. Damien Gaspar - The worst full back ever. Spent more time falling over than actually standing up.

5. Don Cockatoo-Collins - Balme said the twins would play 200 games. Great prediction Balmey.

Ruckman or not, what he's dished up so far has been disgraceful. I honestly hope he does come good as we desperately need another ruckman or two to fill the void Jamar will leave in a few years. However, on what I've seen of this guy thus far, he's got a long way to go to even reach spud level...

I'll never forget when we played the Kanga's at Etihad in 2009 late in the season and Frank Spencer was having a set shot on goal. He completely missed the ball. Can't recall ever seeing that before at AFL level. To say he has a long long way to go is a major understatement...

Harsh, from memory he got his first kick whilst playing on Gary Ablett Jnr. Then proceeded to kick it into him and that was all she wrote on his career.

There were most certainly a couple of 'toughest little player you'll ever see' articles written when we drafted him though.

Heath Neville was one that left without firing much of a shot. Aaron Rogers similarly. If Van Sheik was drafted now, he'd get 5/6 years to come good. No such luck in the early 00s.

Bring back Andre Gianfagna.

Van Shaik would have been much more of a cult player if he'd played up the Sheik angle and come out dressed like he was from the middle east.

How about Ross Funk (somthing like that), Craig Smoker and Ben Beams (can't believe he played in the 2000 grand final)

There's a few duds for you lol :D

P.s I liked Luke Williams :) he didn't get much of a chance.
