Re: What Two Players are we hoping to draft with our first two picks?

A marathon runner that started playing the game 2 weeks ago.

And a undersized ruckman who will be drafted as a forward.

Should both debut in 2012.
That was during the Fanta years, but anyway.

I can seriously see us taking Stephen Hill with our 2nd pick.

He should slip to the 3rd round.

He's built like a glass of water, but surprisingly good ove head.

Impressed the hell out of me at the champs.

I agree with what you've put there Drummond but, do you think it is more important to find a gun midfielder than KPP?
You are right in terms of what we need, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out we need a KPP, and a crumbing goal kicking forward - we've all been calling out for the last one for a few years now!

I'm hopeful of a real good mid (a Hartlett perhaps).
A KPP with an ability to run an opponent into the ground and who can kick straight! - the dream!
A small crumbing forward - must be quick and a freak. Can we recruit directly from Mallee Park or Tiwi Islands?
A young ruckman
A Key position defender (someone with some bulk etc.. to replace Rutten if needed)
Late in the draft I would want a mobile tallish player, then an in and under player

For the picks then, I would hope for:
#10 Shaun McKernan - If Zeibel, Hartlett, Johnstone and Sidebottom are all gone.
#30 Tom Rockliff
#46 midfielder
#62 Phil Davis - really rate this guy
#78 Jordan Dodman - man mountain!
after that - midfielders with something special about them - either ball winning ability, or extreme pace. Hopefully an indigenous boy with pace to burn or if still around perhaps Charlie Sharples??

Re: What Two Players are we hoping to draft with our first two picks?

My first priority would be Jack Ziebell but I doubt he will be available at our pick. He is exactly what we need. A big bodied midfielder who can break open packs. If not I would like Steele Sidebottom

Its funny because its true.

I hope we draft 2 genuine midfielders with our first 2 picks, preferably both NATURALLY (not manufactured) inside players. If one can't be inside, then he must have pace and plenty of it.

Re: What Two Players are we hoping to draft with our first two picks?

sidebottom and rhys okeefe

Re: What Two Players are we hoping to draft with our first two picks?

I would love it if we drafted O'Keefe, at least he's a footballer.

I'd love to bag VVM for his post but he is absolutely spot on sadly.

Hopefully this time we do draft natural footballers, and no tall with the first pick like SC suggested on another thread as we are guaranteed to **** that one up.

The draft will be absolutely vital as it always is. I think we have a glaring need in a few areas so it’s important we have a lot of picks and hopefully have quite a few picks inside the first 2-3 rounds as we did last season. However with Jericho as probably our only realistic trade target we’ll probably only go in with the picks currently allocated to us. I’ve identified a few key areas we need to fill:

1. A key midfielder...

Great post there Drummond, that pretty much outlines my thoughts too. With our first pick I'd be going either the KPF or the Mid, depending on whoever we rate higher, IMO both are equally important. Then with our second pick, I'd go for which ever of the above we didn't get, so we get a prospective gun mid and quality tall or the opposite and unlike Fanta, I have a little more faith in Rendell's ability to find quality talent with early picks(Fanta did well with the later ones).

I wouldn't be picking up a development ruckman till our 4th pick, probably later. Ruckman are quite often difficult to pick at 18 and quite often absolute gems can be found with late picks. Small forwards are also quite often found in later picks so this is where I'd be taking a punt on them, unless an absolute cracker like Rioli came up early.

I guess i got shot down then!! :D
The problem is that people obviously rate Thompson a lot more than I do!
I ask this question, can you point to some high pressure games in which he has performed well? I can point to a few he hasn't!!!
In my opinion he is a bit of a downhill skier - great when we are up and running and on top. Next to useless when we are under the pump.
is it possible we are up and running when he is playing well? And we are under the pump when he is tagged out of it?

Possible yes. Probable no! One player does not make a team.

:thumbsu: Agreed. 2 Midfielders to go please.

Re: What Two Players are we hoping to draft with our first two picks?

You want good pace with very good skill = Hartlett

OK Pace with exception skill on both sides of the body = Sidebottom

Pace with skinny time = Blease

Their out realistic midfield options.

Thrown in a slim chance at Zeibel, Hay and Suban should still be around too.

Re: What Two Players are we hoping to draft with our first two picks?

Whoever comes first and second in this year's Brownlow!

Re: What Two Players are we hoping to draft with our first two picks?

McKernan or Sidebottom with the first pick - best available

Re: What Two Players are we hoping to draft with our first two picks?

There's bound to be one of the top 6 or 7 perceived picks who will slide and I wouldn't be surprised if it was Hartlett this year. One of Hartlett or Sidebottom would be nice.

Who I actually think the club will pick up first is Blease. Very quick, line breaker and with an elite efficiency rate. I think he would compliment Dangerfield very well when he eventually bulks up.

Would be a huge bolter if thats the case.

I would like to see us get Ziebell but I dont think this will happen.
If we get Ziebell, I will literally cry. His work ethic in clearences is amazing, and I love how he plays he game. He is expected to go top 6 and I think he will go top 6.

If Hartlett drops to 10, I will cry even more.

I would love to see Scheonmakers + Hartlett/Sidebottom/Ziebell in our team.

How does this look:

Centre: Mackay, Dangerfield, Hartlett/Sidebottom/Ziebell

Yessssss

1. Totally agree that our 1st pick should be the best midfielder available...this is what has lost us matches against St. Kilda and Collingwood.

2. Agree that we should draft a young tall somewhere. Hopefully a good one remains for our second pick. There are many question marks over our talls, and as Drummond identified, CHF is the problem area. If Gill (and McG of course) does go I would be drafting a young tall and Todd Grima.

3. A decent one wouldn't hurt and I'd try to get another but i feel the man we want may already be on the list: Myke Cook

4. Agree again! Looking at how long they take to develop I wouldn't be against drafting one, and even rookie listing another with the hope that 1 out of 2 becomes AFL standard in 3 years time.
1. Hartlett/Ziebell/Sidebottom (Sidebottom will be available at number 10)
2. Aaron Cornilious
3. Rockliff
4. Roughead

Just looking over the blokes listed to go to Draft Camp and State Screening in the Rag this morning: Tyler Brimbacombe; Remember the Name!

With Rendells "outside of the square" thinking, I doubt any of us have even mentioned who we will be getting at 10 :D
Not my opinion, but just trying to randomly guess a bloke who would be a bolter to go at #10 and would be the sort that I think Rendell might like - Nic Heyne. Bit of X-Factor, has a good attack on the ball and stands up well in tackles. Doesn't mind kicking goals. I personally wouldn't take him at #10 but I'm just trying to think outside the box and throw a new name out there.

I'm hot on Sidebottom as someone who could realistically be there at #10. I've rated him as high as #6 until recently, but other guys have pushed in front of him. From hearing a bit of different opinion from guys I really respect I don't think too many have him inside Top 10.

Rendell would like Jamie Sheahan for a later pick.

BTW, all three are Vic Country guys who tend to be less affected by home sickness. ;)
