I like the Sidebottom call, but should we still chase a forward?

I haven't the foggiest exactly who the best available forward would be at our pick would be and if it would be worth chasing them. Looking on the draft/ trading board for quality opinions is hard because of the mountain of junk you have to sift through.

In the one game of footy I saw him play I really liked the look of the local boy Lewis Johnston. I thought he looked like a natural footballer and he seemed fairly quick off the mark. I wonder if he could develop as a key forward or is he more of a second or third option? Or I guess more importantly is pick 10 to higher price to pay and is there better forward prospect who would be a available.

I saw a few players I thought looked absolute quality, but without seeing them play week in week out its hard for most off us to make a call. Maybe also why some phantom drafters are having a hard time guessing where players like Johnston will go because all they can comment on is his form at the carnival.

I like the look of Sidebottom, however would he be as popular if his last name was simply Smith :D

Our midfield will be stacked with quirky names and blonde rinses

Commetti will be in commentating-heaven.

Rendell was really talking up the KPP prospects in the one of the televised games ... said something like he thought we'd see some of the best talls ever come from this draft :D. So good chance he'll go tall with the 1st rounder ... either that or he's creating a smoke screen, hoping some quality smalls will slip :D.

Rendell will go best available, but his list in order may contain many KPP high up - We do need a CHF, and we need one now because they'll take a good 3-4 years to start really showing their ability, which is when we should be having a decent crack at the flag.

Yeah, said he'll definitely go on a best available basis for at least the first 3 rounds, if not more, but needs tend to be factored in when you're dealing with very closely ranked players.

I think he'd have his fingers crossed for Lewis Johnston to be available ... seems like his type of player, very dynamic and versatile.

From this footage, I dont think Lewis Johnston is worthy of a number 10 pick. Just nothing really stands out that he'll be a star, or maybe i'm just paranoid on our past history drafting talls with out first pick :(

For whatever reason I'm not all that interested. He comes across as a bit of Scott Welsh clone in that he could be a very good forward but won't be a #1 forward. Admittedly I haven't seen much of him but I certainly wouldn't be spending our first round pick on him. How tall is he?

He's a poor mans Walker (although this is the sort of comment that could come back to haunt me).

But what I mean is, he looks to be a 3rd forward at best, which we have a better version of in Walker.

I'm more looking for a key forward who can take the #1 CHF mantle...like a Jarred Roughead/Lance Franklin as opposed to the Tim Boyle/Michael O'Loughlin type.

I would call Boyle more of a CHF than Buddy... It's just that Boyle isn't good enough to play consistently at AFL while Buddy is a star. Buddy is basically a crumber. He's not really a "tall". Half his goals are probably from being front and center and crumber type opportunistic goals.

Interested in thoughts on the following players, not saying they should be our first picks and don't know where people think some of these players are going to go in the draft.

Johnston - A few have already said probably a third forward but this is not necessarily a bad think for the club

Hynes - A natural forward, please I hope so??

Cahill - Seems to be a good KPP

Yarran - small good midfield/forward

Jetta - Nice little small possible forward sneak

Liesel - Good half back option

Broadbent - Good in close

Chris Hall - He is quickish and positions well under a pack

Hartlett - Looks to have class

Tapscott - Tough small forward

Interested that Edwickinga (can't remember how its spelt) is still being listed as a draft prospect but isn't he with Geelong??

Shoenmaker, Ziebell, O'keefe and Sidebottom all look good

at pick #10?

good luck with that ;)
I think you misread what I was trying to say. I was talking about the type of player rather than the absolute quality of the player.

Clearly this years Buddy Franklin is very unlikely to be there at pick 10.

I just want a pure, athletic CHF, not a 3rd tall. Best available will be fine.

actually its very unlikely to be fine. CHF's are like Ruckman, they tend to go top of the class or late. anyone who is really good enough has either already emerged (top 3 draft pick) or will emerge later (speculative draft pick).

what you're really saying is you want Cleve Hughes or similar - and I say, hell no :p

Haha, while you are historically right, it comes down to the recruiter being able to identify this talent.

So look, I'm all for our recruiters going for some spud who is rated 75th by Kevin Sheahan at pick 10...so long as he becomes a gun CHF. :)

Can anyone tell me about James Boyd (South Adelaide)? Seems to be in best players each week, rover - inside midfielder type. Could he be a late pick or mature rookie pick? Any Panther fans out there who would know this blokes game?

There's already a fair bit of discussion on Boyd, do a search.

His main problems are height, frame and speed. He is has a great deal of both inside and outside qualities and natural football nous. I expect him to be drafted quite late at best, rookie draft most likely. Skipworth syndrome perhaps? But, gosh he's a real talent for Souths and I hope they don't lose him.

How is speed a problem for him? From what ive seen its one of his stengths.
