Port wouldn't do that, wouldn't even look at it.

To be honest, pick 6 may give us someone like Hartlett, Hurley or Vickery.etc but I'd much rather picks 10 and 28. Considering the depth of the draft, where 30 people that would be potential first rounders, I would rather pick up a gun mid and a promising KPF. Not that I don't rate Thomson, I just feel we have greater needs.

Port wouldn't do that, wouldn't even look at it.

I think thats pretty fair, that you may potentially get nothing for Thomson. Also, consdering the motlops, burgones, pearce, rodan .etc who are ahead of Krak, plus the fact that his less than 70kg? I don't really think he can bulk to make it to the Afl.

Anybody else have any thoughts on Yarran, watched him live yesterday in the WAFL Prelim and looked very good, great skills and composure, and great finishing in front of goals, see him as a small forward who would eventually make the move midfield. Where would he likely go in the draft?

If we can't find a genuine CHF with our first pick than I think it would be good if we picked up Yarran. I've seen him a few times and although he appears lazy or laconic he always kicks goals (which I guess is similar in a sense to Walker). He could probably be thrown into the starting line up as of round 1 next year and play a small forwards role which we desperately need and would allow Douglas to move into the middle. He certainly is a great talent and it will really depend on how he goes in the interview as he could be just like Cyril.

It doesn't have to be KPP.

Craig's words were that out of this draft he wanted to find "a natural forward", a key defender, and another mid-fielder.

Some-one like a Johnson from Geelong or a Cyril Rioli would certainly be described as a natural forward. :)

Actually I think we have the KPP's developing in the pipeline - we just need a Johnson or Rioli type to complement them..

Or Tom Rockliff maybe.

I think Cyril looks a natural no matter where he plays.

Johnson is your man.

Bottom aged KPF and probably the second best forward prospect in the draft.
I would rather someone who hasn't been playing U/17 all year.

BTW, in case there was any doubt Steele Sidebottom is the man in my avatar. He was brilliant yesterday in the Semi Final.

At least you got the first name right. Any other blokes named Steele nominating this year??

By the way, in the interest of completely derailing this thread, you were very very keen on Vesz last year, and he's come in and played AFL for a side who are notorious for taking even longer than us to play their youngsters, and done exactly what you said he would (apart from a bit of shonky kicking).

But, are you happier with the Dangerfield selection?

The way Veszpremi has performed at Sydney so far and the similarity with us in terms of easing youngsters into it makes me believe he would have fit in perfectly.

With that said, Dangerfield was a very important selection with the sort of game that he plays. We need express pace and line breaking through the midfield. Veszpremi probably won't ever have the endurance to play midfield (definitely has the pace, confidence and strength though). He's probably going to be pigeon holed as a small forward, but hey, I don't think we'd mind one of those. ;)

They are both barrel chested blokes who will run through a brick wall, so they have that similarity in their game. They love breaking tackles and crashing through traffic, have pace to burn and bring excitement to the game.

Veszpremi for me, but that's only because I have to make a choice. I'm not going to pussy foot around it and say "I can't decide" but believe me, I was very close to saying that. :o

Would be thrilled to nab him.

looks so comfortable on both sides.

Although i've grown quite fond of Zeibel too.

Thanks for that. I was just tempted to ask due to the memory of last years "PICK 10" avatar you were sporting. Given that we're all quite pleased with Dangerfield at this stage, I was simply wondering if you had changed your view on who we should have picked up, in the same way that those of us without your level of knowledge on draftees have. I find your answer quite interesting. Will be good to see how both lads go next year.

Southerntakeover will abuse me on MSN when he reads my response though.

Vezpremi certainly looks a prospect, and with rumours (god knows how true) that both us and Sydney were keen, I was hoping we nabbed him with our 2nd pick.

Looking back, i'm glad we're into the Danger Zone as he has the tank to become elite as VC mentions there are questions on Vezpremi's tank. But a small forward with hard spark about them we also need.

Overall for me, i'm happy to have Patty D

i reckon Yarran for pick 10 he's mcleod esque! he's what we need really! we've actually got tall forwards and midfielders we have enough this is the x-factor we are looking for I think!

IMO the draft strategy should be

rounds 1 and 2 - draft the best player available no matter the clubs needs

rounds 3 onwards - draft to your needs

Im on board the Yarran Train, may be exactly what we need in the forward line, the kid just looks all class.

It's a popular theory, and most recruiters use it, but I don't think you'll ever fix your areas of need if you keep filling those areas with the scraps that are left over at the end of a draft.

Hawthorn put a model into place around 2003 that ensures they address their needs across a number of drafts. It's actually fascinating to read about the way Hawthorn have built their list over the past five years and in my opinion it's no wonder they're starting to see the fruits of that.
