Murphy has shown much more thus far than Thomas. Not to say that Thomas won't be good - many of the other Carlton supporters and others posting in this thread are being too harsh on him. Both have only had a year in the system, and with much improvement in each. Thomas has a lot of potential, highly doubt he'll be as good as Murphy, but a very good player in his own right.

Thomas, however, was a draft blunder. MM made a knee-jerk decision based on his good finals series just before the draft. :)

Hand it over to the Cops whatever you're taking.

Mark my words, bookmark my post - you can decide. Thomas will be very good. He's got the ability that sees him superior to other kids (and commitment) which will take him a long way to becoming a genuine superstar of the game. He's already showing leadership qualities, he might captain the club at some stage in the future, in the same vein as James Hird, I'm being serious.

The poll is irrelevant. It's like comparing Voss, Buckley and Hird - you don't!

LMFAO at scott pendlebury.....what a mistake he was to take at pick 5...would've definately lasted till the 2nd round, collingwood couldve picked up a much better on-baller at pick 5...you still had the likes of nathan jones, shannon hurn and beau muston who all went after pendlebury...im sure you'll find that pendlebury wont be as good as the 3 players i've just mentioned

Richard Tambling anyone :D

You mean the way he stands outside packs waiting for the soft non-contested receive? Real team inspiring stuff. A leader? Hilarious. :)
Injured his shoulder in Rd 16 against West Coast by putting himself on the line of fire against Darren Glass, and came back on the field to have one of his best games of the season. He broke his collarbone in Rd 18 against Adelaide in committing himself to the contest.

Unfortunately, he's not made of tissue paper like Marc Murphy, so he came back from both injuries.

If you can provide one specific example of him avoiding physical contact, or refusing to get under the pack when he should have, I'll completely acquiesce and admit he was a total draft blunder, change my avatar to a Carlton logo and change my signature to acknowledge your greatness.

I'll be resting easy though.

Thomas does have flair and is spectacular. Yet he will never be half the player Murphy is. Murphy will be like Voss/Hird. This poll is rediculous. It is like having a Lockett vs Johns. Just silly!

U do realise that Hird is a HFF flank who can do the spectacular match winning stuff and has a run on the ball every now and then??? Thomas will most likely end up being a similar player, probably no where near as good as Hird who is a legend, but similar style.

Murphy looks to be like a N.Buckley type, just burst onto the seen and will dominate the carlton midfield for a decade.

Deledio anyone?

im going to assume u are just plain stupid and live in a room with padded walls...next you're going to tell me that griffen is better than deledio?? if they should call deledio halfer then they should call griffen quarter...coz he is 1/4 the player deledio is, correct me if im wrong...deledio did win the rising star (quite comfortably mind you) and polled 2 votes shy of the maximum given :thumbsu:

That was 2 years ago. Griffen is a much better player than he is now and will be for the rest of their careers.

Griffen has defensive skills unlike Deledio

thats fine....griffen can spend his career on a half back flank where as deledio will be winning the ball and winning matches for the tigers...i know which one i'd prefer :thumbsu:

We have a stronger midfield than Richmond so he has to earn a spot in the midfield. Deleido only went well in his first year as he spent most of the time getting cheap kicks. Richmond have a weaker midfield than us so Deledio walked straight into it. Watch out when Griffen plays a whole year in the midfield. :thumbsu:

Thomas is ********ing good. I'd have drafted him before Murphy any day. He's got flair, a better vertical leap and mark than Murphy. Mind you, Pendlebury may be better than either of them.

When I first saw this I must say I was a bit puzzled. Then I realised you are from Tasmania.

I read this thread and I wonder why Collingwood fans are bitching at Carlton supporters when its actually the Essendon supporter who started this topic that's the one clearly trolling you. Why doesn't he just compare Thomas to Judd and get the mis-match over and done with?

Why would they bitch about the Essendon supporter who is trying to have an balanced discussion, who openly admits his admiration for both players? Seems a bit stupid don't you think?

They're bitching about Carlton supporters because maybe they wanted to see a balanced discussion and not every Carlton supporter come in and claim "Murphy is GOD, Thomas not worthy to shine his boots"

Why is this poll also irrelevant? I'm comparing two players in their rookie seasons, the only thing that is not comparible is the fact that they play in different posistions.

I think Murphy, while a very promising prospect, is massively overrated. Picking up possessions in Carlton's midfield isn't a difficult task. Comparing him to Buckley is laughable.

As an example of how Murphy is overrated, consider the Round 1 NAB Rising Star nomination.

Murphy 17 possessions, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 1 goal 1 behind.

Thomas 16 possessions, 8 marks, 3 tackles, 2 goals, mark of the year candidate.

Who got the nomination? Murphy because he was the #1 pick. I'm prepared to wait and see on the kid, he's good, but he ain't THAT good.

Yeah, please explain. Thomas looked very much apart of the game from the get-go and if I recall he kicked the first goal for Collingwood. On the other hand, Murphy was good for Carlton, but he was nowhere near as exciting as Dale Thomas. Ah well, them's the breaks. He eventually went on to win a nomination anyway... the very next round (when others weren't so sure).

Consider when evaluating Thomas and Murphy, based on raw statistics, that Carlton were in a position with a very young list, with a poor midfield, whereby they gave Murphy a role and game-time equal to that of a third or fourth year player. Collingwood on the other hand eased Thomas through the season very much mindful that he was a first year player. He was rested from games, as well as being rested within games limiting him to sometime 50 or 60 minutes per game. Both are and will be terrific players. Murphy has smarts, skills and a lot of poise. Thomas has flair and smarts to add to his perhaps lesser skills, but perhaps not yet the poise. Different players, different attributes, both very good players, and for me as a Collingwood supported, I am more than happy with Thomas as our number 2 draft choice.

Its fair to say that both players will be fantastic aquisitions for their respective clubs. Carlton took Murphy because he was the best player in the draft. Collingwood took Thomas because the Maggies brains trust obviously saw something they liked. In todays football climate, its as much off field image as on field potential. In Thomas' case, he has the skills and attributes to play 200 games of footy, as well as providing the club with its "poster Boy" that each club desperately wants to have amongst its ranks. Someone that the young supporters can grow up with and identify to. At this stage though, I think Murph is the better footballer and if the Pies had first pick would have swooped on the "young general". However, hats off to the Magpie heirachy for going with the "gut feeling" that bought Thomas to their club.

I concur with most of that, but mostly I just wanted to congratulate you on being probably the only rational Carlton supporter to post in this thread... okay, apologies to blues4flag.
