Heard on news this morning that Thompson has come out and said that if coaches were allowed to talk about umpiring and umpires more openly many would say exactly what Grant Thomas said, he went on to say that he supported everything that Thomas said.

I know sometimes coaches get pressured in interviews to comment on things like this, but I thought Thompson wouldn't have gone down that road, seeing as what's being going on.

I assume there will be some kind of fine for his comments, but I feel the real thing that's going to hurt is the umpiring this weekend, that's of course if this whole head case is actually true, but I wouldn't be expecting too many easy free kicks.

I heard it on SEN this morning on my way to work and I asked myself what on earth was going on....

I can only see trouble coming of this. Bomber is usually so careful with his words. I'm rather mystified by all of this.

Coaching is like any job on this planet. Sometimes it's best to just bite your tounge even when you know that management is wrong!!

His comments serve no positive purpose at all

This crapola Chanel 9 are crapping on with
Malthouse
Laidley
Thomas
Bomber

etc. It is designed to bring umpiring to a head. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE.

The game is moving forward in so many aspects except the umpiring. I cannot remember a season where the umpiring was this bad. The coaches will keep pushing, the afl will push back, something will snap and it will go to court or worse yet there will be a strike.

Personally I don't think the umpiring has been any worse this year than any other year, I just don't like some of the new rules. If you can understand the rules, then you can generally see that the umpires are doing a pretty good job.

The main ones which cause confusion are interference, you must have eyes for the ball; holding the ball, if you dive on it you're gone, the way to avoid it is to roll over; and of coure the usual scragging, but that's been the same for ages, the only difference this year is the hitting the arm rule. I agree with the interference thing, I think it's the fairest way to judge it, but the others should be canned. Holding the ball should be measured on whether you take 2 steps, if so, you're gone

Westcat I agree in part. I have stated before on this board that it isnt actually the umpires but the rules that need addressing.

I do believe though that umpiring has been worse. But it is because of rules
Early rounds - you touch an arm in a marking contest, at all, free kick
Then a rule change halfway through the season, now it is only if it is really blatant.
BUT
dont forget, it you are a backman and a forward does it, we will let them get away with it.

Same point again. If you run backwards into a player and take your eyes off the ball, dont be a defender. If you are a forward though, you will get away with it.

Too many rules have been changed to bnefit a certain player in a certain situation rather than everyone across the ground.

I agree, the inconsistency between different players and different areas of the ground is another area which needs to be addressed.
