the only problem with carlos on saturday night was that he dropped a couple of easy marks when he was by himself and had no pressure on him. his field kicking though has improved dramatically. i no longer have my heart in my mouth when the big fellow has the ball.

He only did it once, and he fixed his mistake by diving after the ball and winning it back for his team.

Nobody is perfect.

Bet ya you wouldn't be saying that if the Hawks won on Saturday night. We know that Hawthorn had Croad, Smith, Vandenberg, Brown and one or two others missing, but you can only beat the team out on the park, and we did that.

Um no..

I was reffering to the fact this bloke reckons your backline is a force to be reckoned with. I mean really..

Why wouldn't Hawthorn consider playing Roughead in the backline? Surely they have enough strike power up there with Williams, Franklin and Boyle as the main targets. Throw in Dixon when he comes back, and Roughead all of a sudden doesn't seem to have a spot up there.

They did try him down back last year but unfortunately for them he didn't perform particularly well, and when move up forward he kicked a couple of bags. He's a natural forward who's being stifiled by the sheer amount of better forward options the hawks have at present. He might come into his own when the hawks realise that Franklin can't take a contested mark and they figure out they need a pack crashing forward but until then he's in the Koschitzke zone.

Great game by him I thought. Went on and beat one of the better forwards in the comp. His last quarter spoil, evasion and run out of defense won us the game IMO.

IIRC Voss was the only one who actually gave him some credit out of the commentary team.

I believe he'll improve this year based on the extra support.

Thornton completely and comprehensively shut down Williams. He's done it before. Not only that, he provided sensational rebound off the backline. He is out most experienced defender by an absolute mile, and is really appreciating the support from Setanta and Waite. With Walker providing power and pace off the HBF, we're starting to get together a handy defense. :)

Hate to spoil your little fantasy here, but its only the NAB cup..

Well many would rate the Bombers as potent a forward structure as there is - Lloyd, Lucas, Hird, Johns

They got SMASHED.....

All we heard last week from you blokes is how your mids would smash our mids - WRONG
how your rucks would smash our rucks - WRONG
how Buddy and Willo were gonna tear our backs a new rear - DOUBLE WRONG.

My concern for the Hawks is that the guys that are out, esp Dixon, Croad, Vandy and Smith are.....well....not as young as they once were, and are all injured. Were's your depth?

I'll tell you, your deoth signed back with us for 3 more years and tore Willo a new arse.
If only he had of kicked that goal.......priceless :thumbsu:

You ARE kidding aren't you? We did only play Hawthorn (with a few out) in a NAB cup game remember.

what instrument do you play on the Bandwagon ? This idea that carltons biggest issue is our backline is wrong and needs to be put to bed. NAB or not. The issue last year, and this year, is our poor forward line. We have fev and then.......what ...kennedy ? Our back line is killed becuase of the pressure place on it by the inability to penetrate into the forward line, the ease with which it is rebounded from the forward line and the complete lack of penetration across the half forward line.

Huh? You've got me all wrong audas. I'm not for a minute getting on any bandwagon (for one) and secondly, I'm a huge fan of Thornton and the job he's done over the years - undermanned as he has been. Our major problem as I see it is midfield pressure and really really basic turnovers. Our backline has been something I've actually backed up over many years - and over the past two or so on this site - over MANY different posts. You will see me bag Nick Stevens and the like before bagging anyone in the backline.

To say a comment like "our backline has gone from a joke to a force to be reckoned with" by The Grover is something I completely disagree with. Our backline is ok, but we did only play Hawthorn who had a few out. Our turnovers haven't improved much IMO, and hence we will still face problems against good sides - that's all I was meaning.

Yes, our forward line pressure was terrible.....

Think that Thornton is highly skilled and will be fantastic so long as he doesn't have to fill a key defence role too often.

Also think Setanta and Waite will be good key defenders. However both did seem a little more hesitant against the Hawks than the previous week. They are both highly skilled but are also confidence players. Hopefully throughout the season they will keep attacking and having faith in themselves.
