Think Thronton is a very skilled player. However at times he seems to lose his discipline. Felt last night he was wasting much energy in trying to be tough. To me tough is running hard at the ball not pushing and shoving and pulling angry faces.Really needs to decide if he wants to be a consistent leader.

Well said :thumbsu:.

That's exactly the backline's problem. Where's the leadership?? And they can be incredibly soft. We won't win many games unless this gets fixed up.

Is anyone else getting the feeling that thornton is starting to find some reasonable form?

He's been one of our best thus far, and is appears to be enjoying not being the main defender, plus getting his hands on the ball. :thumbsu:

Our backline, for the first time in years, appears to be functioning as a well oiled unit.

At 25 and the so called 'third tall' he should be dashing out of defence and delivering into the forward line. All I can see are easy kicks and squaring the play. with the exception of one match (StKilda) , he hasn't played on any high quality opponents

You see what you want to see.

Bret beat Didak last week and beat him last year.
It took Richmond 10 years to realise Joel Bowden and his cheap 20 possessions a game got them nowhere.

I can only hope it doesn't take Ratten as long.

Brett Thornton is not a positive for our team.

Slow, undersized, sloppy.
Our team?

I guess Waite, Thornton, Jamison and Bower eclipsing their highly fancied Collingwood opponents was a mirage.

So Nathan Brown isn't a quality opponent? I'd rate him better than Kosalwaysinjured. Oh, and someone named Alan Didak always kills us - guess who played on him and rendered him ineffective? He's in fantastic form and hasn't been beaten so far, as well as providing excellent rebound for us.

And you can only play who the opposition bring against you.

The only difference being is Joel Bowden often doesn't mind his man, whereas Thornton usually clamps down on his opponent. He has done this all year. He is clearly our best defender and one of our most in-form players who has done a terrific job down back.

Not a positive? Pure unsubstantiated garbage.

You two are totally ridiculous. Thornton is a player who was thrown into the deep end at the start of his career, in one of the worst Carlton teams of all time where he had no support down back. This is when our defence included spuds like Karl Norman, Mick Martyn, Luke Livingston, Ian Prendergast, Michael Mansfield, Glenn Bowyer... not to mention playing in a back 6 that was always changing and consisted of midfielders who had no defensive bones in their bodies (Ryanne Houlihan).

In his first year against Adelaide he took it up to Carey straight to his face, and didn't shirk it - then I knew we had a solid player. In his first few years he took the scalps of players like Lloyd, Neitz, Richardson, Thompson, Lucas, Rocca and Pavlich. He was always undersized in some of these contests, eventually he would be monstered by some of these players but a lot of times he defended admirably. Thornton for the past six years has been our only shining light until recently, where he had to do some massive tasks for a player that is best suited as a 3rd tall. The crap he had to put up with in those years, getting little support and being the only one to show some initiative... you wonder why he spits the dummy when someone else's opponent outmarks him when he has to cover for two forwards, whereas his team mate is too lazy to mind his opponent.

In addition, he was the only one in our defence to show some passion. When he got beaten he hated it, and that is much better than indifference. Consider his position as the lone hand in one of the worst defensive units in history, and you will understand why he can get frustrated. Despite this, he keeps at it and more often than not gets the job done. You have to remember that he's not bloody Silvagni, don't expect him to be a miracle worker. He is a solid player who happens to be our best defender, and he has shown it not only for the last six years, but this year where he seems to be in career best form.

I'm glad Thornton is still with us - and if people like TerryWallet and wdgann continue to utter bullshit like this, then it is quite clear they haven't been watching our team or the games for the past few years. Now, I don't mind if supporters rip into the players for doing bad things - but there needs to be substance behind those reasons. All I see here is just Thornton-bashing without a shred of validity to them. "Ohhh Thornton is shit because he always turns it over and can't beat his man", "He finally beat his opponent - to bad it's a nobody", "He's only a frolicking showpony the way he moves around with the ball", "Thornton is responsible for the Holocaust", "Thornton is blah blah blah" - if these sort of people bothered to actually watch games of football, they would know that none of these are true.

In fact, maybe they did, but they want to create attention to themselves by typing shit, regardless of its validity. My point is, if you're going to bash him, back it up with reasonable examples... and not stupid one offs while ignoring the entire game, or the season for that matter.

Christ almighty, some people have no idea.

wasting plenty of time trying to tell these ladies how good / how much of a vital cog Thornton is to our backline and our team structure overall... they hold the biggest grudges against him and for no good reason...

then again one is from Sydney and the other prefers to reference the Richmond coach in their username... I am thinking they both know absolutely NOTHING about football... afterall wdgann suggests that squaring and switching the play is such a bad trait... i mean switching to he fat side to open the play up to try and counter a flood is terrible for the game...

i hope that made you feel better thrawn.
why are you abusing fellow supporters for giving their opinions?
i will continue to give my opinions on players, and all things Carlton, in the appropriate threads.
This was a Thornton thread and i gave my opinion of him, just like i did in the Hadley thread and the Jamison thread.
Oh but they were ok because i praised them.

It is my opinion that Thornton is a very average AFL footballer. The frustration i have with him is twofold.
1) he is just not much chop. He is not our worst player but imo he is one of those players like Bowden that flies under the radar by doing things that look ok but gets your side nowhere. He is undersized for key forwards. He is too slow for quicker forwards or to be a rebounding defender. And he is sloppy.
2) we had the chance to swap him for 2 good draft picks from Hawthorn. That was a good trade but wasn't made because of political conditions at the time(smorgan). Disappointing.

I too like giving constructive comments be they be positive or negative. Personally I think Thonton has been very up and down over the years at Carlton. Also concur that he has been undersized against some and too slow against others.

However I think he is potnetially a player way above average. Just needs to be played as no more than a 3rd defender and also needs to work on his discipline. Too often gets drawn into stupid stuff which seems to affect his concentration.

Opinions are fine and all, but if there is no basis of credibility behind them, they amount to very little. In other words, they are made to be criticised. People who continually type this dribble based on some sort of personal vendetta deserve it.

i will continue to give my opinions on players, and all things Carlton, in the appropriate threads.

I'm not criticising your right to an opinion, I am criticising your actual opinion.

This was a Thornton thread and i gave my opinion of him, just like i did in the Hadley thread and the Jamison thread.

It's because you typed something as silly as Thronton being a negative for the team, when this is not actually the case. Opinion does not override clear cut fact - if I were to say "IMO Chris Judd is shit" I would be flamed and rightly so.

You say he is sloppy yet you provide no examples to back your so called opinion. You also compare him to Bowden and claim he does nothing for us expect pick up cheap stats, yet this is not the case. Negativity is fine providing the reasons behind it actually exist, and there is enough of it to warrant criticism in the first place..

Lies....
Thornton's been one of our best.. sure he's had one or two bad games but the others were great!

Definitely should not be getting rid of him any time soon...

Thing is, he hasn't had a bad game at all this year. This is a very good sign and may hold our defense in stead if he keeps it up. That some would see this as a bad thing, I will never understand.

Christ almighty, some people have no idea.

Every game, there are examples where Thornton is either too slow for smaller opponent or not big or strong enough for his tall opponent. As for his skills, he cannot kick on the run and often makes mistakes. The epitomy was round 19 last year against Port Adelaide when the game was in the balance he kicked across goal from the left back pocket directly to Westhoff, who did not have an opponent within 20 metres of him and who goaled from 25 metres

my point is anyone can square and switch play - there are no special skills required. WE don't need a specialist to do it and we certainly don't need a Thornton to overdo it and allow the opposition to man up and/or flood

I may live in Sydney (after growing up in Melbourne) but I am down here in Melbourne for tomorrow's game and have flights booked for other games

I am trying to point out that THornton is a liability to our side and we would win more games without him. Top 8 sides do not have players like THornton in their team and as was rightly pointed out, it took Richmond years to work out Bowden was a liability (for the record I actually rate Bowden higher than Thornton because at least he had good skills)

I am glad you were at todays game... you could see first hand what happens when Thornton goes down. I see you have already trolled this board ONCE AGAIN and tried to tell the masses that Thornton wasn't missed today... and thank god ODN shut you down!

Today Goodwin had no touches in the first and this was purely due to Thornton... Once Thornton went down we were in all sorts of strife trying to match Goodwin up. Gibbs got towelled and Carro was too unnacountable.

Additionally our "tempo" footy began to break down with the lack of leadership back there.

Living in Sydney it doesnt surprise me you can't accurately assess football and it appears when you see the game live your even worse... go back to sydney and stay there! Oh and do everyone you actually barracks for Carlton a favour and stay away from this board!

Firstly, apologies to the moderator about re-starting this thread but I feel angry we lost another tight game. I also maintain that Thornton has a great deal to answer for and was a key reason why our defence has been poor for a number of years

1. HE CANNOT TAKE BIG TASKS. MANY PEOPLE SAY HE IS THE DEFENDER THAT TAKES THE 'THIRD TALL' COULD HE HAVE TAKEN O'KEEFE TODAY? NO! MILNE AGAINST ST KILDA NO! KOSI? NO! LUCAS NO! LOVETT MURRAY NO! THEN WHAT GOOD IS HE IF HE IS TOO SLOW FOR THE SMALL FORWARDS AND TOO WEAK FOR THE BIG ONES!

2. HE CANNOT KICK AND GIVES AWAY FREE KICKS. CASE IN POINT WAS OUT LAST THRUST FORWARD AND HE JUST LOBBED THE BALL IN THE AIR

3. HE SPECIALISES IN BEING THE QUARTERBACK. I.E HE PICKS UP EASY POSSESSIONS. HE ACTUALLY HURTS US BECAUSE HIS DISPOSAL IS POOR AND HE SLOWS DOWN PLAY UNNECESSARILY WHEN WE HAVE A RUN ON

4. HE LACKS DESPARATION AND IS ONLY ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS MAN. HE NEVER COVERS FOR OTHER MEN LIKE JARRAD WAITE DOES

At season end, we should trade him. In the short term, we desprately need Setanta back there for team balance purposes and give us the flexibility to move Waite around

Believe he is his own worst enemy. Walks around looking like a kid who has lost his lollies for much of the time. Also wastes far too much energy on bumping into guys and trying to appear tough. A real pity because imo he has got alot of natural talent.
