Thornton

should we trade him to say hawthorn for boyle or trade himto another team for a pick or should we keep him?

thoughts

As I have mentioned before in another thread Thornton IMO is our best possible trade bait! We have a luxury now of promising backman so losing him won’t be a concern. Out of the players most people on BF have put forward as trade bait he is IMO realistically the only player most other clubs would be have interested in. If another person declares that Walker is tradable I’ll cut their balls off! So seriously who on earth would take players like Bentick, Houlihan, Blackwell, Jackson and even a player like Fisher who’s name has been popping up lately. - I know I wouldn't!!

I believe instead of swapping Thornton for another player I believe it would be more beneficial for Carlton to swap for an early draft pick - 2nd at best I suppose, maybe? This could be a way were we can involve 3 clubs to nab a player like Brown or Kerr.

eg. Thornton to Hawthorn for 2nd round pick, then Carlton offers their 1st & 2nd round pick for Kerr etc.... Still im still very reluctant to give up our 1st pick rumour has that there are a few good KPP in this year’s draft!

MS, we wouldn't get one bite if we put Thornton up for trade at the end of the year.

He is deficient in all areas of the modern game. FFS Brett Ebert hasn't got a sniff all year. He did nothing and Thornton did nothing. No run off him...nothing.

He's not up to it and won't , or shouldn't get a game when Bower returns next year.

Bower, Waite and Jamo are streets ahead of him as players of similar build. Hopefully Austin will be the bigger bodied defender in a year or two time. Heater,Grigg,Browne and others are our rebounders.

I'm not sure why it is so hard for some supporters to admit one of their players is not good enough. i just don't get it. it's not being disloyal, just realistic.

Terry, as much as i respect your hundreds of games of VFL/AFL footy and your excellent work in the media since your playing days ended, I must say i respect Gerard Healy's work (and opinion) a little more. And he (for one) was of the opinion that Thornton's game at the weekend was "very solid".

I honestly don't understand the criticism of guys like Thornton. He's a solid AFL backman. End of story.

Perhaps but as I would prefer to hold onto him as I think he is important for us it does not matter. That was my point sorry.
What was Hawthorn offering for him last year?

Hawthorn offered Tim Boyle.

Carlton didn't want Tim Boyle, and demanded Hawthorns 1st round pick if a trade was going to go through.

No dice.

Thronton for Dowler or Thorp - straight swap?

No to Dowler from our point of view.

Hawthorn would never trade Thorpe for Thornton.

It's interesting that despite being a reasonable backman, every time a thread starts with "trade bait".......Thorntons name is thrown in.

Did his "I want out" thing during trade week a couple of years ago damage his status in the minds of supporters?

Just seems everyone, myself included, throw his name in all too willingly when the trades are put up.

Thorton probably holds most currency in our side at trade time as to us he is replacable with Austin etc. where most of our other players r either "untouchable" or worth nothing.

a defent NO he is untouchbale by putting the price sky high so hopefully When ever his Contract is due to be extended hope Carlton give him a nice long Contract
cause he aint going anywhere :)

I am of course in Terry Wallet's camp on this one

We read posts defending Thornton on the basis that 'he is a leader in defence,' 'he is solid' 'can kick both sides' 'carrying an injury'

Can someone please point to one play:
-where Thornton dashed out of defence leaving other players in his wake (e.g Waite, Scarlet, Christou, even Grigg)
-where Thornton raked a 55m kick onto onto Fev's chest from the wing or half back
-where Thronton was switched to attack and provided another option in a regular home and away match (he has kicked 1 goal in 5 years)
-where Thornton left his man to help out a teammate

All he does it pick up easy possessions and chip the ball around. Waite, Bower, Setanta, Jammo, Carazzo are now way ahead of him

Time to trade him before it is too late

After another typical Thornton performance today, i think myself and W D Gann can rest our case that the game has past Thornton by.

Every time Thornton gains possession of the ball is either from a sideways chip or he dishes off a sideways chip. He gets slower every week with his time in possession. by the time a Thornton piece of play is underway the opposition are already pushing back on Fevola.

Thornton is too slow, too small, not mentally quick with decision making, a stumblebutt with free kicks and his skills are lacking.

To think we passed up 2 draft picks for this bloke.

shakes head.

I don't think I've ever seen Thornton run full speed, look tired or even like he is trying. He is too relaxed, not intense enough and in fact, has he ever tried to take someone on when running with the ball. No X-factor, no nothing to get excited about. Just get his 6 marks, 14 disposals or whatever most weeks so he doesn't get dropped.

Pathetic...

(Piss weak tackler too)

Spoke to a very good source before the game yesterday (and if you dont believe me let me just say STICKS and stones may break my bones.........), who left me in no doubt that T Bird would be on the trade table this year.

I hope you are right. Forget about the need for another big forward and more developed ruckman

OUT SINGLE BIGGEST PROBLEM is Thornton. Add in a Saddington and our defence is rendered useless. When we play against opposition without a number of key tall forwards and fast attackers, Waite/Jammo/Grigg/Bower can do the job but they cannot hold 6 quality attackers between them.

I actually felt a little sorry for Saddinton because not once did Thornton leave his man to help him out - all he did was badmouth him and spend the afternoon looking for cheap sideways possessions

I also felt a little sorry for him also and i am not a Saddington fan at all, but he was given a job he was incapable of performing just to allow Waite to play loose and for what because Waite doesnt use the ball too well anyway and allowed them to play at least 2 guys on Fev.

Also thought Saddington was stiff with 1 free kick for in the back and another where he was caught out of position because Waite had overran a fairly straight forward ground level ball in the middle of the ground to allow north to kick it to Hale perfectly in a 1 on 1 contest in the goal square to Hale who had the sit on Saddington.

Glad to hear that they have finally realised Thornton is a drag on the side and is finished.

But the time to trade him was 2 years ago when, for some inexplicable reason, Hawthorn wanted him.

I can guarantee that NO club will trade for Thornton now. He offers nothing.

He will be delisted or kept on the list to be used in case we get 2 or 3 injuries to backmen. Sort of similar to what Saddington did this year.
