They might not be around much longer !!!

Apparently Trevor Nisbett said on radio, that the team would only be wearing the away jumper for about four games next season, and it would then probably be replaced.

Great news if it proves to be correct.

Looks like the efforts of Mr Eagle and others is paying off. Well done

P.S. Vicki over at the official boards was the one who shared this info with everyone.
Didn't want to take credit for her news. :)

Would that be to avoid clashes with the opposition ?

Strikes me that the 'home' jumper calshes with any team in yellow or dark blue

i think its just to put the jumper where it belongs, in the trash bin.
i like the Home Jumper, and as we wear it for home games, the teams with yellow or dark blue should change jumpers;)
Still prefer our 97 Jumper better though, but with the new logo

hallelujah.

I emailed the West Coast marketing department about the jumpers. I was not satisfied with their response. The argument about the 8 years olds who liked the jumper is starting to wear a little thin. (Do 8 year olds really understand football?)

Great News!!

I think our current home jumpers should be used as the "away" guernsys and bring back the old jumpers as our home ones....

But as long as we get rid of the ochre jumper im happy

Getting rid of the Dog's Breakfast is only half the battle - the real victory will come in getting a good design established as the club's primary jumper, and in ensuring that the club does not feel the need to change it on a whim again.

I personally suspect nothing concrete will happen until 2003. By then, all clubs will be required to submit separate home and alternate jumpers to the AFL, and that is when I think we will see the Eagles set the record straight (I HOPE).

From a marketing perspective it is better to change designs every year and sell more jumpes to fans each year, only keeping the basic club colours. That's how it is done in soccer and many fans enjoy their jumper collection.
For me I like a number of Mr. Eagles designs and as long as the non clash and home colours are blue and gold then an annual change is okay.
I must admit to looking at the designs of many of the Vic teams jumpers and thinking 'boring old design' Look at Geelong, blue hoops on a white background, they look like shirts from the 19th century. If the game is going to go forward and get people overseas interested in watching it (and why not, I enjoy gridiron, ice hockey etc now) then modernisation is needed and old entrenched fuddy duddy attitudes changed. We have a great game, we should be exporting it and letting the rest of the world enjoy it too thus enhancing Australia's status in the world.

I dont mind the away jumper - I do like some of the ones someone here came up with.

The jumper will become more visually pleasing when our win to loss ratio also becomes visually pleasing.

Agreed Bluey, if we were winning more games away from home, there would be less talk about changing the design of the jumper. Still, I liked what we had, and if we can't go back to our winning jumper from the 90s, I say we go with one of our very own, that is Mr Eagle's of course. :)

Soccer jumpers also have fvckin' great sponsor's names whacked on the front. Can't say I like that idea on AFL jumpers. Basically this is what I would envisage as being the alternate jumper's role - the plaything of marketing departments, so we could create a long line of jumpers a la soccer teams. But can you honestly see Pie fans or Bombers fans warming to a new home jumper each year? They'd never wear it (excuse the pun).

That's what they are. Geelong entered in 1897.

You could market the entire sport without once looking at the jumpers. And I think we're entitled to hang onto a bit of tradition.

I like your ideas Frodes, works very well for soccer, why not football.

You wouldn't see me buying a new jumper every season or even every 2 or 3 seasons. I like the current system but I hate our current jumpers. Hopefully that will change.

I hate to see a change in the guernsey every 2 years. What happened to just keeping the jumper we won our premierships in?

This is the just AFL and their greed at work. Marketing is a wonderful buzz word, but geeze, I know you would not catch me dead in the dog's breakfast.

Wish the AFL would leave things alone....

I know this is the tip of the iceberg but Man Utd sells over 50,000 shirts a year at over $250 each.........incredible money.

I must agree to disliking the big sponsor name but I feel that way anout test cricket too now. Those huge 'orange' emblems looked aweful.

I follow Aston Villa in soccer (was on their books for a short while) and they have had some really good strips and some aweful ones. The 1957 cup final strip was claret and blue stripes with the blue stripes wider and looked great. The theme was always claret and blue though.Over time necklines changed and silky materials came in. The baggy shorts came back about a decade ago. The jumper identifies your club but is also a fashion statement and therefore needs to move with the times.

I find it weird that so many Vic's desire the old VFL back with the competition held in some kind of time warp.

First, didn't Geelong join the VFL in 1925 along with North Melbourne and others?

Anyway, I'm just curious as to the nature of Mr Eagle and co's efforts?

I never understood how presumably sane people could pass that horrible thing off as a guernsey. For my two cents I say back to the premiership strip.

Bugger marketing - I'd like to see the official sales records for the away guernsey. My guess is they haven't contributed a great deal to the club's coffers over the course of their lifetime.

Frodo - methinks you watch too much soccer :)
