Thoughts On Burgoyne?

Pick 9 + Mark Williams for Shaun Burgoyne.

We didn't lose much on the salary cap with the swap, we have a player that is all class under pressure for Mark who had his career cut short. Pick 9 is a decent pick, however it wasn't a draft that had a strong first round and dropped off IMO. Andrew Moore was Ports pick and he won't be a gun by any means.

Overall a very good trade for us, we didn't overpay. I did think we had a potential brownlow winner on our hands. The guy won't be that, but he rarely makes a mistake.

36 games at HFC and counting.

I believe he was the difference in the North Game down in tassie.

he got released to the midfield and contributed to a number of goals

Playing his role down back releases Hodge

This flexibility is invaluable

Still a good choice in my book

Whilst he hasn't set the world on fire, he has class, poise and you are always confident when the ball in his hands. Not to mention his leadership. He was also by far and away our best player in that horrible final last year.

I'll take him over a gamble in the draft anyday of the week.

Perfect summary. Like Cyril his stats are irrelevant as they don't measure the quality of his work.

Agree totally, the man holds all the tricks to win a final off his own back. This is the hawks strength, they have matchwinners in Hodge Buddy Burgoyne and little Junior Boy. I like Burgoyne predominantly in the middle however and up forward occasionally.

I don't think we can measure whether we made the right move just yet.

There is nothing to say we would've taken Moore with that pick, but there were some handy players that went before pick 34 which was our first pick.

I understand people being annoyed that he's constantly played off half-back, but he's played there because that's where he's needed with Stratts and Gilly being out.... If those 2 boys were in the team and Buddy was injured you can be sure Burger would be playing up forward, same goes for if Hodgey and Sewell were injured long term he'd be back in the guts to fill the holes! ....It'd be hard to find a more skillful and composed swingman in the AFL imo..

There have also been a few on here that have said he's not creative enough off half-back, well i think the answer to that is we have Birchall playing better than ever and definitely in AA form, Guerra doing his usual tough acts and kicking like his usual genius-self; and of course the inclusion of Suckers who not only is the best user of the ball in the AFL but can kick it 60+ metres.... Burger seems to be smart enough, and enough of a team man to play to his team mates strengths and that's what he's doing!!

I think picking up Burger was a masterstroke. On Friday night when Gibbo went down i was worried about the Blues getting on top, but knowing Burger was there made me rest easy and when i saw Hodgey cruise down for additional help relaxation kicked in ;)

I have no doubt come Finals time Burger could be the missing link that gets us over Collingwood....GO HAWKS, PREMIERS 2011!!!

Good post. Not just because I agree with your sentiments!

With Mitchell, Sewell, Shiels and Lewis having great seasons the need for a big bodied inside midfielder isn't there - this is one role Burger can play

With Savage, Smith and Rioli spending time through the middle he hasn't had to be the quick outside midfielder - another role he can play.

I think he is playing off half back at the moment to play a role and take the heat off a backline that should be our weak link. To me it is no suprise that Gibson and Birchall have had brilliant second halves to the season as Burgoyne is always floating around there.

HE IS DEFINITELY BEING PRIMED FOR SOMETHING BIG IN THE FINALS!

either he is going to explode out of the centre square - or play as a leading forward out of the goal square. Maybe he'll be our third man up at the ruck contest man. I don't know exactly what he is going to do but I know he is he one who like our team is flying under the radar and I am sure he is the one who is going to pop up somewhere in a huge match and just take it by the scruff of nec and turn it on its head

He started strong in the forward line. 7 goals over the first 2 games. It's almost as if Clarko saw that, realised how special and unexpected that could be and has kept it up his sleeve until now/finals.

Before reading the things in this thread there have been plenty of times this year where I've seen Burgers get it and then show this glimpse of unmatchable class. The kind of stuff that heavily shifts momentum, that not only results in a goal but spurs the team on to kick a further 3 goals. No doubt if he turns it on comes finals the Hawks will be a tough team to beat.

We paid the market price, but given our situation and list, it cost us more than the benefit he has delivered, IMHO.

For mine, we didn't need another aging mid-paced clearance winner.

Seriously - you need to live up to your username and provide that same class.

We can play him forward, midfield and back. And he's very capable in any of those positions. Those types of players don't exactly grow on trees.

True, I thought we'd be seeing the 25-30 possession games in the midfield, but by god he's been effective in the back half since being there. Happy to have him out there.

As stated in my OP, I think he too has the potential to really have an influence in the finals, I'm more wondering what people think of his year to date?

Where would people see his year for the club if he produces exactly the same come finals time?

We gave up a top 10 pick for an A grade midfielder who spends hardly any time in the mid field. I have to be honest I expected a bit more from him, there have been times when I wouldn't even know if he was on the ground.

He has been played out of position this year due to the structural needs of the team, He has done a good job down back filling a void for us and we havent really needed him either up forward or in the midfield for the bulk of the year, i think clarko is keeping his cards close to his chest until the finals. Expect to see him spend more time forward and in the middle come finals time.

I dont think too many opposition teams would like to see Buddy, Cyril & Silk all in our forward line at the one time.

My Thoughts are this trade was daylight Robbery.... 112 games for he HFC and counting

Yep, Burger has certainly exceeded my expectations for games played, impact on games, impact on the team, and impact on the wider club.

In my mind his recruitment is comparable to the Fish who also came across with some doubt around durability but gave such a quality service in the latter part of his career.

Already a legend of HFC and there's more to come!

An amazing trade. He got us into the 2012 GF (along with Cyril). He got us into the 2013 premiership on his own in the last. He has won countless matches with 15 minutes of brilliance across a game. Was a favorite of mine when he was at Port and is one of my all time favorite Hawks now. I hold him up there with the likes of Platten, Dermie, Dipper and the likes. He has been the single difference in so many big games. An absolute ripper.

Possibly the best value trade our club has pulled off. A gutsy move that goes to show that when you have that quality of player available to you pull the trigger. The only players selected after pick 8 who look like forging a career up to the standard of Burger's 112 matches for Hawthorn would be Fyfe and possibly Talia.

Gibson and Pick 69 (Duryea) for Pick 25 (Black) and Pick 41 (A Kennedy) is up there too.

The 2009 off season netted Burgoyne, Gibson, Stratton, Duryea and two years later we traded for Gunston. The people in charge had an absolute blinder in hindsight.

Classiest player I've seen play for us in a long time. Just always hits a target and is such a consistent player. More than that, his mentality is iron-clad. He will appear when we really need him and now bleeds brown and gold. When asked where his kids would play (between us and Port), he said without hesitation - Hawthorn.

Looking back on what we gave up to get him, we're laughing. To think people thought he would only manage another season or two on his knees, must be kicking themselves.

This is why when our supporters on BF get in a spin about paying "overs" I shut my mouth and adopt a club knows best approach, I worked this out after the Croad trade where fans including myself thought it was a crazy move.
The trades where we supposedly paid "overs" now look like we paid "unders"
Go figure..... Who new the club knew more than some of its supporters.

Even McEvoy who people have said we paid overs for looks like a good pickup. Did a good job in the GF and with Lowden leaving we only have 3 ruckmen on our list. Hale's not getting any younger so I'm happy with the combination of Ceglar and McEvoy when Hale retires. Better than Ceglar + Some Draftee/Mature Age Recruit or putting Roughead in the ruck.
