i agree. although i dont see the defender in the mold of a mitch brown, frawley, scarlett etc i see them more in the mold of a dustin fletcher. someone tall who is agile. rather than someone tall who is brutish and powerful. i dont see us needing a monster but more someone who can outplay the tall fwds. if were opting for agile forwards, what does this say about where we think the weakness will be in future defenders?

DAMMIT ! Sounds just like Gaertner

Just on him, what was his dad's name on here? Would be nice to ask him, now that the dust has settled, whether it was Rossco's treatment of the younger folk that led to his son giving it up.

To me it makes more sense to try Lee back first. He's played in defense before so it would be a smoother transition you'd think compared to Stanley who's probably never played there in his life. A lot of people think Rhys' best position is ruck, how do most ruckmen go when they play in defense? Pretty ordinary to say the least. Early games are critical too because they can set you up for the rest of the year and Stanley's growing pains are something I'm not sure we can afford.

Our first and 2nd picks for Jacksh and GWS' 2nd and third rounders. Get it done SOS... err I mean Pelican hehehe

Yeah I agree that they don't need to be huge "brutes". I was looking through the other teams lists earlier today and many teams already have someone at least 195cm in their backlines and they are often more athletic rather than huge units like Merrett (who is actually listed at 196cm), or Rutten (who is listed at just 190cm).

For example, Darren Glass is listed at 192cm, but apparently Schofield and MacKenzie (both listed at 196cm) generally take the "tall gorillas" for WC now. At Essendon you have Fletcher (198cm) Carlisle (199cm) and Hooker (196cm). At Carlton you have 196cm Lachie Henderson, at Collingwood you have N Brown (195cm) and Lachie Keefe (204cm), who apparently did so well there this year. At Geelong you have Lonergan (didn't realise he is 197cm), WB are apparently planning on playing Jordan Roughead there (200cm), GWS have Phil Davis (197cm), Gold Coast had Charlie Dixon do really well there this year (202cm), Adelaide had Talia (195cm), Port had Chaplin (195cm) and Brisbane have Merrett (196cm), as I said, etc. So most teams have at least one who is 195cm+ back there already and more will probably be planning to have someone taller back there pretty soon, to combat the taller forward lines that they are likely to be facing.

I'm not sure ours is a specific plan, but that we probably just saw the likes of Lee and White as the best available key forward options and took them for that reason, not necessarily because they were more agile, or athletic than someone else. I suspect that if a Johnno Patton or Jesse Hogan had been available to us for the same price we would have snapped them up mighty pronto. I think White will end up pretty powerful though, so he will give us some muscle and strength there, hopefully, and then there is also Beau, who is a strong unit, who many don't seem to be considering long term, but who could surprise and be good enough to keep his spot for a few years.

Lachie Keeffe is 204cm? Wow. Don't forget Ben Reid who's 195 as well. We need someone 195 and we need them quick, I don't know who any of those GWS players are that want out but if any of them are key defenders we need to get in their ear now.

Don't think any of them GWS players are KPD's. But we can try and get Aiden Corr in 2 years time :thumbsu:. There is a few 'Ruckman' who have now turned into KPD's in the AFL. If we try Stanley there or not i don't know, He could become a decent KPD but at this point i ain't all for it personally.

Damn.

Anyone know what Gold Coast's situation is? Any young home-sick key defenders?
They hardly have any. Rory Thompson is someone from them i'd like to get, Over 200cm, Was looking great until he got an injury. His from Queensland though so won't be home sick. Unless it's Matt Thompson who also asked Tom Hickey if he was homesick and thats why he came to Melbourne. :thumbsu:

maybe we can go on a bit of a shopping spree in 12-24 months time.
I quite like shopping. Dom Tyson please SOS. :thumbsu:

A lot of people think Rhys' best position is ruck, how do most ruckmen go when they play in defense? Pretty ordinary to say the least.
I think that's more your big, slow lumbering types, though, not your "athletic freaks" like Paddy Ryder (who has apparently had some success down back for Essendon) or Rhys. As long as he tries to avoid wrestling where he can, then it could work, if he plays it Dustin Fletcher-style as much as he can and stands off them, until the very end and then tries to jump over them and get a fist in.

I was watching some of our game against WC on Foxtel earlier and saw some of Cox's marks against us and on one occasion for instance he was on Simpkin and he had outreached him and we also had Dempster come in and try to help out, but he was simply too short to get a fist in as well and that is where having someone like Rhys could help so much, just being in the area and having the height, leap and reach to be able to impact a marking contest like that, when the others are simply too short.

Same with one of the marks that Tom Hickey took against us in R11. He outmarked Gwilt because he was simply much too tall for him, whereas someone like Rhys would have the height to be right up there with him.

We may not even need Rhys to be the one playing at FB. Maybe he could be the one in the pocket, like Dustin Fletcher (who rarely plays FB these days) and his instruction would be to simply stay in the area as much as possible and impact as many nearby marking contests as he can, with his speed to get to them, leap once he gets to them, and reach, to finish it off. It would be like when Mac pushes back there to help out, but in Rhys' case he would be there permanently and would likely be able to impact a lot more marking contests than Mac does when pushing back from the ruck.

Mac may have to travel 70m to get back there, Rhys might only have to travel 10-15m, which he could do in as little as 2 seconds.

Lee of course could probably very easily (probably more easily, as he's played plenty in defence before) play a similar role, as he reportedly has a huge leap as well, but he is that 3 inches or so shorter than Rhys, so may not be quite as effective at it and I think I'd rather him kicking for goal than Rhys, on what we saw (accuracy-wise) from the two of them this year.

Of those rumoured to want out of GWS, Dom Tyson is probably the one I want the most and think we need the most. I saw a few minutes of a GWS game on Foxtel last night and he got a centre clearance at one point and I think stepped around someone and then thumped the ball about 65m on his left foot, deep into the forward 50 and I thought to myself "Mmmm, yes please, we'll have some of that." :thumbsu:

lets all giv rhys a chance to play down back and see how much potencial his got if scott trys him down back maybe he sees somthing there for the team

As cool as it would be, Patton is never going to get here.

Although, if Stanley becomes a KPD, a future forwardline of Lee, White, and Patton would be.... handy.

But, again, I hope anyone isn't serious about this. We're starting to sound like Carlton re: BJ.

Agree, Would be nice to get, But what we would have to give up would be something big. Considering he is a #1 Draft Pick.

That's the thing; we have nothing that we'd be willing to lose AND that they'd be willing to take.

Our only chance would be to have him enter the draft with a price tag of about 600k or over, then do a Ball to negotiate the dirt cheap later years. But, depending on just exactly how much salary cap room we'll have next year, that could mean we can't afford to bring anyone else in. If the club has front loaded a few contracts to this year, in the absence of BJ's and (a chunk of) Gram's contracts, then we might be able to afford Patton and someone else (probably Mitch Brown).

Again, we have a better shot at the flag than getting Patton.
