Discussion Thoughts on full back

well our list has been finalised for another year. theres not alot we can do about it.

having said that, if we make finals and lose a final because we still dont have the monster KPD. then some serious questions need to be asked and pelchen will need to be held accountable. watters has been moaning about it since he joined the club.

we lost dawson and did not draft a ready made or developing KPD off the back of the 2011 season. the same thing has happened for a 2nd year.

if it costs us a game they cannot use the talent available excuse. going in with a contracted player at another club as your plan a and no plan b is inexcusable. at the end of the day we need one and we pay pelchen/recruiters to fix the holes in our list and solve these problems.

lets hope a fit fisher et al can blanket these big opposition fwds and it does not cost us anymore important games.

A little harsh surely We could have for instance drafted both Frawley and Brown and next year still lost close games by a small margin, as we were monstered by a key forward.

Whether Buddy or another key forward kick a winning goal, can hardly be laid at the feet of Pelchen as definite blame. Keep in mind we lost games even when Max was full back.

Still think between Fisher, Gwilt, Blake and Simpkin we have enough big bodies down back. Our issue last year was that 3 of them were out of action.

We do need a key back (this will be Blake's last season and Fisher is 30yo and better value in the rebounding role), but if the club wants to make do until the right option is available so be it.

Robertson would have little to do with this role (replacing Gram/Clarke/Peake/Polo and releasing Gilbert is more relevant).

I agree. If we can keep the injuries to a minimum we should be fine in the back half, it's depth that we lack.

I just hope we aren't putting all our eggs in the Mitch Brown basket again. 12 months is an eternity so there's no guarantees he's coming here.

Yep agree. Sam Fisher was out for like 5+ weeks, Gwilt also didn't come back until Round 9 i think it was. Hopefully we learn not to drop Simpkin next year as the only time we lost to games in a Row in 2012 was when we dropped Simpkin! (Vs Adelaide and North Melbourne)

Poor old Blakey got slammed when playing full back. How many times did we see him beaten 1 on 1 or a free kick paid against him because a monster had monstered him. He would stand there shaking his head and pleading with the umpire when it was clearly a free-kick. It was cringeworthy and not fair on Blake. his strength is his tank. Fish was the only player that handled the monsters. BUT no one handled a resting ruckman. Lee is the only option in my view. Kosi is too old and too cooked to play down back. Besides - his kicking for goal is his biggest asset. Drafting Roberton and TDL was a big mistake when I would have much preferred them taking a punt on a KPD of some sort. What is the worst that can happen? If he didn't work out - sack him. I am baffled. We are putting another year into Blake instead of a junior???

+1 wasnt that keen on tippett but i would have taken him ahead of roberton by a country mile.

players i would have taken before roberton:
cockie
cook
tippett
gillies (no longer available, would have pounced earlier though)
lucas cook
jack anthony (you LOL but he was good for subi as a KPD)
rodda
Garlett
Colquhoun
tipungwuti
Saad
hampson
deluca

Robertson might turn out to be very handy in the back half, time will tell, your list lost a lot of credit when you put jack anthony on there, LOL very loud like side splitting, I dont think tippet has the brain to become a key position player at afl level. We have enough young people fighting for spots around the ground, and robertson having played thirty odd games has a big start on most of the new young recruits. If you have googled family feud northam the rookie list would be the only spot for garlett, to see if he can change his ways.

Gwilt, Fisher, Blake, Simpkin - all between 188 and 191cm.

Maybe we should strap Schneids and Monty together and pretend they're one guy?

anyone who didnt see anthony play for subi would say that. but i promise you he was very very good for them as a KPD

I'm beginning to slowly warm to the idea of Stanley down back. Just watching some of the replays of our games this year on Foxtel in recent weeks, he really gained in confidence on almost a weekly basis and if we can teach him to play the Dustin Fletcher style, where he tries to avoid wrestling and instead looks to stay that step or two away and then use his height, leap and reach, to get the spoil in, he could be effective back there.

Just having him in the area would be helpful, as there were numerous times this year where we were outmarked back there with 2 or 3 jumping over the top, but just none of them being tall enough. If he is one of those two or three next year, he is going to be easily tall enough, I expect, due to his 202cm frame, long arms and big leap. Good luck taking a mark against him on the lead, too!

It would be nice to have him up forward, but, on the other hand, his kicking for goal this year was ordinary, so he didn't get anywhere near full value for his marks, whereas Tom Lee was exceptionally accurate this year, so he could play the role Rhys was playing this year (form and fitness permitting) and be likely to hit the scoreboard more often.

It would also be handy to have Rhys' thumping long 60m+ kicking out of the backline, too, not to mention having him as a marking target when kicking out from behinds and so on. The footballing education he would receive back there would also be invaluable, even if it is just for one season.

Fails on another policy point though.

Exactly - we don't want players with a massive forehead.

Going to be interesting to see what we do with all of Roo, Stanley, Lee, Wilkes and eventually White. In the short term it looks like at least one of them is going to play back, so I guess it's just deciding who. It obviously won't be Roo, and I doubt it will be Stanley either. He was really building confidence in the forward/ruckmen role and is about 15 games from becoming an absolute gun IMO, so I don't think it would be worth sacrificing that to put him back. Can't hurt to try it though I guess.

I think it's more likely we see Lee play down back in his first season here, even if it's only for a few games to let him find out how AFL forwards go about it. Could only be a good thing.

It's key defender or bust for Simpkin IMO. He needs to be able take the second tall at least because he isn't a creator like Fisher, Gwilt, Dempster etc who can all take the mediums.

I'm certainly looking forward to seeing how Simpkin goes with another full preseason (hopefully) under his belt. Last year was reportedly his first, so I expect another one could do wonders for him, especially if he manages to put on another kilo or two of *hair*

Corrected ;)

Maybe we are waiting to get the Brown brothers next trade period? (Nathan & Mitch! I would much rather Nathan!!) Both out of contract i am pretty sure. :thumbsu:

Yeah, pretty much that. I don't see him ever being big and strong enough to take the "big banana", but he needs to be able to take the next one. If someone like Stanley does end up playing down back next year it will be very interesting to see if both Tom and Jimmy G keep their spots (when everyone back there is available).

And then Frawley the next year?
