Happy to come away with 4 points in a danger game against an opponent that was meant to be fuelled with emotion. Disappointed about the fadeout but i think we just thought we had it won and took the foot off the accelerator.
Whelan was great in the 1st quarter and the game time for him and Bruce will be good as we prepare for next week.

A couple of questions:

1) What do you think of the Jamar report? Another week, another Melbourne player on report, will he go, won't he go?

2) Was there any injuries sustained by anybody? I know Bell got a hit but i missed a fair chunk of the game

3) Who will be making room for Brad Miller next week?

1) Who really cares? Jamar is pretty useless. PJ is a better option IMO.

2) Bell badly corked thigh (I think). Will miss a couple for sure. Read did his hammy again. :(

3. See above.

Gee I dunno about that mate, P.J. was useless enough himself against Hawthorn I thought. That air swing near the end was disgraceful.

As for the report, soft as butter so he'll probably get a week. :(

Miller in for Bell.

1) It was soft but the tribunal has been giving those weeks. Remember Moloney's 2 weeks.

2) Did Read do his hammy?

3) Holland

great to farewell Prinny park with a demon win.

the backline looked much better with matty whelan back, I think we've missed him a heap taking care of the small forwards and rebounding out of the backline.

Johnstone and silvia were both played well through the middle and jeff white dominated the hitouts (esp once french went down). Kouta was unstoppable there for a while in the second Q but god they have a bad team. Robbo, 6 on teague Gun.

kicking for goal was poor early. Yze whats happening? In the last 3 weeks he's kicked 2.9 but I'm sure that will turn around.
The last quarter was terrible (6.6 to 3 points) but the result was never in doubt.
should beat the tigers next week with the cam bruce show set to resume. Lets hope we can kick start a tigers losing streak and get them heading back to ninth position. :D

This is what I seem to hear most Melbourne supporters say. I have always wondered why Jolly was further down the pecking order then Jamar when he is clearly a better player, and why he didn't get more of a go over Jamar last year?

Very pleased to get the 4 points coming off a shocking loss to Hawthorn and facing Carlton in their last ever match at Optus Oval. It keeps us in the 4 and we have shown our ability to rebound from defeat and avoided consecutive losses yet again.

The first 3 quarters were sensational, we really dominated the entire field. If our kicking was better we could have been 87 points up instead of 57 points at 3/4 time. With the exception of Koutoufides, our midfielders were really good at the stoppages which is something we lacked last week. Bizzell, Brown, Wheatley and Whelan mopped up everything in the backline, and Nicholson and Ferguson were impressive. In the middle, McLean, Sylvia, Moloney and McDonald were great, winning clearances and putting on several hard tackles. Not to mention they all won a fair shair of the pill themselves. I was particularly impressed with the intensity shown by Brock and Col. Johnstone was best on ground by far, his skills and poise were a joy to watch. Green had a good first 3 quarters, Read had a solid return as did Bruce. Jeff White had a good game but was only up against De Luca really, because French went off injured. Yze and Davey both had their opportunities to hurt Carlton but their kicking was pretty ordinary. Neitz was solid, gave us a proper target up forward and kicked 3 goals. Robertson kicked a career best 6, with 4 of those in the game-breaking 3rd quarter. Holland was frustrating, dropping simple marks and missing easy goals, but at other times showed some good work. I still maintain my view that he is not in our best 22, but can be handy at times. Jamar didn't do much and might cop a soft week or two. Bell got injured early.

Disappointed with the last quarter, but hopefully we will learn from it and use it as motivation next week.

My best were:

1) Johnstone
2) Robertson
3) Bizzell
4) Sylvia
5) Read
6) Whelan
7) White

Whilst its ok we got the victory, something that has been lacking from is us really finishing off teams, which does happen to us. This shows a mental fragility when the game is over the 30 point margin, either way. That means we can let the game go when it's not close. Essentially we should have been even more focussed in that last quarter, to beat Carlton by about 80 points, as had been done in previous weeks. Our percentage is now 14% below Geelongs and close to Richmonds who are above us on the ladder. We need to develop the ruthlessness to absolutely smash teams when we have clearly been on top during the game. And maybe us supporters can be less worried about how we could be potentially lose the game even if we're 40 points up at the last change.

Having said that, the first three quarters were very good, with impressive performances from Johnstone, Green, Read, Sylvia and Bruce. As for Yze's kicking woes, needs to kick through the ball more, he hardly made the distance from 40m. Or does he have osteitis. Greens kicking was effected last year when he was struggling with it, could be the same thing.

Bottom line, good win but should have smashed them...

Overall we made ourselves look ordinary with 15.20 & a few that either failed to get the journey or went out on the full. It should've been 25 goals but ya get that I spose. The fadeout was ridiculous, but maybe it was because we had so many blokes coming back in at once.

4 points in those circumstances wasn't to be sneezed at.
