Re: Steven King.

???????

Do you think Byrnes should be in the team instead of Varcoe? Lets face facts, one of them will need to go when Chapman returns.

I was all for Byrnes being in the side after the last 2 weeks, but based on todays performance, Varcoes value to the team is MUCH more than Byrnes.

Yes.
Byrnes layed as many tackles a Varcoe, had 7 more possessions and the same amount of tackles.
IMO Byrnes is more effective than Varcoe.

Possessions mean nothing, it is a rubbish stat. Byrnes' possessions today were woeful, Varcoes pressure lead to a number of goals. Perhaps you should stop watching the stats sheet and start watching the game.

oh the Byrnes versus Varcoe debate goes on and on and on. ;)

I thought Shannon had a respectable game today as did Travis.

How about you watch the game. Byrnes had a good one. Varcoe's touches were mainly all ineffective lookaway handpasses. He also gave away some pretty crucial frees. Can't wait to see him in a few years though when he's beefed up a bit. Going to be a scrapper that's for sure.

Re: Steven King.

King played fine for a ruckmen. His form does not warrant being in ahead of Blake but he showed to me that he is cappable of playing a role in the ruck if he is needed. Glad to see him lay a few tackles and win plenty of tap outs.

Time to face facts re: S.King

There has been plenty of debate about Kingy - mostly against him. I think it's time we all need to accept the fact (Bomba has basically been stating it all season) that if he's fit he will play in the Finals - and quite probably at the expense of Blakey. I realise that this isn't going to be too popular, but the sooner we accept this, the sooner we can move on.

For the record, I'm fairly neutral on this subject, but my analysis would be:

PROS: Mature body, reasonably good mark and kick for goal, FINALS experience (something that hasn't been really brought up and definitely carries weight)

CONS: Suspect body, doesn't impose himself enough for a player of his size, ruckwork not as good in the centre as around the ground (vertical leap not that great), will he break down again at innopportune moment (as in '05 v Sydney)

Re: Time to face facts re: S.King

Ottens and King have a similar rucking style. But Ottens is 10 times better. Blakey can jump which maybe needed against more athletic ruckman.

For me its Ottens - Blake with King as backup.

I suspect that King will play finals - I personally prefer the Ottens/Blake combo. King did not try to jump in most cases yesterday and still put in a serviceable game. No obvious flaws like last year where he could not move from his rucking position without appearing to be in pain. I guess we have to face it, as has been said many times, the selection is to win the flag, not to be fair to those who have got them to the minor premiership. Same will apply to Shannon Byrnes as to Mark Blake.

Can't possibly argue with that statement, and that being the case the "only" logical thing to do is play Blake from here on in.

Better tap ruckman then King, suits our style of game better, and has had a stellar year, so why would we possibly even contemplate playing King ahead of him?
Was the better of the two last week against Richmond, and going on yesterdays game King did nothing to suggest he should be picked ahead of him.

the debate does indeed roll on...and will do so until both of them are in the vfl.

for my mind, varcoe over byrnes. byrnes plays on and then gets himself in trouble and also when involved in linking plays somehow managed to slow us down with his inability to think quickly.

I reckon Blake has had a pretty good season to date and he has bright prospects for the future.
He has obviously improved out of sight as he has matured.
But Cattery, I don't know about "a stellar year".
If it was indeed a stellar year it will be interesting to see how many Brownlow votes he gets in comparison to say Cox, McIntosh etc.

Fair point, maybe "stellar" is stretching it just a tad; very good and consistent would be closer to the mark, though the point I was trying to make is simply that he's the number two ruckman at the club right now, and by quite a stretch I'd suggest after watching Sundays game, and I'm frankly somewhat amazed that some are actually suggesting King will get the nod ahead of him come finals time.
