Re: Thoughts on todays Game (Blake posting allowed)

Every time Mumford went into the ruck Brisbane got a goal too.

FFS, enough with the Blake bashing. You'd think Blake did a Stynes and ran through the mark and cost us the game the way most of you are carrying on.

What's with Geelong supporters accepting such poor peformances?

Does the fact that we had an awesome Year in 2007 mean we should try to get even better?

Blake is painful to watch.

Who's accepting the so called "poor" performance? Most people seem to be quite critical but have also given some positive aspects of the game. Why would we not accept a win?

Forget 2007 and focus on this year.

Ottens definitely leave a huge hole when he isn't playing but did/do we expect Blakey to fully fill that hole?

I think you'll find I was highly critical of Blake after his effort against Freo last week, and rightfully so, but I didn't think he was too bad today.

True, he's not the most athletic guy running around, but he has his role to do in the side, and I think he did a pretty good job of it today. After all, Blake had 28 hitouts today, 1 more than the Brisbane side combined. What more does everyone expect from him? 20 possessions, 10 marks and 3 goals a game?

The ability to kick a Football.

You'd think that would be a requirement for an AFL Footballer.

It seems that people around here do expect that. Then they come out and say that King would be doing a better job. There is a reason why we went with Blake instead of King, and it has already paid off.

He may have that many hitouts, but watching today he seemed to like to tap to the Brisbane players or just tap anywhere without looking.

In any other year 7-0 would be considered fantastic. We started the season 4 weeks behind our normal routine :) missing our No1 ruckman and AA CHB. We are playing Hawkins,Taylor,Gamble and Mumford who have played less than 30 games between them and are still undefeated.
I think it's time some of you get a reality check and smell the roses.
The coach has consistently said he doesn't expect us to be playing our best till the second half of the year and I for one believe him!!
Our aim is to finish top 2,be at full fitness and form with our best team available in September. That's when it counts.

Couldn't agree more. Finally a voice of reason in here! :thumbsu:

How'd he get his three goals? Did he handball them through?

Blake can kick. He just needs more confidence in his ability to do so, that's all. Unfortunately for Blake, he usually looks for the handball option first, but if there aren't any players to handball to, he has no option but to kick it, but in the interim, most players are manned up so he has to kick to a contest.

* Mackie had an awesome game after a crap start.
* Our Midfield is in desperate need of Ottens.
* Gazza takes plenty of pressure off the other mids.
* Harry taylor sits comfortably in defence.
* Ryan Gamble is an awesome young talent who gives away too many undisciplaned free kicks.
* We have missed Max 'the Barbarian', throwing his body into the oppositions torsos.
* Scarlett is king of defenders.

Blake still has a long way to go, but that doesn't mean we write him off straight away.

I recall a few posters (martyk in particular) writing off Rooke as a has been. Yesterday he showed why he is a must for any finals tilt. Silky skills will only get you so far in finals. Come Rd22, we need guys like Rooke in it.

So, while Blake is not there yet... don't write him off. He will be much better when Otto returns.

I think alot of you Geelong fans are pretty harsh on Mark Blake. He isn't the best ruckman around but remember you have a number one ruckman named Brad Ottens. In reality, Blake will probably ruck for less than 30% of a game under normal circumstances. As a second ruckman, rather than a first ruckman, Blake is is decent.

I know people are saying alot of his tap today were to the opposition but I thought that was more due to the Geelong midfielders not being hard at the ball around the stoppages and more letting their opponents have the ball easy. If they had of hit the players and the ball with some form of conviction then Blake's taps wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad. Alot of teams would love Mark Blake as a second ruckman, sometime first ruckman, put it in perspective of what he is.

Blake 28 (11%)
Mumford 10 (40%)

Charman 16 (0%)
Leunberger 8 (13%)

i think a lot of people are over-reacting........

Spot on! Somehow I think the anti-Blake lobby will find some way to twist those statistics though.

I seriously thought blake had come good this season after the first few rounds, but now, his true colours are showing, and i have to say he has no idea about the game, his a DUD, a big one, and he cried about not playing in the GF, well mate, you dont deserve to, West and Mummy ahead of him anyday, atleast their not unco, harsh i know but i think a fair call

Tend to agree. With improvement over the next few months we should be able to finish top 2 and get a home final and double chance. With Ottens and Egan to return that will improve us no end. We were always going to be behind the other teams in preparation this year. Thompson and our fitness staff will have us cherry ripe come finals - there is nothing more certain.

With the hawks, I am just getting the feeling that they have peaked far too early and will have a slide in form as the year progresses. Awesome no doubt at the moment though. Loving that they are being talked up so much in the media and that we are getting very little exposure. Even Sam Mitchell said last night that he thought they were the best running team in the league. Keep talking hawks....

So what your saying is that mumford was the most effective ruckman on the ground?

So what your saying is that mumford was the most effective ruckman on the ground?

mummy seems to cover the ground well
i think he may have jumped the pecking order as west is small against most ruckmen, and might be a better option as a tall utility
mummy would be useful against bigger body rucks, whereas west could be could against mobile ruckmen

Mumford looked better than Blake yesterday.

Can the 'Blake sooked about the omission from the Grand Final' chorus shut up? Argue whether or not he deserves a place in the side, not the other crap that people make up.

The big mummy hey? Liked him alot the last two weeks, and even showed yesterday he can provide a contest up forward. Pretty sure he was recruited by Jase Davenport too, we have a good record with that kinda thing; Kelly and Egan.

Whenever Blake has the ball the instant thought is "please handball to ablett or bartel" NO MATTER WHAT! (ie: even if he can kick it).

Just have no confidence in his kicking.

LOL @ Blake apologists talking about twisting stats...How about you show the stats of how many hits went to Brisbane from Blake.

Ok, I'm stuck now, I don't think Blake is terrible, he's the perfect back up for Otto at the moment... I think long term he'll be over taken as Mummy and West are both far more aggressive and more importantly they have some courage.

I think a lot of people are very harsh on Blake though, he's not our number 1 ruckman and hasn't had an "in form" midfield roving to him of late. We're 7 and 0 and I know we're aiming to hit top gear late in the season but right now we should expect he to be perfect when those around him aren't working as hard as they could for him...
