Thoughts on The Carlton Game

For those that are having a go at Welsh - it is interesting to note that Jericho after the game said that Craig made special mention of his efforts in the debrief as he had struggled with a virus for all week and to produce that performance according to the team was great.

Our tall forwards are not the stay at home all the time like the other teams, all three rotate as to who the 'lead up' will be at different stages of the game. We can't expect the same input from each forward for each quarter as defenses will shift to counter someone who performed well in the previous quarter. We have to take our opportunities when they come and Welsh's last quarter was due to a much more open forward line being played where he could use his lead and instinct to beat his opponent.

Spot on. :thumbsu:

Actually they are taking a leaf out of the Tredders wingman of the year play making. :p

I completely agree for mine the occasional time when he doesn't chase his man is more than likely because he is exhausted from leading, moving up the ground or making space for his team mates. When ever he can he applies forward pressure akin to any of his team mates ... including Bode.

This is why..............and despite him being as frustrating as hell sometimes with his form and soft tissue injuries Welsh is worth his weight in Gold as when he plays like he did on Saturday he is a very important part in the AFC's success.

It's a pretty solid effort by Welsh to stand up after an ordinary start to the game, particularly if he was carrying the effects of a virus. It's something that's an improving part of his game - even a few years ago, if he started off slow he never really fought back in to a game. Goody even made that point a season or 2 ago in a press conference, so full credit to Welsh for changing that aspect of his game.

I understand that we rotate the roles of the forwards, and I'd rather have Welsh be more inside the 50 than Bock or Pez because he's clearly the best shot at goal of the 3 of them. When he does lead up, it's great when he leads with conviction as he did after half time (despite some cod-ordinary service and some shocking bounces), but inexcusable (virus or not) when he stops and lets his man charge past for an uncontested mark and rebound, as he did in the second term.

You would like to think so, but he’s battling so incredibly hard and he’s so important to our team! In fact, for even questioning Perrie, we might get another article in the paper regarding how much effort he puts in.
Do you seriously think Perrie is playing worse than Bock?

Perrie was rested for significant time yesterday because he was needed as a back-up ruckman with Griffin injured.

Perrie is unfairly bagged by some posters on this board, who don't give the same attention to other players.

CT I will watch the game again ......as I previously posted the thoughts on Doughty were impressions I got watching the game .....haven't seen the replay but happy to retract after viewing.

Looking forward to your revised thoughts. ;)

Actually Stevens should NOT be alowed to kick backwards like Mattner should not be allowed to dodge a player.
So true. Should become a team rule!

Absolutely correct. While we all have our positive and negatives biases towards various players, the bias against Perrie by many is ridiculously skewed.

I reckon this partly occurs because people compare 'pretty/classical/normal' looking players with the 'unfashionable/at times awkward with the occassional shank' type players thus leading to the conclusion Perrie is a hack and nowhere near as good as Bock and McGregor amongst others.

What people should actually be judging is their actual effectiveness and performance output (no matter if it looks pretty). By this measurement i would certainly rate Perrie higher than Bock this season, and i strongly believe that he remains a better option than McGregor (in the role of a mobile tall forward rotating between lead-up and deep)...though that also exposes my (considered) bias;)

I agree...for whatever reason Stevens has made 1 obvious clanger in each of the past 4 matches all related to kicking into the corridor from the boundary.

I dont know whether it's a 'vision/decision making' issue whereby he doesn't realise how close the opposition is, or whether it's a skill issue (to me it seems his kicking in these scenarios is a little slow and tends to be a little high rather than a flatter, harder kick that even if it fell short would at this bounce on quickly to the target). To me it's a little of both, but primarily the second issue when he has the ball, turns 90 degrees, and kicks from a stationary position with no momentum thus kicking it slow and high to players who some of the time are in high-risk positions even with a decent kick...

BUT...

I believe this glaring (now it has been repeated) skill deficiency, and to a lesser degree, decision making error, is specific to the kicking inboard scenario. IMO his field kicking and decision making is generally highly skilled, often finding a target, and his goalkicking also reflects his composure and high foot-skill level.

Soooo, those who are claiming Stevens is poorly skilled, i strongly disagree with you. In fact, i will go out on a controversial limb here and say that compared to Bock, Perrie, McGregor, Hudson, Griffen, and maybe even Bassett and Rutten, Stevens has the consistently best foot skills IF he adheres to the new team rule!

Some pics I took with my crappy phone camera during the game. :D

Not bad McLeodMagic - mostly because you managed to get both Gets and Macca no1 in them :D

Here's a question for you (just noticing our away guernsey in the photo's and remembering I had a question on game day): Why did we wear our away strip against carlton? It's not like our normal guernsey clashed with theirs??? We don't seem to wear it every time we play away so anyone got the heads up on that? (Not bad pics from a phone either by the way! :thumbsu: )

I actually prefer our away strip to our home strip. IMO our home strip has too many loops in it.
