Thoughts On The Richmond Game

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

There's already been a lot of comments similar to what I thought of the game, so if things sound repetitive, sorry.

Firstly four points from a very ugly game of footy is a relief, and I can see some merit in NC's comment after the game it was a satisfying win. To grind out a result when their not playing their best under extreme duress does give some satisfaction, even though it also means there's plenty of room for improvement.

On that matter, I was impressed with the effort and pressure of Richmond's grossly undermanned side after things looked like blowing out in the first quarter - sure they had nothing to lose, but they could have packed it in and got slammed like they did against Geelong. They fought really hard and had a good turn of speed, giving Richmond supporters a sniff that their losing streak may end soon if this level of committment is maintained - a little luck would help too. Full marks to Matty Richardson for having the better of Truck until his sickening eye injury - we may give him a thorough bagging at times, but nobody deserves an injury like that (well, maybe Geoff Farmer ;)) and I wish the big guy a speedy recovery.

Our forward line looked terrible in the second quarter, again really lacking structure, and our onballers got beaten for effort & speed in Richmond's seven goal streak - all up it was briefly a bad flashback to the Essendon game. Our third quarter inaccuracy was really disappointing too, the turnaround in our on ball dominance not being reflected on the scoreboard & giving Richmond a sniff going into the final quarter. Those bad turnovers which really changed the momentum of the game didn't help either, and the short chipping possession game looks as ugly as ever.

The lack of a crumber is still glaring - it was interesting to hear NC's comments after the game that the only genuine forward crumber we have at the moment is Bode, and that a couple of players are in the process of being 'educated' in the role and Jericho won't ever be that type of player. I suspect Vince is a bit of a 'project player' at the moment - he's being thrown in the deep end while we have injuries and very limited options, while they realise he still needs a lot of work to become the type of player they think he could be. His move into the backlines in the second half seemed to be an attempt to improve his speed/alertness in traffic as part of that development. Whoever they finally settle on it looks like they're fully aware of this defficiency, and will work on it with whatever options we've got available that's fit.

Huddo/Griffin took full advantage of the ruck contests, and I actually thought Griffin was actually the better of the two in the second half in the centre square - it's hard not to get over excited about this kid, he looks fantastic as a forward & his ruck work is improving leaps & bounds every game. Goodwin, Edwards, Knights & VB all had their patches where they took advantage of this dominance, while Thommo, Shirley & Doughty were very solid. Sure, Welsh had his lazy moments again in the first half but his five goals and relentless forward pressure was the game winner for us - in the end it was the difference and I thought he was our best player.

Does anyone know what happened to Bock towards the end of the last quarter at the southern end? - we were watching the movement of ball and then suddenly saw him on the ground near the behind post, struggling to get up. Eventually he went straight off the ground under his own steam, but looked to be in a fair amount of discomfort for a minute or so from whatever happened - it was right in front of us, but we both somehow missed it. I was guessing he landed heavily or ran/backed into the behind post during the contest - anyone?

Finally I just have to mention the shocking traffic situation trying to get to the ground - it took half an hour to travel the distance down Trimmer Pde, something that usually takes 5 mins, and that looked to be for no reason other than traffic light timings still geared to Tapley Hill Rd for Friday night peak hour. Maybe it was purely the volume of traffic for a 7:10 start, but we still weren't happy about getting there after the start - I heard it was worse for some Footy Express passengers though, they missed the whole of the first quarter!

Fair enough. Unfortounately, I still remember how you and your Port buddies ( even the supposed credible ones) trolled this board after last years loss to your mob in the second showdown.
Guilty as charged your honor. :o

Also guilty of trolling this board after showdowns we have lost but that is another story. :p

Jericho was pretty pathetic; anyone who praises his game has no clue. A few thoughts on his game:

• No awareness, as I mentioned last week. He will not get anywhere and this is a major reason why.
• Soft attack on the ball. At least 3 occasions he went into contests half heartedly and his opponent came away with the ball. He doesn’t like taking any hits, he doesn’t like being tackled, and he refuses to get in and under.
• One handed attempts at marking. Seriously, it might not have cost him tonight but it will, you can be sure of that.

He needs to be dropped, and then delisted.

jericho has alot to work on, but i seen something the exact oppisite of what we were critical of.

he remained composed, instead of dwelling on his negitives(for lackof better term) he just kept concentrating.

No more anxious nervous fumbly approaches that got more nd more so each play that didnt work out, instead he kept plying on.

I made a sarcastic post about him because looking at him running around the body language is of a completly different player.

Craig see's something and is patient, we cant expect miracles just improvement and the ability to learn.

it needs to be said, you do it in jest, we mostly except that.

on your board that is not the case with roles reversed.

Welcome to our (2006) world Adelaide. If a team can still win games carrying a high injury list they are a good team:thumbsu: Close tonight, against Richmond and like Melbourne last week the 0-7 tag is deceptive.

we pushed last years premier so much that the last play decided the game in the prelim despite us being drasticly on the wrong side of incompetent umpires.

Our injuries this year are no different or no more severe than last year.

our club deserves credit for that, but not used as an excuse.

You guys pay your own way, i hope it works out for you because spirit alone kept the scoreboard honest.

Im a bit surprised how many people thought Nathan Bock was ordinary, i thought he actually played fairly well. He took 10 marks, kicked 2 goals and was always a target up forward. Perrie was good as well although his disposal at time wasnt the best.
I would surprised when reading the paper how much possession Bock got, as I didn't feel he was ever threatening as a forward. Kicked a couple of crucial goals, but didn't really get into the game. Thank goodness Welshy was switched on. No way was he lazy tonight!

I would surprised when reading the paper how much possession Bock got, !

Bock is on the verge of something.

He's either going to be our next power forward since Modra or he's going to go down hill.

I see things that he's doing everything right except the arrogant briallance of Carey.

Its a precipice, either he plys on even though he's dropping those arrogant marks of carey or he lets it get to him.

His second half was match defining IMO last night.

I hope the pressure from the amount of injured Forwards we have is a reason.

I seriously rae this guy, always have.

There are some that do and some that don't, no different to this board at all.

Springy is a good case. You might be having a debate on ... say Reilly where many including himself might be calling for his head. If I then post something like "he might be having a bad season but he is not that bad" Springy will then reply "what? Not that bad? How about Salopek then you biased Port prick? You lot shouldn't post on here with your biased crap ... bla-bla bla bla-bla" and then thread is hijacked for 3 pages.
It is up to the mods to decide how to moderate these boards.
Myself? Well if these boards become a back patting communal ****fest that's fine, I'll just have to find somewhere else to read "proper opinions".

And, if I may, my opinions are not in jest or any such thing, they are just my opinions. No more no less.

Firstly I respect your input, I dont always agree but it makes me think from left field.

You dont come here because of selfish reasons or hate philosphy's.

You seem to watch footy and comment on SA footy.

I rekon you've seen the same from
me except when I post towards the trouble makers.

However I asked a honest question on your board that a "authority" couldnt handle and got intimidation. That is what I based my comment on

awww didums Pafey. Poor thing. You're being persecuted when all you are trying to do is to make sure this board doesn't go overboard with all the AFC back patting. If you have to take a few hits along the way, then so be it, because you're willing to make the sacrifice. I've found a new hero, I commend you for your courage.

BTW if you want to see a pefect example of "communal back patting" go check out the Port Board, it's hilarious.

Our board got tightened up a couple of years back.
Perhaps a bit tighter than I would choose to, but at the time there was good reason for it. Just about every year we have a discussion on how we want the board to be run. Easy to search for anyone that is interested.

I am one of the ones of the opinion that the more the merrier but personally would take no prisoners if I was a mod (no I do not want to be one) when it comes to personal abuse and persistent crappy anti team posting. Plenty of people have been banned from this board as well as the Port board for that and rightfully so.

Also when it comes to posts, after a while one soon gets to know who posts genuine opinions and who doesn't.

Persecuted? :D

Simply pointing out that you whine about the Port board yet are even worse. ;)

Anyway, that's my last post on the subject.

Nothing more to add really, this says it all. :D "I'm so wonley, so wonley..........................";)

Honeestly the responses you got a few weeks aside apart cause some users were hurting.

you offer a different persperctive.

i meet all sorts of posters, I admin'd a volitile site once and was such a success major boards copied my Idea's.

i'll question you, but i will aknowlage you when ever its required because I remember all posts not just the ones I dont like.

Much like portentous.

However I have High standards to those in power because once one with power I lived by the expectations I have when in a position not in power.

Just when you see positives say, dont worry about those who think we are to blame for the summer of 1990/1991.

Because then us "quality users" will see both sides.

After all we watch Adelaide cause there our Culture and we think rule.

Just likle your culture is numro uno to you.

If we dont hear a different prospective we are kidding ourselfs

So you're making fun of their board for being too insular, yet you're pretty well chasing PAF off the board simply because he thinks our crowd are worse than others when it comes to booing umpires.
I disagree with his original statement as well, but you're out of line.
*PAF is a good poster. Just because he shows pride in his team, and we don't always agree with what he says doesn't make him a troll.
I would hate if our board became a place where opposition supporters were chased away for giving opposing views, just as much as I would hate to be posting on a board where I was chased away simply for giving my views.

I take it your one of those deluded Crows supporters that still, quite amazingly, think your average Port supporter can act or respond reasonably in anything Crows/Port related. I bet you thought, after all the crap we had to put up with after last years showdown loss - "sh*t I didn't see that coming". You will probably think the same when it happens again and again and again. You might see it differently but from where I sit it's a case of the "glutton for punishment" syndrome.

Anyway don't get your knickers in a knot. I apologised to him for my uncalled comment of before. But let's not get too carried away, PAFs persecuted comment is laughable. We wouldn't get away with one tenth of what your average Port supporter gets away with on this board. Although, the Mods of late have really tightened up in this area.

If my defending the Crows, from what I feel is an unreasonable comment posted on the ADELAIDE Board, upsets you then stiff sh*t. I couldn' give a rats.

We may have tightened up lately Springy but I have seen nothing wrong with what *PAF has posted here and in fact I am quite disappointed in your attitude.

*PAF has always been very respectful of our team and does watch our games and like Dandy Go said it is nice to hear a different opinion. He has earnt his right to post on here with the majority of his previous behaviour. It's not just YOUR adelaide board it is the rest of ours too and you are the only one complaining about *PAF, does that tell you something?

I don't want to turn this into another 10 page saga but if PAF writes something that I feel is anti-AFC and unreasonably so, then I will post accordingly. Let's be honest, he does have form so far this year.

And just for the record, I haven't been the only one who has taken offense to PAFs "perceived" bias so far this year.

EDIT: Actually Nik on reflection I find your comment "you are the only one complaining about *PAF, does that tell you something" quite confusing. Does this mean, I can only take offense to someones comment if other posters do too? It's abit flock like isn't it?

I know I said I had finished posting but ...

Persecuted statement? :D
That was almost word for word from a previous Reilly thread. :)
