Thoughts On Todays Game V Cats

Torney was our best player until that moment. I'm not sure what happened. Could someone who went to the game englighten us as to what was happening up the field? Surely there must have been a reason for that. It destroyed all momentum!

Hard to tell what was going on with coverage like that.....i mean i love burton and all but gee a stuff up in our 50 and the cameras all we can see is him for 5minutes!

im sorry totally irrelevant but i had to get that out!!

Channel 7 are rubbish, no doubt about that.

How'd everyone rate Bocky today?

Jericho has good skills and is a decent overhead mark when he’s prepared to take a hit. He did well with the ball today but he is PATHETIC without possession. While most of our forwards are no good at least they chase and harass the opposition. Once Jericho doesn’t have possession he is utterly useless as he’s not prepared to work to get it back. He runs at half speed, he doesn’t bother tackling (0 tackles today) and he doesn’t apply any pressure.

With the ball he’s alright, but he’s a joke without it. Just doesn’t work hard enough when it’s with the opposition. And that is why he will fail.

Porplyzia was brilliant and easily our most dangerous forward. His kicking for goal was ordinary at best though and he should’ve kicked a bag. Why did he decide to pass it when he was 50 out, by himself, running into goal?

Sure Scarlett got a cheap goal but I reckon Gilly beat him on points despite a lack of goals.

Definitley. Scarlett was getting very agitated and ill disciplined towards the end of the game. If the game had gone on for another 10 minutes i think he would have found himself rubbed out for next week.

While I agree with every part of your post in principle, Drummond, that part has to be an incorrect stat, as Jericho did apply one good tackle in the first quarter. No physicality for the rest of it.

As for Porplyzia, his goal-shooting was atrocious today from set shots. He got that one chance on the run and piked it. Very disappointing.

- perrie was rubbish today, should go out for welsh next week if fit, if not, swap for huddo then get griff in the forward line

- porps was solid today, kicking let hom down

- rutten probably wasn't fully fit, burton looked to injure himself yet again

- 1st quarter really cost us as with the final 15 in the 3rd quarter

WE ARE NOT OUT OF IT! 3 very winable games to finish with

I am not too disappointed with the match. Apart from the first 15 min of the 1st qtr and the last 10 min of the 3rd we matched the best team in the comp on their own deck. We were always going to lose this game, but we minimised the damage and have something to build for the last 3 games.

Positives
- Competiveness and attack on the ball was first rate after qtr time
- Backline starting to look good again. Held up well against 57-40 inside 50s.Still Geelong kicked over 100 points in those conditions, just shows what a class act they are. Stiffy was back to his running best and Bock, Stevens and Rutten looked solid.
- Porplyzia has the best footy brain in our forward line. Would actually make a better CHF then Perrie. His kicking wasn't the best, he needs to work on kicking through the ball more. His style doesn't seem suited to the wet conditions.
- Burton, looking lively and dangerous,. For gods sake I hope he isnt injured again.

Negatives
- Alot of our 2nd rung midfielders had quiet days and disposal was poor. The difference was Geelong's ability to spot up players in the corridoor with precision short kicks.
- Got smahed in the clearances again 40-24. Don't blame the Hudson decision and our rucks for this.
- Missing crucial goals. The Porplyzia missed in the 3rd qtr was the most important kick of the day. We had the cats really worried if he kicked that.
- The slow down play in the 3rd. Have no idea why we did this. The only excuse would be if we were trying to kill time into the breeze. But we were getting on top of them at that stage of the game.

On that performance I think we have what it takes to beat WB, Brisbane and Collingwood.

Porplyzia clearly isn't confident when kicking from further than about 40 metres. His height and frame wouldn't suggest that he's a naturally long kick, but he's really got to do better than THAT.

Re: We lost that game today....

I don't think we lost it. I think Geelong played only as well as they had to. The reason we went defensive had to be because Geelong kicked up the intensity a notch or two and we had nowhere to kick to. We had our chances, but I honestly think Geelong could have done so much better than they did - in fact I think they'd be disappointed they didn't get a percentage booster (particularly after how we played in first quarter).

Re: We lost that game today....

Torney was in space, had options down the ground and instead of backing his teammates he chipped it back, ultimately resulting in a turnover which changed the game. We had our chances AGAIN and as we have all year we failed to capitalize.

Torney clearly DIDN'T have options or he would have taken them. Geelong manned up and we were not prepared to kick it to a contest.

Re: "Crows Primed for Attack"- What Happened?

Does NC legitimately go into games wanting to play attacking football? Or is it just a smokescreen?

We had a chance to really take it to the Cats at times today, and yet we went back into our shell and handed them the momentum.

Would agree with most of this... bar the Rutten and Stevens looking solid. Thought Rutten was clearly beaten and always caught behind. And Stevens continues to make monumental ****-ups. He was also disappointing for mine.

How did you see that from Queensland Jenny??

There was one unmanned Crow in the middle (Knights I think) if he had released the ball straight away.

No point in defending the indefensible. That was the turning point in the game.

Craig would not have given them the message to stop attacking halfway through the 3rd qtr. That had to be a player decision. We have got to learn that it is OK to kick to a pack or a one on one contest. You've got to back your team mates to win the ball.

But how could you see that from South Australia??? ;) Torney is a smart cookie and I believe if he could have played on he would have (perhaps didn't have the confidence in Knights?). You are kidding yourself if you think THAT was the turning point of the game. The 5 goal to 1 first quarter had a fair bearing on the outcome.

NEGTIVES:
-Our forward line, AGAIN. McGregor, Bock, Gill, Perrie, S Stevens, M Stevens, Schell, Fitzgerald etc etc 7-8 years of average tall forwards - i'm over it.

-Jerichos plays ahead of Mattner, Pfeiffer, Campbell...For mine, in a season that has been very disappointing our player managment/selection policy is up there with our disasterous injury run as one of the major disappointments.

-Umpiring. Not the difference between winning or losing but there were some shocking decisions today. Interpretations, for both sides, changed from quarter to quarter. We have been crucified by some poor umpriring decisions this year. Unfortunately, we're too conservatibe to ask for a "please explain".

-We're still "mathematically"possible. Looking forward to a week of the ever so predicatble cliches from the club and especially the coach.

-The slowdown when we had momentum. Either we have no confidence in our forward line whatsoever ( which is understandable) or Craigy and Co. are obsessed with defense. I think I know the answer, see Marty Mattner.

POSITIVES:

Stiffy Johncock.

Re: "Crows Primed for Attack"- What Happened?

an attacking game plan is only effective if you have strong accurate forwards who are on the end of good delivery --> we lack both!

One of my big grievances for the day was the manhandling of Griffin in ruck at boundary throw-ins by Ottens and King.

Griffin kept making front position and he was mauled on every occasion without reward. The only thing they didn't do to him was root him (I think).

Yet you touch a forward with a finger and they get a free kick.

The umpiring was rubbish today.

Didn't notice Stevens make any glaring errors? Rutten was Ok, without being great. It was a solid game coming back from injury and will be better for the run.

Of course it did, but we had played our way back into the game.

One of the reasons we have lost games this year is a failure to be positive.

On the rare occasions we move the ball quickly and down the middle in games, we look dangerous.

The commentator said he had options one-on-one down the ground. I thought it was the turning point in the game. Yes, the start put us way behind the 8-ball, but we had gradually closed the gap and turned it into an arm wrestle and it was at that point that we showed some weakness and Geelong punished us. The Crows retreated and that was disappointing and costly.

Bloody Johnson was given two free kicks in front of goal for headbutting people. I'm all for protecting the player, but he wasn't in control of the ball on either occasion and clearly slipped into the offending player for very minimal impact both times.
