It's happened 10 times (out of 175 times a team has been goalless for 3 quarters of a game). The most recent example would have to be the most famous, with Collingwood beating Richmond in the 1927 Grand Final. Richmond also failed to score a goal for 3 quarters of the game!

For sure! While I did suggest the 1927 Grand Final win would be "the most famous" of that type of win (mostly due to the importance of the occasion), the Carlton 1909 win would have to be "the most extraordinary". Scoring 9 goals in one quarter (in such a low scoring era), yet none for the rest of the game is truly amazing! Up until that game Carlton had never scored more than 7 goals in a quarter, and they didn't better that effort until Rd. 18 1932 (11 goals).

Only one other time from the 175 times* a team has been goalless for 3 quarters of a game has a team scored that many goals in a quarter: in Rd. 3 1937 Hawthorn booted 9 in the second quarter but they were beaten comfortably by Fitzroy, 9.15.69 to 15.15.105.

* Doesn't include the 24 times a team has been goalless for the entire game.
