Please do not go there - I might tear up and it's only January.I think people underrate Dunn sometimes. His one on one contest stats were up with the best key backman in the comp. If only he was on Kennedy and Darcy on Darling in 18.![]()
I have to disagree with the prognosis. That GWS game was clearly a selection error rather than a player failure, and so should not be used as any sort of assessment of Appleby's future.I think the more accurate assessment is the totality of his performance to date. I’d say what we’ve seen so far is an acceptable stopping ability against smalls and little else. He’s currently on a modified program entering a career defining year as a 3rd year rookie so who’s to say it won’t be a further disrupted season?
I don’t expect he earns another contract based on performance and his future will be dictated by post 2020 retirements, IMO. Honestly I think he needs to pull a rabbit out to make it onto the senior given his last up performance was the worst by an individual Collingwood player in 2019.

Totally agree with every point1 - T Brown in seniors
Like they have largely done with his brother; Persevere with the kid, knowing he’ll have a quiet game or two along the way. Too much potential and too little development to be done in the VFL.
2 - W Kelly up front in the VFL
We seriously lack depth at full forward with Mihocek more a 2nd tall, Cox a ruck forward and in the twilight of his career... Reid is the only legitimate full forward on our list at present.
Gambles up front on Roughead and D Cameron haven’t/won’t work in my opinion. And like Howe, Moore is best served as an elite intercepting backman imo.
Drafted as a back... we already know Kelly can play back and we have Roughead, Moore, and Keane and Ruscoe developing there as well
Turn Kelly into a swing man. Give him several weeks at VFL full forward in the way they did Mihocek
3. Mayne gradually to the VFL
No disrespect to him. He has done a great job resurrecting his career and played some very good games on the wing along the way... but we know his offensive limitations and given the teams age profile... I’d rather we transition other younger players to that role

The importance of the year for him I agree with, but this is true for every player who is not on the "automatic selection if fit" list.
Who's to say that any player's year mightn't be disrupted by injury. That's looking for negatives. This is our team and our player, so I like to look for positives. When I do, I see a 2018 first season full of promise. I would like to see that promise fulfilled, even though the competition he faces for a role in defence is fierce. If Crisp moves more to midfield time, then a bit of an opening appears, but there are a few looking hungrily at it.
We just disagree. I've been watching his games in 2018 this last week and have liked what I saw. You have seen the same things at some time and haven't liked what you have seen. That is about it.To break it down.
It was clearly BOTH a selection error and an abysmal performance.
It may be important for all non best 22 types, but the vast majority of those aren’t 3rd year rookies who either need to be promoted or delisted.
He’s currently on a modified program due to injury so it’s realistic to discuss an interrupted season not negative.
I said it in my earlier post he showed an ability to stop. What beyond that indicates his promise? He’s cautious ball in hand. An average user of the ball (at best). Doesn’t win much of it. Needs to play small. Doesn’t offer run. Is a defender only. These are observable points to his game that anyone that’s critically evaluating it can make. He’s not someone I would target if he were on an opposition list and as you pointed out likely needs guys have a change of role or pick up an injury to get a look in. That’s before we consider that Murphy and IQ are highly likely to be ahead of him (Bianco too, IMO).
I don’t think the discussion can go any further either without you going back on your comment that my assessment of his health was negative.

Thursday. When are we back to training?
Yeah training would be friday. They probably just first head back to the club thurs -- I get confused by that AFL article when it has return dates. I would have imagined it would be friday as that's their training days.I heard it's Friday.
Are we sure? I took the day off on Thursday to go and watch training!Yeah training would be friday. They probably just first head back to the club thurs -- I get confused by that AFL article when it has return dates. I would have imagined it would be friday as that's their training days.
I was putting thurs down because I wasn't 100% sure.
Pretty sure, going by this. and also, their training sessions pre-season are usually mon-wed-friAre we sure? I took the day off on Thursday to go and watch training!
Also good to hear he came back in lot better shape then this time last year
Was in pretty good shape last preseason unless I'm mistaken. Returned to Thailand and redid the camp. His issue was getting injured in a practice match leading into the season unless I'm mistaken.
He went there two years in a row for sure - at the end of 2017 and late in 2018: https://www.afl.com.au/news/52266/how-a-trip-to-thailand-has-bear-primed-for-a-midfield-assault (Dec 2 2018)I think that was 2 Years Ago when he went to Thailand as I don't remember hearing he went back last year
