I can see the 3 talls being used for quite some time. The cats have already shown that it works, and they have a system in place that already has the opposition coaches scratching their heads.

Take a look at the replay v Port. 3rd quarter the three talls are up forward. Like most coaches, Williams dropped Brogan and JAckson Trengrove back to cover them...the cats brought the ball in quickly, and guess what...Bartel and Ablett were up front with Hawkins, Podsiadly and Mooney forming a tall defensive line 60 metres out. Bartel marked, handballed to Ablett..and see you later.

Even if the big guys had got it, they would have had to hack it out, with talls and runners well placed to bring it back in.

There is science to this move..and a lot more to it than just 3 guys up front...it could bring us another premiership. Dont be surprised to see it utilised throughout the season ( very wet days notwithstanding!)

And take a look at the "For" and "Against" on the ladder particularly after the Carlton game. And we havent even played the Tigers yet

What is everyone's thoughts on dropping Blake back to the VFL for a couple of weeks and having Hawkins playing second ruck to Ottens? Just like the idea of giving Hawkins more of a run on the ball and getting him more involved in games.

I wouldn't mess with that atm , maybe a few minutes here or there. I dont want Ottens over doing it.

2nd term was the worst we've looked in 2 years. 3 terrible set shots and gifted goals the other way haven't helped. But if this continues, look out Richmond next week, that 07 game revisited....

Absolutely butchering the ball going forward...doesn't matter what we have in the forward line.

only touched it 120 times...we usually do that in a quarter.

I thought it would be someone better than Walker to do it but it's exactly how I thought it would happen.

Dogs did it to Nathan Ablett, Carlton doing it to Tom Hawkins. Hawkins just not going to hurt the opposition and they can get away with playing a smaller opponent on him.

Rooke has been poor, really dumb late change.

Discipline, not in the cats vocabulary today.

hawkins needs to stay, pods needs to go
at 28 he cant kick, no use
Pods kicked 5 last week - so he's clearly got the ability... team had an off day in April, no need to throw the baby out with the bath water, jeezus the overreaction in here and in the washup thread is bordering on insanity

Having Hawkins, Pods, Mooney, Johnson and Rooke ALL on the same forward line was insane, even before the ball was bounced; thought I read Max said he was still struggling. If so, why was he there? Disrespecting the opposition.
When is Scarlett back?
That will pose even more selection dilemmas.
We seemed to have nobody capable of crumbing to our forwards whose marking today was poor. Wasn't Byrnes best day either.
I remember a forward line in the early 90's with Stoneham and Brownless on the flanks, Exell at FF, Breuer at CHF, and Ablett running around everywhere, and it worked. Think we had Bews/Bruns as pockets. The three talls can work against some teams, but we need some good crumbing pocket players, Stokes, Varcoe, Byrnes actually firing. Today, the balance was not there.

OP answer = no.
End thread.
No more real analysis needed.
Even though it might look far more spectacular having 3 guys taking grabs, it's far more productive having more small speedy guys keeping the ball at our end, or at least not letting it out so easily.

I love it how people make outlandish statements like this on the basis of a loss that was entirely about our midfield getting smashed and our defence failing also.

Oh and that the aforementioned third tall was the best Cats forward on the ground.

Thus, sadly your "analysis" (or rather lack of analysis, which probably explains it) = fail.

Think you'll find that i never thought it would work, and i've always been in the negative of the 2 camps on Pods all preseason and for the first 5 rounds. So it's certainly not an "outlandish statement" based on one poor performance.

As for him being our 3rd tall? Incorrect, he's our 2nd tall. Which is even more reason to not play all 3.
