Thought about starting this thread some time ago, but never got around to it.

I quite like the TBT videos the club puts up and reminisce about games of yesteryear and the players involved etc. The purpose of the thread is to discuss the game and some of the players involved etc.

The first one is from last week, the "miracle on grass" game against the Eagles:

What stood out in this small clip was Josh Drummond's precision kicking and goal kicking (x3 in this game). Such a shame we only got 94 games out of him over 9 years, because he could play and his kicking was a huge asset. Compare that to say Joel Patfull who also played for 9 years at the club, yet got 182 games out of himself.

Aside from Josh Drummond; there were so many moments in this game aside from Polkinghorne's goal, such as Niall McKeever's lunging save (would loved to have seen the goal line technology of how close it actually was) or Jed Adcock being involved in the final stages of this game as he was in the lead up to Ash McGrath's match winner in his 200th.

The video also highlighted the regular treatment Jon Brown received without little favours from the ump e.g. 1:52 of the video. It also highlighted Brown's goalkicking from that eastern end forward pocket where he nailed many goals on a right footer's wrong side.

The second video posted today is Bradd Dalziell's first goal against the Dogs:

Like many during his first year in 2008, I thought we had hit the recruiting jackpot following some of his early games. Not sure if they were 20 or 30 + possession games, but he didn't back up the following year in 09 and from memory, not sure he did much else at West Coast thereafter.

Feel free to post previous TBT videos, it is always enjoyable discussing the past and those many memories the Brisbane Lions, Fitzroy and Bears have provided.

The "miracle on grass" game was v Geelong D12, IIRC that game v the Eagles was the "pandemonium at the Gabba" game.

Great thread idea.:thumbsu:

Drummond still has the highest velocity kick I've ever seen. His ability to generate pace off his boot was incredible. Some may kick it further, some may have hit targets a bit better (although not by much) but I can't recall anyone that I've seen (admittedly less than a lot around here) kick it with greater velocity. He really did kick scorchers.

When polks kicked that torp, i was at the other end and for a brief moment was absolutely filthy that he burned a free player on a lead. Then a second later i started hugging strangers and yelling like an idiot. Was the single longest qtr i can ever remember. Went for what seemed like an eternity.

One thing I remember about Drummond's kicks was how low he tended to kick them, even when kicking long. Its something I associate a lot with players with reps as specialist kicks (Rich, Drummond, Trent Mackenzie, Suckling, Dew back in the day).

A game I am dying for them to upload is vs Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium in 2008. I have searched high and low for this game and I haven't watched it once since the game itself.

We were down by 47 points at one stage in the wet, wearing that disgusting white jumper with the claw marks, and Bradshaw put on an absolute clinic in the last.

One of my favourite memories. Berger played a magnificent game.

If you can track down the Brisbane Lions "Classics" box set (I think it was released last year; and was available at JB as well as the Lions shop) this complete game features.

Should only set you back $20-$30.

The only name for that is: "piss stain jumper"

Polkinghorne was a fairly skilled player. He had such clean hands at ground level and could really get his centre of gravity low. Would have been a tough buggy to tackle. For some reason or another he just couldn't bring the whole package together and it got to the point where he become a massive liability. I think someone like Fagan would have gotten the absolute best out of him.

Polkinghorne is a funny one. If you were to watch a highlights package of him you would expect he would be in the top 25% of league players, but he just really struggled finding consistency. It is a hard one, if James was really honest with himself, I wonder if he is satisfied with his overall league career or would he be dissatisfied knowing that he could have done more had he done more. I suspect it may have been the latter, but it is hard to know. Had he been able to pull it together, obviously, there isn't any reason why he shouldn't be still playing at the highest level.

For a long time anyone who played that mid sized half forward role would disappear for large chunks of games due to our game plan. Polkinghorne was certainly one affected by this

There was also a game in 2009 at the Gabba late in the year against Port where they were up by 40 at quarter time and we came back to win and seal a finals berth.

Also in round 2, 2005, Port lead by 38 with 12 minutes left in the match and we came back and just lost by 2.

Moral of the story, Port loved a choke.

I reckon Golby was another that would have kept improving under Fagan, he was starting to play really well under Vossy before Leppa came in.

Mark Bayes from Sydney was a kick like Josh Drummond. Some people here will be saying who?

If he was a little taller would have been a great key forward

Mate, 'pandemonium' was 2012, not the '60's. It's "Turn back Thursdays" , you're looking for the "Time Travel Tuesdays" thread.;)
Medieval Mondays is a great thread. I was at some of those jousting tournaments. I was barracking for Fitzroy of course.
