Very happy to consider any song that includes the words: "We Gotta Get Out of this Place".

The idea, you see, is to indirectly or not-so-indirectly tell the assemblage that the show is over and time has arrived for them to quit the Sports Hall on the 1st Floor, and get their arses upstairs to the Chairman's Bar where they can start buying beers for the est. four Vietnam Veterans who will be present, one being Mick Mummery, another being myself.

NEWSFLASH :::::

A certain football identity has volunteered to fly up and be a guest on our Show - to represent the other 17 clubs (one in particular) to assist us in making this a 'well-balanced' event.

I'll drop a few clues as to his identity:

  • Vietnam Veteran
  • Never played for Port Adelaide...
  • ...invariably on the losing side, especially in Grand Finals
  • Has two sons who have demonstrated far better directional judgement
  • Talks and writes football and not much else in characteristic ranting style
  • Has coached a bit; still coaching at age 100
  • Tall, angular, possessing a 'lived-in' face reminiscent of the Mekong Delta
  • You love him or you hate him
  • Personally very bloody happy to have him in jousting distance for a couple of days.
  • He'll make a great show even greater via pathological controversy!!!
  • You hate him or you love him.
Pass the word. Anyone showing up with a handful of eggs gets in free.

Good on ya, Cornesy !

You are going to make him turn LR or he's going to come back and say to the Adelaide hierarchy why arent we doing this in HK and China??. You should tell him Mumbai and India is big enough for to crows to do something with.

Lockhart Road 7 news are advertising a segment tomorrow featuring John Schumann who has called in favours with a few old mates to honour an ANZAC veteran.

Care to share? ;)
So far as I know, it's John who's doing the favour, not calling one in. He's passing up a gig in Sydney at the Bledisloe Cup on Friday 1st May to fly up to Hong Kong and present 'I Was Only 19' and then another of his songs in honour of Peter Chant at our Centenary event.
Channel 7 will be sending up a crew, led by Bruce Abernethy. The TV segment tomorrow may be about this.
Or something else.

Schuey does a helluva lot every ANZAC period. This year he'll be on the Oval on ANZAC Night singing 'I Was Only 19'.

(Seems there's been a reconciliation with the Club after some disharmony with an earlier regime; about that we should all be delighted.)

Ch 7 news had a story about John Schumann writing a song for indigenous diggers - with the aim to help them get some recognition just like his I was Only 19 helped the Vietnam Vets. He debuted it and performed it with his band - looked like the Vagabonds - at the war memorial in Canberra. The story also said he would be singing before the Port v Hawks game.

More on John Schumann's tribute to Aboriginal servicemen.

Schumann tribute to Aboriginal soldiers
THE unsung indigenous heroes who have fought for Australia over 114 years of service will finally get their recognition with a new John Schumann song the Army hopes will be as big as I Was Only 19.
Chief Of Army David Morrision commissioned the revered songwriter to compose On Every Anzac Day to pay tribute to the indigenous men and women who volunteered to fight for their country — even when they were not recognised as citizens.
Schumann tribute to Aboriginal soldiers

Midnight Oil drummer Rob Hirst and Goanna front man Shane Howard have joined in to support Schumann's Vagabond Crew.

The song not only celebrates the mateship of indigenous and white Australians in the trenches but hits out at the discrimination suffered by Aboriginal soldiers when they returned from war.
Schumann enlisted mates Rob Hirst and Shane Howard to join his Vagabond Crew band for the song which was performed for the first time at the Australian War Memorial on Saturday.

There are about 100 names on the guernsey and I counted 11 with a cross next to their names for those blokes who didnt make it home. There was about 10 power guernseies on the rack in the Port store today.

Pre-game last night I was listening to the 5AA stream. The game wasn't shown live on Australia Plus (ABC) and the global live feed hadn't clicked in.
John Schumann came on with the choir and 'I Was Only 19' through the radio feed ... and the feeling got me.

What lyrics. Every time I listen to that song I think: What lyrics. Take it from me, they are authentic.

But the feeling that really got me was something else. I knew we were going to win last night. It's that sort of song. It instills that sort of feeling.

On Thursday I'll be listening to Schuey and seeing him in the flesh, singing 'I Was Only 19' in the HKFC Sports Hall big as a hangar. So will three other of Peter Chant's 9RAR mates, all together. John, I may have mentioned, is an honorary member of the 9RAR Association.

At the end of the main show (Bruce Abernethy, Dom Cassisi and Graham Cornes) we go into a packed Chairman's Bar with its pub lounge atmosphere and Schuey sings somethings else - a song he'll dedicate to Pete at our request.
He won't have a choir backing him up, he'll have a half-dozen of the Chinese players from the curtain raiser between Team China and Pearl River Power (sponsored by China Light & Power, EnergyAustralia's parent company) joining in the chorus of 'Power To The People.'

After last night's first quarter take-no-prisoners heroics... and the Long Tan style defence we put up in the last... having Schuey up here, singing those songs of his... it'll mean a helluva lot extra. It'll be the sound of .... VICTORY.

Great pics Lockhart Road And the 9RAR choir seems to be in good spirits, hope the voices matched.

Have you sent the pics to Richo? maybe he can pass them on to the boys who cam up to Hong Kong in 2013 and 2014 and Schulzy who had to turn it down. I hope we only send retired or injured and Maggies players up there for the GF for the next decade as our boys will be at the MCG that weekend.

All the pix are with the Club, REH. They're ours, including photos taken by Isaac during the curtain-raiser between Team China and Pearl River Power in addition to Channel 7 footage.

The whole day for me was a blur of activity. It's still a blur.
But the two very special items I recall very clearly were the live auction which, with the silent auction, it has been confirmed to me, netted six figures (HK$) for charitable causes, with several winning bidders specifying that their contribution go to the Team China project, with the balance to the Ben Kende Foundation (Ben's father was in the audience with some heavy-hitters from the HKFC Rugby Section). This link will tell the story: http://www.bkf.com.hk/bens-story-2

Then there was the John Schumann special in the Chairman's Bar after the luncheon in the Sports Hall. We had John primed to sing 'Power To The People' with, yes, the 9RAR Supremes as backing on the chorus. Kochie, KT, Kevin Osborn & Co. had no idea it was coming. There has been a bit of a hiatus with the Club and this song until now, and we had an ulterior reconciliation motive for putting it on unannounced, as well as entertainment for the 100 or so who were in the bar.
John got brilliantly through the first verse, the Supremes joined in for the first chorus, and as John got to the end of the second verse, Howard Zhang and Chen Shaoliang appeared out of the crowd and joined us for the second chorus.
They knew the lyrics by heart; they'd been rehearsing for a fortnight.

The audience was blown away, Kochie in particular. He filmed the whole performance.
KT indicated subsequently that 'Power To The People' is now back as PAFC property, subject to John fulfilling his promise to renew his Club membership, and will be used as something of a Club anthem when the occasion demands.
One such occasion will be, for sure, when the Chinese lads return to Adelaide Oval.

KT talks about Hong Kong and China in his CEO Message email I received 15 minutes ago. Here is the relevant part of his message

Last week, Kochie, Deputy Chairman Kevin Osborn and a group of Senior Executives travelled to Hong Kong to attend our second annual business lunch at the magnificent Hong Kong Football Club. If you are thinking of travelling to HK, I would encourage you take a moment to check out this incredible establishment, it's amazing! But what exactly are we trying to achieve in China, other than enjoy the fine food and hospitality of the good folk over there?

Well I can tell you, don't expect to see an AFL side relocate to the Chinese mainland any time soon! Unfortunately there are precious few AFL standard grounds over there, but I've got to say the enthusiasm of the kids playing our game is infectious. As you may recall we are the sponsors of Team China, who visited us last year and came to watch us play Sydney at Adelaide Oval.

These lads just love the game, and will take every possible opportunity they can to have a kick and a catch of the footy. We are proud to be able to support their dream to just play our indigenous game.

But it's not an ambition to introduce AFL to a billion new people, and sign half of them up to a PAFC membership (as nice as that would be!), that is compelling us to continue with this strategy. Nor is it a desire to unearth the next Chad Wingard out of downtown Beijing, an equally appealing thought!

Our goal is simple. We would like to do business with China. But, as with everything we else we do, we believe that if we are to build meaningful relationships with Chinese partners they need to know who we are and what we stand for. Our philosophy is that you must give before you take, and to that end we have initiated a number of important associations to demonstrate our commitment to building these relationships.

Firstly, we have committed to sponsoring Team China for at least the next 3 years and will help to bring them back to Australia to compete in the AFL International series in 2015. We are the major sponsor of the South China AFL competition which incorporates the Hong Kong, Macau and Guanghzou region. A small area incorporating over 20 million people! We are also the major sponsor of the Guandong AFL competition, another province located in South China.

On the ground in South Australia we are also engaging with the Chinese born university student community. Our role involves helping these students, many of whom are living away from home for the first time, to feel comfortable living here in Adelaide. What better way than by whacking a Port Adelaide scarf around their neck, taking them down to the Mall for the march before unleashing our weird and wonderful local game on them!

Early days, and we might have scared a few of the students back to their homework, but generally they have been loving the experience!!
All of these things help to define the Port Adelaide way. Friendly, inclusive, fun and joined at the hip by a love for our Club and our game.

We hope that Chinese companies, interested in furthering their business interests in Australia and South Australia, will come to see Port Adelaide for what it is an elite, professional sporting organisation, competing in the highest profile sport in the land, that is committed to its community as deeply as the Port Adelaide community is committed to their Club. We would like to think that makes us pretty attractive partner material. We'll find out soon enough!

Great that all involved could share the spoils.

Haha I hope that's on tape. I reckon John England would have made an effort to meet the real Supremes at some point in his life.

Yep I can see that would have wowed them. Once again got to get to see the video of that.

KT indicated subsequently that 'Power To The People' is now back as PAFC property, subject to John fulfilling his promise to renew his Club membership, and will be used as something of a Club anthem when the occasion demands.
Good to hear it will be used for certain ocassions. I like that Macca and Rick occasionally play a few bars of it for their podcasts. I have been a big fan of the melody of the chorus since I heard it on the Footy Show when he changed it to One True Game because Port rejected it

And Australia’s sons and daughters, under wide Australian skies
Win or lose, we’re back again, to claim the winner’s prize…
which or course was originally
And Alberton's sons and daughters under South Australian skies
Win or lose, we’re back again, to claim the winner’s prize…

One such occasion will be, for sure, when the Chinese lads return to Adelaide Oval
As Long as it's not changed to Power to the People's Liberation Army and Power to the Game.;)

Fantastic stuff Lockhart Road thanks for sharing.

From the photos it looks like Lot 2 was Adelaide Oval. I guess there are people there rich enough to buy it and that would take care of the stadium deal. :D

First thing would be to evict the co-tenant. ;)

Someone back in 2007 put pictures to the words.
