I'd like our next captain to be either Marc Murphy or Bryce Gibbs. I think Gibbsy is the man.

Murph for me. I think Gibbs still has a 'laziness' that he needs to get out of him before he can be considered Captain material. A captain needs to lead by example...

what exactly has rhys o'keeffe done to attract the interest of opposition recruiters?
Not in the top 60 in his draft year and injury prone. Worth a rookie selection in 2008 but now? The lad has barely played in 2 years, so has no form to speak of.
I wish him well but suspect he'd be playing sanfl seconds if we weren't to give him a lifeline.

Between those two I'd go Murph too

But don't think Gibbs is lazy. However, he hasn't really imposed himself on games in the way Murph has, maybe it's because of his team role, but whatever it is he certainly hasn't got the same presence

It's not a popular thing around these parts calling Gibbs lazy, but I for one agree with you.
That may all change next year, but Gibbs has not as yet shown us what he is really capable of.
Let's see his endeavours on the training track this year as they'll largely mirror what we can expect next year.

Probably a good thing then that we don't seem to care about subscribing to popular opinion! :D

I realise that there is a fine line between composure and a lack of urgency, but he just seems to me to be more of the latter at times. Having said that, I thought he took a big step forward in the second half of this season once he resigned himself to the fact he was needed at half back. I'd probably like to see him stay there to be honest. I'm not a 'Release the Gibbs' crier because I think he could be much more damaging in a 'roaming HB' role like Hodge used to play.

I don't know the players and I don't know how they train or wha leadership qualities they have away from game day but I would have Gibbs and even Murphy a fair way away from the captain position.

You want you'r captain to be corageous, hard working, a good trainer, a good player, good with leadership and people roles and someone who can lift on the field when they aor their team are going poorly. I just don't think Gibbs and to a lesser extent Murphy are hard enough at it and inspiring when things are tough. I find it hard to look past Kreuzer. On field he's hard, tough, corageous, a good player and a hard worker. They way he contests and puts his head over it and contests the ball are inspiring. From what I hear he is a good trainer. I think he'd make a good captain. Russell, Jamison and even Simpson and Waite would make decent captains. Sometimes players pull their fingers out if made captain too. Shane Crawford's a good example of that and that's a valid reason for making Gibbs/Murphy captain.

Lots interesting comments on the various captaincy options. I guess the point is we're a lot healthier in that regard now than we were a few years ago. And we have another 3 years minimum before a change will happen I guess.

It's probably more important to improve the leadership group as a whole. Reckon we lacked leadership up forward for significant parts of the year, with Waite on the sidelines for whatever reason, and the other forwards being very inexperienced. Eddie's kinda taken on a leadership role with the smalls, but the other forwards haven't been settled enough to develop a cohesive group like the defense has. Hopefully the forward structure will be more settled in 2011.

:)

Call me old fashioned but I would also like a captain that will fly the flag when push comes to shove and be an imposing figure around the ground that other teams know not to f*ck with. I'm not talking about being dirty, just someone big and tough. Kreuzer in a few years maybe, if so I kind of imagine the way Matt Primus did for Port, who I rated a very good captain.

Thats the one thing I can fault with Judd's captaincy. He is such a superb player which more than makes up for it though. Keep in mind that what I call a fault is only in my opinion and I can see how that is also a positive. But how many people pick on Brisbane players when J Brown is in close proximity?

Waite is great when it comes to flying the flag, although it gets him in trouble a lot. You gotta love a guy that defends a team mate though.
Watch him at the end of this video putting J Brown on his arse after Brown is giving Murphy a bit of rough treatment. Watch around the 7:20 mark. Brown has easily 15kgs on Waite there IMO, but he doesn't back down.

Also Jammo and Rusty defending Gibbs when Podsiadly tried to break his neck.

I'm sure most of us have been in a few scraps in our lives(not always during sport). I remember the friends that are there in the thick of it with me and the others that sit by and watch.

I like the Davies rumour.

A poster/scout on another Carlton site thinks Davies will be a wrecking ball and hurt people down the track. I think Davies can play midfield and be a run with player after he ran a 15.1 beep at draft camp. Davies needs to improve his disposal, but he is a great tackler and a powerful player after he stopped Martin and Isaac Smith who tried to fend him off.

Our midfield needs players who can make a tackle stick.

The Davies thing is interesting. He could be our Josh Kennedy (Sydney version). Don't watch the Swans much but he was a man amongst boys in our final against them and Davies is a similar size.

The likes of Pav and Morabito did similar to a few of our boys in the Freo final as well so this (if it comes off) could be a minor stroke of genius by the powers that be.

The writing might be on the wall for Davies as a rebounding hybrid defender....I suspect Ratts will want elite kicks bringing the ball out of D50. Marcus also spent some time on the wing in the seniors for his TSL side, i recall one passage of play where he carried the ball from the wing, 2 running bounces and slotted a lovely goal from about 50m out \the general..... so he has some capacity to be developed as a run-with, or tall wingman

Sounds like Yarran has been spending some time across HB in training drills as well. The prospect of Yarran, Laidler, Duigan and Watson and perhaps at times Bryce using the ball out of D50 sounds a lot better

I wouldn't mind trying Armfield as a Clint Jones type tagger, he has the tank, mongrel, , agility, concentration and tackling technique...might be time to fastt track some tactical changes/improvements to take the next step?

As much as can be deduced from a handful of games I can't see him making it as a midfielder. May be just a question of adjusting to the pace of things, but doesn't seem to have the quickness of mind to play a distributor role in the middle for mine, and physicality alone is not enough to secure a gig.

Wing? Maybe. Likes to take the game on, and at VFL level this brough him undone pretty often (from the handful of games watched). If he's smart enough to temper his enthusiasm and natural aggression this could work well. A little more defensive minded grunt between the arcs is always welcome.

Don't see why he can't continue to be developed as a rebounding defender. There was a time a young guy with deficiencies in his game was given a year or two to work on them. Another year in the VFL wouldn't spell disaster for mine, as long as there were some results to go with it.

certainly is time! Carrazzo and Scotto, despite being great servants of the club will need to have their position usurped for us to get top 4 and no.17 anytime soon.

Buckley/Lucas to replace Scotland
Armfield to replace Carrazzo

I love Jamo every bit... but the sound of JR being captain after Juddy does have a sense of warmth and completeness about it...

JR for Captain
Jamo for Vice
Murph, Gibbs, Simmo, Kreuzer for leadership group post Judd

Next year
Judd for Captain
JR & Jamo for co-vice
Murph, Gibbs, Simmo and Carrots for leadership group

Collins prefers that his work be done behind the scenes. Revealing too much brilliance at once would undoubtedly result in the deaths of thousands from shock and awe. Collins is after all, a loving god

Epic fail.

Over the top? Absolutely. But I still think jammo needs to cement his spot ni the side before he gets made Captain. If the decision was being made now, I would be worried about giving it to him because there were times last season where he would have been dropped if we had options.

That said, I've got no doubt he will make every post a winner from here on in and would make a very good captain of the CFC.

Exactly the role I've been hoping to see Army play in, and I've said it a fair few times on here.

I love Army running it out of the backline but I think he'd be even better for us as a tagger.

He has all the tools necessary. I have no doubt he can make it as a tagger, and we'll be a better team if it happens.
