Media TiFmedia presents... Sweet FA Powerlifting

First cab off the rank is the S28 wooden spooners, the Baghdad Bombers. With a new skipper at the helm in Season 29, WaynesWorld19, we have seen the dynamic shift in recent times, as the powerful club continues to turn over their list and recruit more and more fresh 'talent' to their stocks. They'll be looking for a change in fortunes this season, and as is customary for the combative club, they have already courted more than their fair share of controversy early in S29.

hDEMOyA.png

With a heavy rotation policy in S28, the Bombers had a noticeable lack of representation among statistical leaders in S28, with only midfielder WFL putting up numbers worthy of All-SFA discussion. His 70.3 DT points per game putting him inside the top 40 players in the competition, and seeing him rewarded with the club best and fairest for his Season 28. Having lost their highest Mobbs votegetter, beez to the Gumbies in S29, their next best still at the club is veteran KohPhi, who tallied just 9 votes in S28.

Looking forward to S29, and second year players cadsky and Antonio BlueVein are both looking like taking their games to another level after respectable rookie seasons on field, and both appear to have secured key roles after a strong pre-season where they displayed their considerable wares for a rampant Vic Metro in their Series XV State of Origin championship winning campaign. Veteran Norma Lee Ava appears set to line up at ruck rover this season and is another one to watch, her 25 possession effort in Round 1 seeing her adjudged best afield for the Bombers.

zz7IGrB.png

Second year players Antonio BlueVein & Metalcrusher do the hard yards here quantity wise, along with the skipper of course. Having accounted for 33.52% (ABV 22.45% and MC 11.07%), or more than 1/3 of every Baghdad post in S28, the two young Bombers have picked up where they left off, combining once again early in Season 29 to lead the Bombers posting unit, with both sitting in the top handful of posters in their Round 1 clash against the Swampies to kick off the new season.

This week alone, MC contributed 10.14% of all posts in that match against the Rats, with an outrageous 217 posts, while WaynesWorld19 and a ‘quiet’ ABV combined with the former, to produce an eye watering 479 posts. WFL is another quantity poster whose numbers appear well on the up for S29 which will be welcome news at Baghdad. Coming off a surprisingly low, yet welcomed season average of 63.25 posts per week in S28, he contributed a whopping 175 posts this week.

Impact wise though, it’s hard to look past the quality of the old firm of Tony Lynn 15 and KohPhi, who as players brave (or foolhardy) enough to weather the Baghdad onslaught will know, still deliver the wheat in a truckload of chaff. Outside of that Antonio BlueVein does produce a quality at times that his sheer volume of posts may betray.

qvHFNw0.png

After poor representation in the committee room in S27, the Bombers have turned this around in recent seasons, with new skipper WaynesWorld19 having represented the club for the bulk of S28 before a brief late season hiatus, only for him to return to the fold late, assuming the captaincy for the upcoming season. In his absence, boncer34 was a strong and insightful contributor, while WW has since resumed the post for S29. A divisive character even in the committee room, WW has been a strong and consistent voice for Baghdad, and his club would be pleased to know he speaks his mind freely and fights for the club on any matters impacting them, directly or otherwise.

jGb7JWK.png

It’s hard to pick a player from Baghdad who doesn’t make their presence felt around the competition, with the club brand relying heavily on bravado and a domineering approach to any opportunity to spruike their club, welcomed or not.

If we were to pick out the kernel, it’s hard to look beyond Tony Lynn 15 and KohPhi once again. TL remains a strong media contributor around the competition, is nuanced and witty, and for the most part retains his own identity in a sea of conformity at the club. KohPhi at his best is one of the great characters of the competition, and despite being down on activity in recent seasons, both these two make a noticeable and welcomed impact on the media landscape, whether it be of their making or simply contributing. Antonio BlueVein is another to have formed an identity outside of the club in his short time in the competition and is growing into his own, while Norma Lee Ava enjoys a cult following and her shoop work, while at times on the nose, is generally of a high quality.

dTGpDmd.png

Even the most diehard Baghdad player would find it hard to argue against Tony Lynn 15 being their talisman. One of the few active remaining custodians of the HaroLad era, as skipper, TL orchestrated the moves that saw this new breed of Bombers’ brashness take hold, and to outsiders, it’s hard to imagine that anyone besides TL is pulling the creative strings and driving the culture of the club, no matter whether he currently holds the title of skipper or not. Ask anyone associated with the club, past or present, and they will speak nothing but praise for the man affectionately known as Uncle Tony. Even in this era of overt antagonism, TL has still managed to maintain broad appeal across the competition, perhaps most clearly noted by his being the only Bomber to finish in the top 20 in the beez these last 2 seasons.
Whatever happened to TheCoach16 ?

East Side Hawks
DGfXr5F.png

Next up is S28 Preliminary finalists the East Side Hawks. It's been a summer of change at the East Side outfit with a club legend and a duo of established stars wrapping up at the club, and the return of their former star and league enigma, one thing's for certain we'll see a new look Hawks in S29. They'll be licking their wounds and desperate to build on their final four finish from last season as they look to maintain their impact on the competition in Season 29.

hDEMOyA.png

The Hawks made it all the way through to a Preliminary Final in S28 and boasted a roster the envy of most last season. Leading the charge on field was former skipper Loonerty, who finished 6th in the Mobbs, leading the club with 17 votes. Stiff to miss out on the TFLUA-Tiger Medal, he would go on to earn All-SFA selection at Rover, while also finishing the season as the #1 ranked player for DT points with 84.1 ppg. He was joined by teammate, the equally impressive por_please_ya, as she split her between between inside and out in the Hawks engine room, racking up 23.1 disposals per game to finish #1 overall in the competition. She too was rewarded with an All-SFA berth, as the pair were joined by their skipper Agent93, who spent the majority of his season down back on the half back flank after shifting back there in Round 3. NaturalDisaster was another Hawk to have a huge season on field, seeing him finish 9th in the Mobbs with 14 votes. He enjoyed a dominant season in the ruck in S28, finishing 5th overall for hitouts with 10.7 per game, his combination with Loonerty and por_please_ya a major factor in the Hawks charge deep into the finals.

Moving into S29, and the Hawks have shifted the magnets looking to go one step closer in Season 29 as they seek to make their way into the decider. HOFer Biggie has moved into the ruck in one of the surprise moves made by the sklpper this season, and his 9 hitout, 28 disposal effort while also adding a goal in their loss would buoy spirits down at the Eyrie. NaturalDisaster as a result has shifted to Full Forward, with the Hawks big man looking to impose himself on opposition defences after coming off a State of Origin win as skipper of the barnstorming Vic Metro side in January. S29 club champion, Biggie-est Cup winner Loonerty retains his spot in ruck rover, and the skipper has shifted himself back into the engine room as the Hawks starting centreman this season.

zz7IGrB.png

Leading from the front in S28 was the skipper, who with 19.68% of all the Hawks match posts last season, did the heavy lifting week on week, well supported by NaturalDisaster who accounted for 15.19% himself, with the pair contributing 34.87%, over a third of all Hawk posts over the season. The Hawks will be keen to fill the void left by experienced posters Harvey Manfrenjensenden and spookism this season, with both players seeking greener pastures for Season 29, landing at the Demons and Royals respectively. They’ll be taking with them 37.56 posts per game, or 14.91% of Hawks posts in Season 28. To put those numbers into perspective, that’s 1 in every 7 posts belonging to one of them.

As expected, the two featured heavily in their season opener against the Warriors, once again finding themselves not only #1 & #2 for their club, but in the top 3 posters for the week, combining for 159 posts between the two of them in Round 1. Much like Season 28, their next cab off the rank last week was veteran and former skipper Loonerty in what most astute observers would say is probably the sweet spot of 25-30 posts, his 28 posts putting him in the top ten contributors for the week. This is arguably where the absence of spook and Harvs could start to bite the Hawks.

Quality wise, ND and Agent consistently deliver a guaranteed and complementary quality, with Loons another enjoyable, experienced poster who likes to operate in the just right zone. Beyond them, they would harbour hope that the return of prodigal son, the enigmatic BRAB, will bring a well timed lift off the field, and they'll be hoping he can recapture his S26 form. The two Drunks also look like taking steps to fill the void, with Drunken Wookie in particular a promising rookie prospect who gives them a different feel. The Hawks would also be looking for the popular por_please_ya to recapture some of her S27 presence after a quieter S28.

qvHFNw0.png

As a club the Hawks have maintained a strong presence in the committee room for several seasons, with a succession of intelligent, confident and capable skippers at the helm, and in S29 current skipper Agent93 is no different. Having been a consistent presence in the committee room since taking the Hawks seat at the table from Loonerty in S27, he is a considered, deliberate voice in a committee that can at times become passionate and chaotic. Is universally recognised as one of the strongest club captains in the competition and is held in high regard by those involved with the inner workings of the comp.

Add to this the fact that the Hawks have a particularly well credentialed LG, with multiple former skippers and players who are regularly involved with the logistics of the competition, this holds them in great stead and ensures the club make sound decisions where required, and maintain a clear, consistent voice that ensures the club stays the course.

jGb7JWK.png

The Hawks are a constant presence around the competition, contributing strongly to the media scene both as creators and purveyors of their unique and insightful perspectives on the league, as well as getting amongst the general media buzz of the comp. Often engaging in challenging, thought provoking and provocative think pieces, posters like Loonerty and BRAB have no qualms in challenging the status quo and the establishment, often for the betterment of the league.

NaturalDisaster is a much loved, at times comical figure around the competition and generally features highly in the beez counts at the end of each season, while por_please_ya 's shoop work is truly of the highest quality, albeit used more sparingly than some other league identities. The Hawks have a unique, eclectic mix of talent on their list and as a general rule, almost anything coming out of the East Side is popular and polished.

dTGpDmd.png

The best and fairest award at the club bears his name, he’s the reigning larrikin award winner for S28 awarded to the most popular proponent of banter at the Hawks as voted by the players, and he’ll be living up to his name and stature in S29 with a much vaunted move into the ruck. A Hall of Famer, a 300 gamer, a one club player, is there a single player in the competition more synonymous with the Hawks and their culture than Biggie? Arguably only Hawks games record holder larrikin comes close, but with a 312 game SFA career spent purely at the Hawks, when you think Biggie, you think East Side Hawks. Is a cult figure at the East Side club and continues to contribute strongly on and off the field for the Hawks where he remains revered.

Next up we take a closer look at the S28 Premiers, Dragons FFC. Having started Season 29 on field where they left off last season, the Dragons are riding high on field as they sit atop the Sweet FA standings heading into Round 3, while off field, they've been active in the off season, but still have a mountain of work to do to get back to their best.

hDEMOyA.png

It doesn’t get any better than a Premiership, and the Dragons enjoyed a fairytale finish to Season 28, winning the flag in new skipper AceAndy ’s first season at the helm, with the man himself claiming a Deestroy Medal for his trouble, their heart and soul player Ljp86 also starring in the famous win.

Enjoying a 6 game winning streak between rounds 8-13, the Dragons roared into a finals campaign with the double chance, and made light work of S26 premiers, the Mount Buller Demons. The key to their success being an even contribution across their list, with only rookie ruckman The Kingslayer (#5 in hitouts) placing in the top 10 of any statistical measure. He also led the club in Mobbs votes with 8, seeing him finish 26th overall. Midfielder and co-captain Hatchy1992 led the club for disposals with 19.5 per game seeing him finish 24th overall, while Ljp86 led the club in goals, finishing 11th in the comp with 37 majors, at 2.3 goals per game.

The club failed to register a single representative in the All-SFA side, perhaps controversially, however the numbers suggest they had no individual standouts, rather their success was born of an even spread of contributors each week.

Fast forward to S29, and veteran midfielder Mooresome leads the way for the Dragons statistically, with his 32.5 disposals per game placing him #2 in the competition, closely followed by S28 rookie Dr Mantis Taboggan in 3rd with 29.5 disposals per game. Fellow S28 rookie Strigoi has moved into the ruck this season, and currently sits 4th in the competition for hitouts with 13.5 per game, while veteran Knifey Spoony leads the clubs in marks, and sits #7 in the competition. The Dragons will want to see this individual improvement continue in Season 29 if they are to be the first club to go back to back since the Bombers in seasons 23&24.

zz7IGrB.png

It was a one man band in S28 at Dragon Island, with skipper AceAndy averaging 60.14 posts per game at 29.48% of the Dragons paltry 204 posts per week, meaning 1 in every 3 posts was Ace.

New recruit CazC30 dominates the posting early in Season 29 for the Dragons, averaging 124 posts per game, seeing her contribute 23.84% of all posts at her new club. Behind her is S28 rookie Strigoi, averaging 103 posts per game with 19.8% of her club’s posts, with skipper AceAndy and his 101 posts per game so far in S29 at 19.42% rounding out the big 3 at the club. That’s 63% of the Dragons total match posts each week, or 2 out of every 3 posts.

A great pick up in S29 who’s contributing to a lift in activity is S29 recruit fumbler, with his 58.5 posts per game contributing a further 11.25% of their activity. There’s a steep drop off from here however, with only a further 4 posters operating in the 15-35 post range. They can’t afford for any of their top half a dozen posters to drop off at any stage in S29, and they will be hoping for a lift from those underneath as the season goes on.

The Dragons appear to have found the increased level of activity they've been craving, but while the quantity's up, questions remain about their quality. AceAndy is able to hold his own most weeks, and fumbler will definitely help to hold interest, the question is, can the divisive CazC30 shake her reputation and turn a new leaf? and can prolific contributor Strigoi find some edge? The jury remains out on this front. Knifey Spoony is an enjoyable character who definitely provides a different feel when he's around, and guys like Hatchy1992 , Mooresome and Dr Mantis Taboggan need to shoulder more load.

qvHFNw0.png

The skipper has been the club’s rep in committee since taking the reigns last season from PhenomenalV1, who appears to have been a valued, if at times intermittent, contributor. AceAndy is a strong and regular presence in the committee room for his club, his measured approach consistently reflecting the wishes of his leadership group. He is inquisitive when necessary, confident when required to challenge, and regularly contributes to the decision making and refining of the rules and regulations.

League legend Ljp86 has also been staunchly vocal in recent seasons in times of controversy, weighing in where he has felt necessary, and with his extensive knowledge of the inner workings coupled with his experience, I have no doubt he is a strong support to Ace and his leadership group behind closed doors.

jGb7JWK.png

This is where it gets a bit grim for the Dragons. AceAndy is a regular sight outside of the clubhouse and their matches, but beyond him, there is very little in the way of Dragons presence outside of their comfort zone. They would make no apologies for this, however I think behind closed doors it would be a focus to engage the competition on a much more active and consistent basis.

Besides acknowledging milestones, the Dragons have zero media presence around the competition, and not since former skipper PhenomenalV1 have they had a strong media personality within their walls. Again, publicly they appear to be not concerned by this in the slightest, but with a long list of former stars who have been major contributors to the Sweet FA media scene, the broader SFA community understands it’s more a case of personnel than by design.

dTGpDmd.png

Where most clubs have one player as their talisman, the one that there club galvanises behind, the Dragons have two. United way back in Season 5, were club founder and inaugural skipper Pie 4 Life, and the player whose moniker accompanies their best and fairest award and their home ground, Ljp86. The two were there at the club’s inception, were the clubs first two captains, and have played over 400 games together for the club. They are 1 & 2 in almost every statistic for the club, and both have enjoyed countless accolades during their long and storied Sweet FA careers.

Both Hall of Famers, with Ljp earning Immortal status for his massive league contributions, the two have shared a locker room at Dragon Island for over 14 years now. Although their output week to week has diminished, their impact on the club and it’s culture is immeasurable. You simply cannot discuss the Dragons without mentioning these two, and they are both tremendously respected identities of the Sweet FA competition.

"The question is, can the divisive CazC30 shake her reputation and turn a new leaf?" TheInjuryFactory

Brilliant write up TIF, and thanks for the kind words.
