I didnt live through his prime but he was talked about too highly years after retirement. Only very good players get that.

As to Green making the difference in 1972, Green could have allowed someone else to blanket Walls or Nicholls who kicked 6 each with Jezza kicking 7.

The 1973 revenge one is there too which will make for more pleasureable viewing.

I know he left us to follow god, but Rancey probably edges out someone in that backline.
And Weightman, Maurice Rioli.

Hard to comment on the team if you haven't seen majority of them. Also hard to imagine assembling a team of the like that Dusty and Rance don't walk straight into

This 22 just reflects my~ sometimes sporadic ~following of the club. i.e 60s, 70s, not much from the 80s. Hence no Weightman or M Rioli. If Rance had've kept playing, he'd be in for sure.

Rex Hunt on Nichols, Balme on Walls for the first five minutes...

Not better, just from a different era. The defenders from those times were purely there to stop the forwards. He was a great of the game in his time & should be identified as such. Let’s remember that the players had to earn a living outside of football right up to the 80’s & even some into the 90’s.
This information may be of some help... In 1916 and 1919, Thorp won the equivalent of the Brownlow Medal at the time – the 'Champion of the Colony Award'. Affectionately known as 'Flippa', he was renowned for his marking ability and magnificent, long drop kicks.

Maybe Wood for Delidio, maybe.

Was Deledio a better wingman than Clay then, because I don't think he was a better wingman than Wood. Classier maybe but not as dominant as either then, IMO.

I know it doesn't matter these days when trying to pick these teams, but Deledio rarely played on a wing.

Clay was a star, one of the first very tall wing men. He was recruited as a key forward, played his early days on the wing, then ended his career as a great full back.

I think the romance of history says that Bourke Barrot Clay is the iconic centre line and I can't think of another winger since to break it up.

Greig said Wood was his toughest opponent in an era when wingmen were great players, so he must have been thereabouts.
I was a bit young to remember Clay as a winger, but as you say the reputation and the romance.

I know Deledio wasn't a wingman but I had to pick him, one of the best tigers I have seen. Unfortunately don't know very much about Clay and he could very easily push out a Weightman or a Wayne Campbell if I learned more about him

I find it almost an impossible task to pick this side including our most recent stars. I always felt that leaving out Maurice Rioli from the original TotC was a huge mistake. For mine he gets in before Rowe or Knighta.
Agree, will attempt my best ever from 1967!! 😱
Some, like Jack Dyer, will be there even though I never saw him play.

This is a little off topic but helpful for anyone trying to add more recent players to our TotC, but Mike Sheahan was asked to compile his list of the top 50 Richmond players of the last 50 years, to the end of 2016. Tipping Dusty, Rance, Jack & Cotch have all climbed a long way.

Agree both should be in but referencing Mike Sheehan’s opinion adds no weight to your argument at all. He’s marginally more knowledgeable than Robbo.
