If we are 4 -0, we are no longer last years sponners but the present years top 4 and the player's mind set changes (from we are losers to we are winners). They would go into games against St Kilda and Port with a belief that they could win and they just might!

Then again if we are 0-4 after 4 games it may be a lvery ong year.

I think we will be competitive, Realistically, I think we are on the playing list about an 8 -12 range team, but I think we might get lucky, we have an easy draw and if we gain momentum, anything could happen. My guess is..........4th at the end of the home and away! From that position the premiership's a cakewalk!!

you never know, but depth is a real concern. a couple of injuries, some poor form, and a bottom 4 finish will loom once again. lets hope for an empty medical room from here on in.

In an effort to invite more ridicule my 2005 ladder as follows:

St Kilda
West Coast
Melbourne
Richmond
Port Adelaide
Carlton
Collingwood
Fremantle
Geelong
Brisbane
Sydney
Adelaide

Further predictions

Shultz to return in round 6 and finish with 75 goals at full forward.

Richo to play a Benny Gale role in last quarters where TW wants to protect a large lead.

Tambling to kick 6 goals against Hawthorn in round 2.

Tiges to provide 1 and 2 in the rising star

Cogs to double in the Dyer/Brownlow

Chris Hyde to make All Australian

Nathan Brown to play at Coburg at some time during the year

I hope to Christ your right.

Id like Richo to go down back when there is 5 mins left in the 1/4. Benny Gale and in more recent times Big Red (Carlton) like :)

It was a good post silence ofthe Robert until you started talking about finishing top 4. Yes, we should be a more competitive side than last year and should win some more games than last year. Without key position defenders of note/quality I can't see how we'll get close to the top 4, we will have done well if we get out of the bottom 4.

We might finish bottom 4, we might finish higher, Dare to dream.

In the context of this thread, I noted that we have a very easy draw, particularly early. If we start slowly we are unlikely to threaten the eight, but if we get a flyer, anything can happen. Our 95 year was based on a good start, 7 wins straight, yet after Richo went down in round 9 with a knee we only split the remaining games 50/50 yet still managed a PF spot. And that 95 side had a truck load of weaknesses, I think John Howat was our full forward in our last final,

CHB is likely to be a problem and either Hall or Shultz will need to step up. However I think we have some solid players down back (especially if Johnson and Tivendale play similarly to last Saturday). Newman is very reliable, Kellaway will do the job on a third tall, Hartigan, Jackson and Bowden are up to it as well. If Gaspar gets back to about 80% we've got FB covered as well. The key to it though is our midfield. If they get the ball moving in the other direction, our frailties down back wont matter as much. And what we all need to understand is that Richmond is a much faster side this year which means we will get into more contests and get more numbers back or forward quickly as needed and around stoppages. Based on the side that was fielded on Saturday we have about 14 players who will rotate through midfield - namely Newman (tagging), Johnson, Tivendale, Bowden, Chaffey (tagging), Deledio, Tambling, Brown, Krakour, Coughlan, Tuck, Hyde, Campbell and Hartigan and many have genuine speed. We need luck with injuries but if they stay on the park, they will be more than competitive with most opposition midfields.

Likely side for round 1 appears to be

Newman Gaspar Kellaway
Johnson Hall Tivendale
Bowden Cogs Chaffey
Deledio Richo Tambling
Krakour Simmonds Brown
Knobel Tuck Hyde

Int: Stafford Graham Campbell Hartigan

Em Jackson Pettifer Roach.

Some weaknesses, sure, but enough midfield grunt to give us a shot.

Dude, when you've just finished with the spoon there are no easy games.

Having said that we did play very well against Brions on Saturday. This run in numbers through the centre seems to work.

Revolutionary.

Dont get hung up on the past. Melbourne seems to alternate between top 4 and bottom 4 depending on whether its an even or odd numbered year.

Fact is Richmond is one of the best performed teams over the last 3 practice matches and whether they are mickey mouse games or not the form line at present runs with the tiges. People like to put labels on teams or players - ie duds or champs and then put the blinkers on and refuse to acknowledge any evidence which challenges their view- so that the facts cant interfere with the myth.

Tiges have proved nothing in the pre season, but they have demonstrated an entirely different style of play epitomised by Monster Hyde. They tiges were so timid and unadventurous last year, it really was a chore watching them play. In the two games I have seen them play this year, they have been bold, accountable, fast and hard at it. My eyes tell me this is a different team. They still lack KPPs and may come unstuck when the real pressure is applied but to compare the team that runs out this year with last years is folly. Lets enjoy the ride be it a slow journey to the top or a sudden surge.

If it does not happen quickly but they continue to attempt to play good running footy, I wont be bagging them.

Our weakness in my opinion is our Forward Line. Geelongs defence shouldn't have great difficulty in keeping Richmond to a low score unless Richo can perform a miracle. Troy Simmonds hasn't pleased me thus far. He looks slow and his kicking boots seem to waver. I can't see then where our goals will come from if the midfield doesn't kick more. Same with Richo, Richo isn't as atheletic as he used to be and defenders are quick to gang up on him when he is trying to get 1 out and despite this he'll probably be playing more at CHF where he isn't quick enough.

I hope I'm wrong though..

Our forward line is the only real strength we have

With Richo, Simmonds & Brown you have 3 players who at some time in their career have always been the number 1 forward taking the number 1 defender
Throw in Krak, Stafford, Tambling, Deledio, Coughlan, Campbell, etc and you have a fairly potent forward setup, its just a matter of getting it to function properly and have the delivery right

Your failing to understand my point. I just don't think the setup will work. Tambling and Deledio still need a few years to develop and Troy Simmonds isn't going to kick as many goals as you think. Now that Richo is playing a different role I fail to see us kicking 100 points often.

We're going to be 1m times more competitive this year than last year (make that last the 3 years), and we're still going to lose a lot of games.

So what? We're into the first year of Wallace's 5 years.

If we finish 10th, take a couple of big scalps along the way, and beat Essendon, Collingwood and Carlton, its a big year for us!

A few years to mature into midfeild roles.

From round 1 they should be able to show abit up forward.

bump

Prediction of a 4 zip start wasn't too far of the mark, certainly a big chance to go 3-1 this Sunday.

Agree, but not the point of the post. The original thread was saying we may be a chance to go 4 zip, if we get over Freo on Sunday, we'll be 3-1, so not far off. That's what the thread is about. Next time read it.

or the worst possible scenerio is we lose these games against average competition and our season will be all over after just 1 month.

0-4

Rollin Punt !

Could have easily been the way,but LMAOOO@ your comment.

Thought I'd just resurrect this post. Still keeping a lid on it, but the scenario with the new game plan combined with an easy draw has given us a chance for a high finishing position.

Funny how Bentleigh was quite conservative on our chances at the start of the year as opposed to his present view on the main boards.

PS Remember I told ya so!

PPS keep keeping a lid on it!!

Im always quite conservative & a realist on the Richmond board.

Gotta fly the flag on the main board. And, for the record ive stated im gunning for 6th. Hardly unrealistic
